Dedication
As a humble token of appreciation for
fourteen years of dedicated service to the
school system and community of Canfield, this
yearbook is dedicated to Mr. E. E. Francis.
His guidance and administrative leadership
along with a deep concern for each individual
student have combined to pave our road to
scholastic maturity. Mr. Francis’ good-natured
presence and friendly counsel during our years
in the halls of Canfield High have helped pre-
pare us for our journey through the corridors
of time.

Foreword
Within these pages
Time is shackled.
Indelibly held
By the printer’s art.
Today it’s real
Used to reminisce
adolescence.
Shadowy now,
Clouded by the mist
of time,
But never forgotten.

SENIORS
To Heaven
May 17, at 9:00 p.m., the doors of Canfield High’s
gym opened and for a few brief moments Canfields
Juniors and Seniors enjoyed “A Little Bit of Heaven.”
What could be more fitting than to have St. Peter
himself greet the visitors as they arrived? Frankie
Ambrose and his orchestra provided the sounds as
Canfield students and their dates danced under billow-
ing clouds of blue and white till midnite.
Following the short-lived trip to heaven the tuxes
and formats were shed for more informal attire and
activities were adjourned to Wedgewood Lanes. Be-
ginning at 2:00 a.m. back-to-earth activities included
dancing to the music of the Glass Harp, bowling, and
billiards until 6:00 a.m.

Girls Gymnastics was
the newest addition to
Canfield’s athletic pro-
gram this year. Under
the supervision of Miss
Mary Lou Moss, girls
in grades 9-12 competed
in the five areas of gym-
nastics. Girls performed
routines on the uneven
parallel bars, balance
beam, vaulting horse,
tumbling, and floor ex-
ercises. The team fared
well in interscholastic
competition and should
have a strong nucleus
for next year's squad
with many girls return-
ing.

A First at CHS
Canfield fielded a cross-country team,
for the first time ever, this year. The team
was successful against some of the best
schools in the area, rather an unexpected
surprise for first year competition. The
Cardinals, coached by Mr. Nass, also
fared well in post-season competition and
sent one runner, Dave Stanley, to the
regional meet at Akron. The season was
climaxed by a team trip to Columbus to
witness the state cross-country meet.

Fall Play
On November 8 and 9, the CHS auditorium was
transformed into the Cloisters, a plush insane
asylum. John Patrick’s insanely humorous “The
Curious Savage” was the first presentation of this
year’s dramatic season.
The play strives to distinguish the fine line be-
tween the insanely sane and the sanely insane, by
dealing with the problems of Mrs. Savage. Plan-
ning to set up a memorial fund to her husband with
the entire Savage estate, S10,000,000, she finds
herself confined to the asylum by her children
under a trial commitment.
The play proceeds through several blackouts,
various interruptions by the young Savages, and
the theft of the millions. The final curtain finds
Mrs. Savage regaining her freedom and her money.

“FOR THOMAS”
Experimental Theater
For the second year, Thespian Troupe 1183 presented an evening of Experi-
mental Theater, four one-act plays produced entirely by Canfield students.
Directed by members of the Troupe, casts and crews devoted five weeks of hard
work to producing a polished performance. All involved learned valuable lessons
in organization and diplomacy. They discovered the thrill and headaches of
getting a show ready for “opening night.” Plays included “The Open Window,”
directed by Nils Johnson and Karen Trimbur; “The Widow’s Plight or Virture
Victorious,” directed by Sue Creed and Becky Johnson; “To Burn A Witch,” di-
rected by Linda Sharrer and Nancy Shaw; and “For Thomas,” an original
drama by Canfield junior, John Post, directed by Beth Workman.

“Twelve Angry Men”
The jury files into the deliberation
room and a drama greater than that of
the tension-filled courtroom is about to
begin. One man is dead, and as the
twelve jurors grapple with the fate of
the accused murderer, they find that
they are battling not only with the facts
of the case, but also with their own per-
sonalities and prejudices.
The dramatic overtones of this pro-
duction were well-defined by the young-
er. yet experienced cast. Strong perform-
ances by Ken Lucas and Sue Creed
were well received by the audience. Gary
Deckant’s first appearance on stage pro-
duced a vigorous portrayal and a con-
sistent German accent. Veteran actors
also did fine jobs in supporting roles.

Chorus
“Ballads
for
Americans”
This year's concert choir, under the direction of
Mrs. Kay Sittig, performed in many assemblies at CHS.
Thanksgiving. Christmas, and Easter are just a few of
the programs that were enhanced by Mrs. Sittig’s tal-
ented chorus. The choir’s accomplishments, however,
were not limited to school functions and assemblies.
They provided the community with quality music at
Fourth of July Celebrations, Memorial Day and Christ-
mas. as well as participated in the All-County Music
Festival at Boardman Jr. High.
The highlight of the year came in March when the
choral music department presented their spring musi-
cal, “Ballads for Americans.” The program consisted
of famous American folksongs and ballads performed
in a unique and professional manner. The fine recep-
tion of the show by the audience was a tribute to the
choir and their director.

Tigers, ghosts, and roller skates were a part of the Tri-Hi-Y
service program for 68-69. Besides participating with other
area students in the annual Civic Day, Tri-Hi-Y’s 71 girls
served their community in many ways. Some of these included
sewing squeezable stuffed tigers for underprivileged children,
producing a play for the Cerebral Palsy Center, and sponsoring
skating parties for the grade school children. The club sent two
delegates, Beth Workman and Linda Spees, to the Youth-In-
Government convention in Columbus.

Y-Teens
The purpose of Y-Teens is to help a girl grow as a person, grow in friendship
with people of all races, religions, and nationalities, grow in the knowledge and
love of God.
This purpose was accomplished through service projects and social occasions
throughout the year. Some projects and socials included collecting foodstuffs for
a needy family at Thanksgiving, stuffing toys for an orphanage at Christinas,
planting flowers in the west student court, an Easter egg hunt for pre-schoolers,
a bake sale for the girls gymnastic team, and an end-of-the-year picnic.

Commencement
The slow, ritualistic strains of “Pomp
and Circumstance” introduced the 194
solemn graduates of the Class of ’69.
Reverend Michael Shahan delivered
the Baccalaureate address stressing the
intrinsic goodness of life.
Jeanne Sankey and Scott Shorten rep-
resented the senior class by philosophiz-
ing on the class motto.
Graduation is the portal, a door to the
future, through which many pass never
to return—hut always to remember.
