You give but little when you give of your possessions.
It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.
Kahlil Gibran

God guide him in your loving care;
Let him know ... his dreams we share.
God give him strength and courage ...
for the days to come;
Let him know ... we pray for some.
God let him complete his long and lonely task;
Give him the strength ... that we ask.
A soldier is he, so proud and tall;
God send him love ... from us all.

Change is inevitable. It is all in the lord's scheme
of things. The question of whether change engulfs
and destroys us or whether we inf luence that direction
for a better tomorrow will be answered by the way
we use the freedom which He has given us.
RHS accepts the challenge for a better tomorrow,
informed and discriminate individuals are basic to
quality change.

Mrs. Cummings, Mrs, Firebaugh, Mrs. Makin, Mrs. Ruther-
ford, and Mrs. Pierce
Four of the five counselors at Ranum
are new this year.
Mr. Lindercrantz has been with Ranum
since the opening in 1962. He is in
charge of financial aid, college days
and Student Council Sponsor. Before
coming to Ranum he taught science,
and social studies and was coach for
boys sports in various schools.
Most people think of secretaries as those
people whose life ambition is to type, type,
type; but not so with Ranum's secretaries.
If one word could be used to describe them,
it would be efficient. Their sincere ami-
ability and genuine interest in helping con-
fused students have made them admired
by both the faculty and the student body.
Mrs. Rutherford, personal secretary to
Mr. Jarigese, keeps the school running
by her continous hard work. Manipula-
ting the school budget, preparing official
reports, and taking minutes for the Ad-
ministrative Council keep her busy.
The Attendance Office would never survive
without the guiding hand of Mrs. Makin.
Keeping hundreds of student attendance
records is no easy job; she handles it
with ease.
Mrs. Pierce has the difficult job of keep-
ing student records—schedules, scholar-
ship reports, and college and job appli-
cations are her responsibility.
All of our money is in the capable hands
of Mrs. Cummings.
Mrs. Firebaugh is known officially as our
General Office Clerk. In care are mail
and text inventories.
Mrs. Herick taught music at Hodgkins
Jr. High School for 6 years and at
Clear Lake for 1 year. She recieved
her B.M. from Friends University,
Wichita, Kansas and M.A. from Colo-
rado State College.
Mr. Steggal taught Psychology and
Family Living for three years in Raw-
lins, Wyoming, and social studies at
Hodgkins Jr. High School for 1 year
before coming to Ranum. He attended
College of Emporia, Emporia Kansas
and Western State College, Gunnison
Colorado.
Prior to coming to Ranum, Mrs. Beals,
worked as recreation leader for City
of Denver Recreation Department and Ed-
ucation Coodinator for War on Poverty
Head Start, El Paso County. She attended
Colorado University.
Mrs. Wheller taught in Englewood for
three year as a counselor and business
teacher. She has a B.S. from Oklahoma
State University and M.A. from Univer-
sity of Minnesota.

Most people don't realize what hard work
has to be put forth by the cooks, custo-
dians and bus drivers, in helping Ranum
be successful.
Without the faithful efforts of the cooks,
how would the students and teachers be
able to finish the day? Arriving around
7:30 to prepare the lunches; the cooks,
frequently receive the brunt of good
natured joking, are never the less re-
warded with satisfied smiles.
Ranum's own custodians add a touch of
pride as they keep the school in tip
top shape. They arrive at different times
throughout the day. Most of the cus-
todians start cleaning the school at 2:30,
when school is dismissed.
The bus drivers help bring high at-
tendence records to Ranum. They start
at 7:00 A.M. and with their last run
ending around 4:00 P.M. They serve
the Elementary and Jr. High Schools,
as well as Westminster High School
and Ranum.

Mr. Jokum and Mr. Dunn.

Two new faculty members have taken over
the Art Department; they are Mr. Dunn,
and Mr. Jokum.
Mr. Dunn is originally from Iowa and
taught in Boulder and Littleton before
making himself available to Ranum High
art students.
The other half of the Art Department,
Mr. Jokum, is originally from Nebraska.
He taught in Omaha, Jefferson County,
and at Shaw Heights Junior High before
joining the Ranum faculty.
The Art Department has added sculpture
classes to its curriculum, which is taught
by both teachers.

The Business Department offers a wide
variety of courses which motivate in-
terest in the business world. Added to
the past curriculum is Diversified Oc-
cupations, taught by Mr. Ramey. The
purpose of this course is to teach stu-
dents Industrial trades and services.
Mr. Ramey teaches the course the first
three periods of the day and then checks
on students at their jobs.
Mr. Ramey taught in Montrose four-
teen years before joining Ranum's fac-
ulty.
Mr. Ramey, Mr. Le May, Mrs. Asnicar, Mrs. Nelson, Mr. Tulley, Mrs. Jennings, Mrs. Stark, Mr.

A new look has been adopted in the
Physical Education Department. The
classes have selected new uniforms,
which add color and uniformity to the
P. E. classes.
In place of the one piece white uni-
forms, the girls are now wearing two
piece suits. The tops are white and
the shorts are kelly green, with num-
bers that match on both. There has
been an improvement in the boy's uni-
forms, they have green gym trunks
with reversible gold and green tea-
shirts.
There has also been a change in the
curriculum in the P. E. Department.
The girls department is offering a wide
variety of courses. The girls choose
their own teacher, class period, and
sports.
Among the teachers for the girls to
choose from are Mrs. Macro, Mrs. Coff-
man, and Miss Hrubesky. Miss Hrubesky,
a new teacher to Ranum, is originally
from Nebraska and taught in California
and Michigan before joining Ranum's
faculty.
Mr. Humphrey, Miss Hrubesky, Mrs. Macro, Mr. Hinton, Mrs. Coffman, and Mr. Baretta.

Backrow--Mr. Marcucci, Mr. Bassett, Mr. Markoff,Mrs.Bondurant,Mr. Easley, Mr. Meyers. Second Row--Mr. Dittman, Mr. Sandavol
Mr. Gugliemelli, Mr. Buhler, Mrs. Mueller, Miss Saier, and Mr. Abbott. Front—Mr. Logston.

History is the key to the future. Every
important period in history would be
buried in the dust, unrecognized, were
it not for written documents. The pri-
mary goal of American History is to
enable the student to better under-
stand the present by learning about the
past with the end result being that he
will become a better citizen.' Today
through the study of history, we can try
to understand and avoid the mistakes of
the past.
This year to aid in the analysis and
interpretation of the past, we welcome
Miss Saier, Mrs. Bondurant, and Mrs.
Easley to the history department.
New courses offered by the department
this year are: Anthropology, Sociology
of Religions, Asian History, The Set-
tlement of the West, and Minority Group
Relations in the United States. The His-
tory Department is striving to make the
courses more selective so that the stu-
dent may study a particular area of
interest.

One of man's greatest gifts is his
ability to communicate thoughts, ideas,
and emotions through words. Man with
this gift can leave a legacy of himself
to future generations. At Ranum, the
English Department's aim is to develop
the capacity of each student to appreciate
the writings of some of the world's
greatest writers and thinkers and to
develop the student's power to express
himself clearly and logically.
Mrs. Wayne, one of last year's English
teachers, is now assisting at Colorado
University. This year, Miss Britten,
Mrs. Davidson, Mr. McNally, Mrs. Per-
kins, Miss Ricketts, and Mrs. Schroeder
have been added to the staff.
The new system in the English Depart-
ment this year includes the use of
S's and U's. This method tends to
help the student concentrate more on
learning and less on grades. The usual
grades will be given at the end of each
semester. New classes have also been
added to the curriculum. One of them,
Contemporary Readings, is basically a
search for the problems and the under-
standing of these problems in contem-
porary society by reading articles in
magazines and newspapers, studying
contemporary drama, art, and music.
A prospective class is the EnglishClinic.
Here, each student will receive extra
help on his special English problems.
So far, this class will only be for one
period; but Mrs. Sparkman, the depart-
ment head, is hoping to have it six
periods each day.
Backrow--Mr. Davis, Mr. McNally, Mr. Burdick, Mr. Davey, Mr. Winkler, Second Row--Miss Britten, Mrs. Abell, Mrs. Schroeder,
Miss Farrell, Mrs. Crane. First Row--Miss Hacker, Miss Ricketts, Mrs. Washburn, Mrs. Counts, Miss Sime, Mrs. Perkins, Mrs.
Schrack. Not pictured are Mrs. Frye and Mrs. Davidson. Frent—Mrs. Sparkman.

Mrs. Willis, Mrs. Mahoney, and Mrs. Morris-(head librarian).

The library at Ranum High is a ma-
terials center in which one can search
for the answers to one's questions.
Its nucleus of knowledge and ideas is
awakening many students to the real
meaning of life.
In addition to the 10,000 books and
112 magazine subscriptions the library
also has 24 magazine subscriptions on
micro-film. The micro-film is some-
thing new at Ranum this year. Students
are able to read filmed magazine ai—
tides by using the film readers. Also
new in the library are the A.V. cat-
alogues which are filed by subject. Stu-
dents may look up any subject on these
cards and get corresponding material
on filmstrips, tapes, and slides. There
is one copy machine which duplicates
anything that is printed on a page.
The "Secretary" copier is also new.
This machine laminates, makes spirit
masters and transparencies.
A new addition to the library staff is
Mrs. Willis. She is formerly from
Colorado Springs, where she was a
junior high librarian for one year.

Uniting other worlds is the chief aim
of the foreign language department. Com-
munications in French, German, Russian
and Spanish further world understanding
and appreciation. Foreign language stu-
dents awaken to the real meaning of
life through branching out into the cul-
tural and social part of foreign society.

terior Decorating, Family living, and
Home Management & Child Care?

As in previous years the Industrial
Arts Department offer two years of
Drafting I through IV, Architectural
Drafting and Engineering Drafting.
Drafting I provides the student with
the basic skills and procedures in draft-
ing, Architectural Drafting which is a
more advanced course, requires more
notes and dimensioning information than
Drafting I. Architectural Drafting gives
the architect the chance to express his
individuality.
In the metal classes the boys learn
the procedures and materials needed
in the metal profession. They are re-
quired to go through five stations of
metal work which consists of three
projects per station.
In the wood classes the boys learn
skills in carpentry. In this course the
students are required to make three
wood projects during the semester.
These basic economic courses require
that certain projects of the study are
met.
In Clothing I students have to complete
three garments and have the basicskills
to go on to Clothing II, which requires
three garments, one of which has to be
lined. Tailoring is offered second se-
mester, requires either a suit or coat
made of wool and fully lined.
Interior Decorating teaches about dec-
orating a home and requires a se-
mester project of planning and drawing
an entire home.
Home Management and Child Care con-
sists of nine weeks on each subject.
Home Management teaches how to man-
age a budget, shop for a family or
arrange a room for better management.
The Child Care course consists of having
speakers and a deep study of a child's
early life.
Family Living consists of studying a
complete cycle, from early dating, en-
gagement, early married life to the first
child.
Both girls and boys Foods classes are
basically the same. Foods I deals with
nutrition, balanced meals and preparing
simple meals. Foods II is a course
furthering the study, with more difficult
meals.
Mrs. Gilpin, Miss Dickman, and Miss Mitchell
16
Girls Glee, Boys Glee, Mixed Chorus,
and Acapella Cnoir make up the choral
department of Ranum High School. Under
the direction of Mrs. Eanes, they per-
form throughout the year.
The other half of Ranum's music de-
partment consists of band. Led by Mr.
Cavalier, Ranum's advanced band per-
forms during half time at football games
and school assemblies and gives con-
certs during the year. Advanced band
consists of marching and concert bands
and succeded again this fall to take a
superior rating at C.U. Band Day.
A new addition to the musical depart-
ment is the orchestra under the direction
of Mr. Zeka. This is the first year
for orchestra at Ranum. In the past,
students wanting this class had to go
to Westminster High School.
Also offered is a class in music theory
which studies musical techniques, com-
position, and appreciation for different
types of music.

Under the direction of Mr. Blaser, Mr.
Fox, and Mr. Vernon, the Driver's Train-
ing Department aims to give the stu-
dent the practice of the driving skills
which were learned in Driver's Ed-
ucation in the sophomore year. Stu-
dents are submitted to the traffic of the
downtown Denver area as well as that
of the Boulder, Brighton, Broomfield
and Louisville areas. Upon completion of
the four week Driver's Training course
the student receives a trained drivers
card, which states that he has satis-
factorily passed the course.

Marching Band
The Ranum Marching Band took part in
eight half time shows this season. Once
again the band recieved a straight
division 1 rating by all judges in all
areas of marching competition at the
University of Colorado Band Day. The
band performed for the American Hockey
League, Denver Spurs vs. San Diago
Gulls, last November. The Concert Band
is an eighty piece band that plays vir-
tually all types of music in the concert
ensemble. There was a kick off concert
on the first Tuesday of December as
Concert Band season began. They played
in the winter concert on February 11.
The Jazz ensemble is a large ensemble
that is unique in that the students are
engaged in the learningofdiscrimination
in Jazz. They have several during the
year and state competition contest. They
played at the Denver Spurs Hockey game
January 25 at the Denver Colisium.
They performed at the Westminster
Chamber of Commerce Dance. In the
spring they played at a Jazz concert
with a solo artist. The instrumental
music department was host to world re-
nowned saxophone and clarinet artist
Vincent J. Abate, February tenth and
eleventh. Mr. Abate rehearsed with the
band and instructed the students and
band directors in clinic sessions, then
performed on concert with band the
evening of February 11. Mr. Abato re-
cieved his training at Peabody Con-
servatory of Music and JuiIliard School
of Music where he later became a mem-
ber of the faculity. He has appeared with
nations leading symphony orchestras
under such conductors as Leopold Sto-
koski, William Steinburg, and Percy
Faith.

Ranum had sixteen returning lettermen this
year. The prospect for next year looks good
because Ranum has two upcoming teams. These
are the Junior Varsity and the Sophomore
team. Mr. Blazer says "It was real gratifying
to work with such a fine squad of gentle-
men." In spite of the fact that Ranum took
fourth in the league Mr. Blazer still thinks
we have the best team in the league.

Ranum High School has a right to be
proud of its Cross Country team. Under
the direction of Coach Dick Roush and
co-captains Dan Huff and Mike Garcia,
the boys developed self-discipline and
great determination. Because Cross-
Country is not a glory sport, and spec-
tators are few, they learned to run for
their own pride and that of the school.
Their work paid off as both A and B
squad placed first in the league, with C
squad a close second in their division,
and in the most important meet of the
year—STATE—the A squad placed 6th,
which was a tremendous achievement. It's
about time everyone realized what a
great program we have in the Cross-
Country team.

The varsity basketball team has done excep-
tionally well this season. Coach Flynn says
"This was the finest group of men he has ever
coached." There were four returning letterman
this year. They were Mike Stache, senior,
Steve Stoecker, senior, Tom Mills, senior,
Rick Zimmerman, junior. The defense of the
team was the best asset but the offense came
along with exceptional hard work on the part
of the team. They played well andweare proud
of them! This year we welcome Coach Flynn
to Ranum who recently coached at Yuma
Colorado.

dual meet record with 1 1 wins and 1
loss for the year. They were first in the
Ranum Invitational and the Arvada West
Invitational, where the grapplers stopped
three teams rated in the top 10 in state.

cellent chance of defending their crown as
District Champions. They also had high
hopes for the team in State competition

The Ranum Roundup is founded upon
the belief that a student newspaper ful-
fills a vital function in school life. It
declares the following to be its purposes:
to reflect the activities, to improve
communications, to inform the com-
munity, to create and express school
opinion, to provide an outlet for student
suggestions, to encourage and stimulate
worthwhile activities, to express the
idealism and reflect the spiritof Ranum,
to increase support for effective student
government and to maintain the tradtions
and good reputation of Ranum High
School.

The Raider Annual staff, also known as
the Publications Class, consisted of
twelve Senior girls taking the sixth hour
class. The staff worked dilligently to
meet their numerous deadlines, wnich
fell between Nov. 1 and Feb. 15, when
the book was finalized. The remaining
school months were spent leisurely plan-
ning the 16-page supplement. All R.H.S.
students who purchased a 69 Raider will
be entitled to the free supplement de-
livered in the Fall of 1969.
There are very few means by which
a young writer, whose work is wanted
by his contemporaries, can have his
works published. His writings are written
for young people who share the same likes
and dislikes. The purpose of the Radar
is to provide a common communication
between the students of Ranum.

Future Teachers of America was founded
on the idea that teachers are the builders
of civilization. There are three main pur-
poses of F.T.A.; to be an organization
where students who think they might be
interested in teaching can explore the
profession, to foster and develop char-
acter, leaderhip, and other qualities es-
sential to a good teacher, and to be of
service to our school and faculty. Most
F.T.A. members have been student
teaching in elementary schools, and
others are going to work with emotional ly
handicapped children. Special projects
were sponsoring the Alumni Tea and
making Christmas stockings for the
faculty. Future plans include a party for
Headstart children, attending the state
F.T.A. convention in March and touring
C.S.U. In the spring a scholarship wi 11
be awarded to an outstanding senior.

The club concentrated on the spiritual
aspect of balanced life because it is

The Ranum Choral Department is comprised of
the A Cappella Choir, Mixed Chorus and Boy's
and Girl's Glee Clubs. Of these, the performing
group is the choir. However, each year all groups
in the department take part in the Christmas
Concert.
Before this program rolled around on the 1968
music calendar, the A Cappella Choir had sung
at the first Ranum Booster's meeting, the Student
Council sponsored Patriotic Assemly and the annual
Fall Concert given in early November.
The week of the Christmas presentation, choir
members caroled in the Westminster Plaza and
presented an impromptu program for visiting fourth
graders from Utah Junction.
Slated to keep the choir busy thru graduation time
and past were visits by three or more clinicians
from local universities and colleges and participa-
tion in the second annual "Back to God and Country"
service held by the American Legion Post number
5 at Brighton High School, the big Spring musical
"West Side Story" scheduled for May 10th, 11th,
and 12th at Ranum, Baccalaureate service, and,
finally, singing with the Brico Symphony Opera
Festival in three concerts during the last weeks
of May at George Washington High School.
Auxiliary performing groups comprised of choir
members are theShowChoir and the Ranum Trouba-
dours, a 14-voice boys ensemble. For the fourth
consecutive year the Troubadours were in frequent
demand to sing all over the Denver and Metro-
politan area. Included on the agenda were a De-

50 Credit Union banquet and the state-wide County
