Additional Information
ACADEMIAN
To the Spirit of Tidewater Academy
Which Soars Within Each of Us
for the dreams of others.
Within the whole is our
God-given individuality,
Our inborn hunger for certain values,
And our sense of magnetism
which binds us together,
We must propagate bur own
shapeless dreams,
And be sources of inspiration
Into one full circle

STUDENT life
A croP of new, fresh angles,
A sharing of interests,
5
STUDENT LIFE
6
Learning would be in a deadlock,
If we divorced art and technology
from one another.
And if we thought only in terms of black and white,
With no subtle shades of gray . . .
STUDENT LIFE
8
We must learn to walk alone,
We must learn to run alone,
These are the goals
in the back of our minds,
Here at Tidewater Academy . . .
9
0
Education
We must build bridges to unite,
Instead of walls, to alienate.
We must join the meeting of minds,
Fulfill the hopes of the world,
Be occupied by mind and spirit,
And balance each other, to form,
and embody,
One well-grounded society.

We must carve a dream to grow,
Not of shapeless stone, but
Of eyes that have a spirit of vision.
Pulsate it with the deeds of rectitude,
Trace it with the ecstasy of heritage,
And breathe into it beauty of mind,
of eternity,
An active arcade of honor.

Students
Members of the National Honor Society
have made themselves available to those
in the school who want tutoring. This
project has been successful, in that,
students who have come for help have
improved in their studies. It is hoped
that the organization can continue this
tutoring service next year for the
betterment of the students.

function as a liaison between faculty, administration and

assemblies, promoting school activities and conducting fund
raising projects. As a member of S.G.A. the student
participates indirectly in the administration of the school and

Yearbook Captures T.A. Spirit
LEFT TO RIGHT: L. Simms, M Evans, P. Pope, C. Cobb, D.
Francis, C. Baicy, G. Zatcoff, C. Brown.
The 1972-73 Yearbook Staff worked hard in producing
a consistency of material to tie in with their theme,
"The Spirit of Tidewater.”
Throughout the year, the staff saw expressions of spirit
in various classroom and extra-curricular activities,
which they captured for use in the yearbook.
Ads were drawn up during the summer enabling more
time to be spent on more important aspects of this
book. There was a constant stream of picture-taking
and racking of brains to think up copy. All in all, the
work that has gone into this book makes this year’s
annual the best the Annual Staff has ever produced.

SEATED- Scott Chesson, Chappell, Tnsh Huggins.
STANDING: Nancy Owen, AnixTEpperson, Tom Crowder (chairman),

The Steering Committee was organized at mid-semester, with
goals to improve school conditions and create a way of solving
student problems and complaints. It started by taking a poll of
improvements the students thought would be beneficial.
Cleaning up the locker rooms and painting the boys lockers,
in addition to the ordering
of three-hundred lockers to be installed by the fall of ’73-’74,
were some of the projects completed by the committee. Made
up of two representatives from grades eight through eleven,
with a committee head being from the eleventh grade, it
encourages participants in the project to build a bigger and
better Tidewater Academy.

Spanish Club Paints Room
Composed of students interested in the Spanish language and
culture, the club’s big project was to paint the Spanish Room
in brown and orange. Complementing posters and signs,
contributed by Mrs. Jones, were added to complete the
redecorated room. The third-year Spanish class wrote articles
that were later published in a Spanish newspaper. This activity
was followed by a dinner trip to see the movie, "Poseidon
Adventure,” followed by shopping which included, of course,
sombreros.

Cross-Country Adds to SpOrts
The 1973 cross-country season provided the kind of gratification
that is the result of much work and learning. When you lose the
first three meets of a season in a newly introduced sport, it is
difficult to avoid a negative attitude. However, despite initial
losses to Portsmouth Catholic, Norfolk Academy, and Norfolk
Christian, all of the team soon realized that with honest work and
good luck they could win. As the season progressed, the team
scored impressive victories against Collegiate, Norfolk Academy,
Norfolk Christian, and St. Christophers.

This year the Warriors began their season with the four

Miss Tidewater, 1973

Tidewater Pageant was highlighted this year with the
crowning of Debbie Page as the new Miss Tidewater
Academy. After competing against twenty-two other
contestants, Debbie was crowned by the former Miss
Tidewater, Jo Ann Marks, and was presented with six red
roses. The pageantry of the evening was accented by the
presence of a castle standing majestically in the background.
The girls participating were sponsored by different
organizations and teams within the school.

Juniors and Seniors
The Junior Class welcomed the Tidewater Seniors to a world of
"Fantasia” on the evening of the prom. After a royal dinner, the
Seniors descended from the palace steps, down the Yellow Brick
Road to the dance floor, where the music of "Knights in White
Satin” beckoned them to dance. The music, furnished by Fingals
Cave, played continuously and merrily, through the evening until
the magic hour of twelve caused all princesses to return to their
pumpkins ere they were left.

Staff Thanks Contributors
Four seniors and ten juniors worked many hours after school and
Saturdays to produce the 120 pages of the 1973 Academian.
Cooperation from others, with understanding, insured its success.
The staff appreciated the assistance of the Headmaster, Mr.
Bailey, and of the faculty. Special thanks go to the teachers who
excused students for picture taking excursions and understood the
meaning and concern of a crucial deadline. Saving the day, photo
contributions from the local newspaper, The Sussex and Surry
Dispatch, filled deadline layout switches. Credit goes to
professional photographers, George Lamm, Jr. and to Dwight
Saine who often came to the rescue of the staff from a last
minute phone call to cover an event. Class pictures were provided
by Delmar Studios, Inc. and action candids were also contributed
by Frank Remoranko and Bianca M. Brown. The staff thanks Mr.
Ed Whitney, master watercolorist, for allowing the printing as
epilogue, his personal poem. Special recognition from the
Academian staff focuses on Mr. Danny DeFalco, Taylor yearbook
representative, whose assistance, advice, instructions, and
encouragement were invaluable. The greatest contributor, the
Tidewater student body, created the content for the ’73 yearbook
and made possible the'9th publication of the T.A. Academian.
RIGHT, TOP TO BOTTOM: Members
of the yearbook staff show
enthusiasm during a workshop
conducted by Mr. DeFalco,
Taylor yearbook representative.

The cursed abyss is wide and deep
The cursed abyss of years.
Could we bridge the cursed abyss?
With lonely words? With tears?
Bravely I’d face your youth and grace
And close my eyes to fears
Could we but bridge
The cursed abyss
Of years . . . and years . . . and years.
— Edgar Whitney
