DEDICATION
To An
Outstanding
Teacher
Mr. Sgroi
This year THE GALAXY YEARBOOK published by
Boys Vocational High School is dedicated to Mr.
Humphrey O. Sgroi. Mr. Sgroi's major field of
endeavor has been in the area of Industrial Arts and
Vocational Education. His overall work experiences
outside the area of education have been extensive.
Mr. Sgroi's experiences have ranged from private
construction thru that of a Retail Hardware Store
owner. Education has occupied the greatest number
of years in Mr. Sgroi's life. He graduated from
Buffalo Public School #1, Buffalo Technical High
School, and Buffalo State College for Teachers
(Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts). He earned
a Certificate for teaching English and Citizenship
Education to foreign bom adults, and a Certificate
in Safety Education and Drivers Training at Penn
State College, Pennsylvania. Mr. Sgroi installed
the Driving Training Course at Burgard Vocational
High School in February of 1939. He is credited
with being the first driver-training instructor in the
Buffalo School System.
Mr. Sgroi's background has more than qualified
him for his successful day school teaching career.
His teaching experiences can be summed up as
follows: Central Continuation School (1928-30),
Amherst Central High School (1931-34), Boys Vo-
cational High School (1934-1960 and 1964-68).
Mr. Sgroi's teaching Career was interrupted be-
tween 1960-64 when he assumed the Directorship
of the Buffalo Public Schools Warehouse. This
dedicated teacher's teaching experiences were ex-
tended by his work in Night School Teaching. Mr.
Sgroi taught Americanization Classes at Hutchinson
Central High School and Safety Education and
Driver Training at Burgard Vocational High School.
Under the National Defense Program, Mr. Sgroi
taught Sheet Metal and Blue Print Reading and
Tracing at Boys Vocational High School.
The organizations to which Mr. Sgroi belongs are so
numerous that we must limit them to the Buffalo
Teachers Federation, New York State Teachers
Association, Class Room Teachers Association, New
York State Practical Arts Association, Buffalo
Schoolmasters Association, Buffalo Public School
Counselors Association, President of the South
Buffalo Lions Club 1966-68, Romulus Club, Holy
Name Society, Abbott-South Park Business Men's
Association, New York State Retail Hardware
Association, Boy Scouts of America and The
Board of Managers of the South Buffalo Y.M.C.A.
The Faculty and student body of Boys Vocational
High School want to take this opportunity to express
their heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Sgroi for his
di dication to working with boys. May good health
and happiness keep Mr. Sgroi with us for many
years to come.

FOREWORD
There lias been much controversy in the world on how to
keep peace between nations In order to have peace be-
tween nations, we should begin with developing a sense of
peace and harmony among the student body at Boys Voca-
tional High School.
The United States tries to make peace overtures toward
other nations with which it is in conflict. How can we, a
powerful nation, obtain peace in the world when in our city
rioters, draft-card burners and other groups help to destroy
the image of our democratic way of life as it is taught to
us at Boys Vocational High School.
One of the big reasons for not having peace in this world is
that every nation wants to be the supreme power. Today,
there are many good examples to prove this to be true. A
big, powerful nation commits an act of agression toward an
underdeveloped nation that is too weak to resist. An eco-
nomically disadvantaged people have a substandard educa-
tion, a lack of food and are sometimes suffering from dis-
ease. These people sometimes do not know which side to
turn to.
Another controversy dealing with peace, which we have be-
come familiar with at Boy's Vocational High School, is the
exploration of outer space. Today, there is a fast and grow-
ing race to the moon. Billions and billions of dollars are
spent in one year for space exploration. The reason for
this is that the nation which is first on the moon can control
the world. This philosophy does not help to contribute to
peace in the world. Might not some of our human effort and
a portion of this money be more wisely used toward helping
underdeveloped nations improve their status in the world?
