FOREWORD
Neither bricks and mortar nor students and
teachers can fully embody the meaning of
Forrestville High School. For the school is,
essentially, an experiment— testing whether a
predominantly black institution of learning can
develop in black youth the social awareness,
moral rectitude, and academic excellence re-
quired of all men who would safeguard their
freedom, preserve the best of their heritage,
and control their own destinies in this turbulent
time of crisis and change.
Forrestville and their
part in school organi-
zations.

restville.
ADMINISTRATION
The guiding force behind the Forrest-
ville student and teacher is our devoted
administration. The principals are like
conductors of a symphony orchestra of
students and teachers. Each teacher, be-
cause of his respective field, has his
own, particular instrument to play. The
audience is the active and participating
student body who enjoy the music that is
played. As conductors, the principals,
assistant principals and administrative
aides know the music of education and
excellence. So it is no wonder that they
hear from both the teachers and students
the demand of "lead on".

DEDICATION
7,

K

To Mrs. Barbara A. Sizemore, principal of
Forrestville High School from September 1965
to June 1967, the 1967-68 Re- Ville Staff de-
dicates its first publication. We wish to extend
our gratitude to her for playing the most im-
portant role in laying the foundation of the
activities of Forrestville High School. Without
her leadership many of the items forthcoming
would have been impossible.
To Mrs. Sizemore, we wish to offer our
highest esteem, but most of all we offer our
gratitude and affection.
The 1967-68 Re-Ville Staff

Your accomplishment reflects the courage that is inherent in the history of our people. We congratulate
you on sustaining your aspirations for excellence and for not making peace with mediocrity.
The glory of graduation is fleeting. As you receive the adulation of those around you, keep your thoughts on
the realities of this cold world. Your progression through the myriad paths of endeavors will depend on the
further development of your present abilities, values, and goals.
We look upon each of you as tire hope of the future.
Mr. Jack Mitchell

ASSISTANT
PRINCIPALS
Mr. Frank Allen
It is with a deep sense of humility that we at Forrestville accept the legacy left
to us by you, the Senior class of 1968. Because of you we know ourselves a little
better.
Through your common effort and your example there has developed within all of us
a deeper awareness of the dignity and worth of blackness.
You have left a marker pointing toward the road to freedom for all black people.

ACADEMICS
"A little learning is a dangerous thing;
drink deep or taste not the Pierian speing".
This famous quotation from Alexander
Pope seems to reflect accurately the kind
of attitude Forrestvillites have toward
learning and self improvement. It gives
us an immense sense of pride to have
had a National Scholastic winner at our
school. Carolyn Haynes' achievement
serves to reinforce our fervid desire for
scholastic excellence.

SPORTS
If you think our basketball and football
teams were out of sight this season, wait
until next year. This year's teams were
forced to play under severe handicaps,
but still they played with such skill and
desire that they served notice to every-
one that next year Forrestville will be
number one. We realize that if enough
loyal men of Forrestville join them, we
will take it all.

The basketball court is un-
dersized and .unsuitable for

i are played at the Washington
I Park Fieldhouse, 55th and
South Park Way, which is rent-
ed for $25 a game from the
,1 Park District. Each contest.
regardless of the outcome, is
a box office loss with receipts
failing to equal rental fee,
IN SPITE of conditions that
would have strong men weep-
ing in frustration, coach Char-
les Allen turned out a repre-
sentative team this season,
finishing in a fourth place tie
in the Central-Blue Division.
Compounding his problems
was the mid-season loss
through eligibility of his top
player, 6-5 Charles Jones,
which jolted hopes for a gen-
uine run at the Division title.
"It was a shame," says Al-
len, "because we thought it
was sports that was keeping
him in school. He was a junior
and didn't come out last year.
so this was his first season.
"All our teachers try to
keep a close check on grades
and attendance, because it's
easy for some kids to drop out.
“WE DID that with Charles,
kept after him and talked all
ihe time. I knew he was hav-
ing trouble, but he'd have
passed if he hadn't been ab-
sent so often. His teachers
just couldn't do it.
"You know, many times, the
very kids who become drop-
outs, get after the younger
ones and tell them to stay in
school, explaining that’s their
' only hope and don’t make the
. same mistake they did.
"We think that sports helps,
but when you've got to oper-
ate under conditions like this,
it becomes rough. All you can
do is try and help, maybe
, pray a little that they'll stay
| in school.”
Finish 4th
in first
season
Expansion and victory sel-
dom are synonomous in the
world of athletics. Newcomers
to professional competition
have found it so in spite of ex-
pensive franchises.
Perhaps, then, it isn’t sur-
prising that a first-year entry
on the prep level runs into dif- l
liculty, especially in the Chi-
cago Public League where •
even the established schools,
are burdened with the crush-
ing weight of inadequate facili-
ties and thin coaching staffs.
For every rule, though,
there's an exception as has
been shown this season at For-
restville High School, a first-
year varsity member. Al-
though new in terms of parti-
cipation, the school occupies
an ancient structure that once
was home to the old Dunbar .
High at 44th and St. Lawrence.
THERE ARE plans, and
hopes, that a new building will
be erected to serve the neigh-
borhood. For the present,
though, 1,700 students are en-
rolled. attending class and
participating in a limited phy-
sical education program along
with competing fairly success-
fully in competitive basket-
ball.
The lone gym, with a com-
plete lack of locker and show-
er facilities, is inadequate to
handle physical education
classes. The youngsters must
change in the open, stack
clothing on the gym floor, and
climb back into everyday
garb after exercises without
showers.
Some students are shipped
to nearby Woodson elemen-
tary school, where supplemen-
tal gym classes are held, or
to a church at 46th and Ellis

FAREWELL
We have attempted to reveal Forrestville High School,
in the 1967-68 RE-VILLE. We hope that we have given you
a glimpse of Forrestville, a school unique, in every sense of
the word.
We ask that you bear with us for any discrepancies, for
this is our first effort in the yearbook field. We hope that
in the future years through additional experience, dedication,
and support, we can present even better glimpses.
Sincerely yours,
Editor-in-Chief
RE-VILLE

Shield:•
Or, sable, and vert.
Parted quarterly supported by mantling of the first and the second. In the Dexter Chief, a symbol
for the men of the second on a field of the first. In the sinister chief, a mask and lyre of the first
on a field of the second. Issuing from the fess point, a pine tree of the third. In the dexter base,
a Queen head sculpture of the first on a field of the second. In the sinister base, a symbol for the
women of the second on a field of the first. Below the shield, a ribbon inscribed with Forrestville
H. S.
Crest:
On a torse of the first and second a head of a jaguar couped proper. The symbol for men represent
the men of Forrestville and their part in school organizations. The mask and lyre symbolized the
schools insistence on having complete and rewarding participation in various music and drama
programs. The pine tree is taken from the Forrest coat of arms. The Classic Nubile Beauty is
a solid ebony sculptured head of an African village belle with authentic tribal headdress and
classic elongated ears symbolizes the simple beauty and traditional heritage of the women of
Forrestville. The symbol for women represent the women of Forrestville and their part in
school organizations. The Jaguar is the school mascot.
