W. W. Brock, Jr. Principal
Evaluation Determined the
Effectiveness of the Program
A self-study of the entire school was the major goal
for 1966-67 as a means of being prepared for eval-
uation in 1968. As the overall chairman of the self-
study, Mr. Brock had an increased work load. Even
though there was more for him to do, Mr. Brock still
had time to listen to students and teachers, and to
support school activities.
Clutching his hat, Mr. Brock moves toward his seat at the
Tee Jay-JayEm Homecoming game.
10
C. Russell Norment, Assistant Principal
Many of the responsibilities of the assistant principals
fall into the category of routine duties, but both Mr.
Van Cleef and Mr. Norment worked wjtlr the students
to attain a higher disciplinary standard for Thomas
Jefferson. Mr. Van Cleef resumed tire sponsorship of
the Honor Council. Mr. Norment continued to serve
as sponsor for the Key Club.
H. I. Willett, Superintendent
Richmond Public Schools
The encouragement and the support of both Dr. Wil-
lett, the superintendent, and the Richmond City School
Board, the city wide self-study strengthened the pro-
gram of the city schools including the program of
Thomas Jefferson.

Mrs. Bennett Named to
Succeed Miss Jordan
After the retirement of Miss Mary G. Jordan at the
close of the 1965-66 school year, Mrs. Mozelle P.
Bennett was chosen to succeed her as Head of the
Guidance Department. In this role Mrs. Bennett con-
tinued the work with the junior high schools which had
been started by Miss Jordan. In addition she devel-
oped a different approach in working with the de-
partment heads in senior and junior high schools to
set up a better method for the identification of the
students who need help in reading. This program
helped both the slow reader and the one who needed
to increase his reading speed and comprehension.

The ninth grade group studied
computer programming; the up-
per classes were offered help in
set theory, statistics, and matrix

Art, Music and Theatre
Enriched Humanities
Miss Mary P. Maddox, Head of the History Depart-
ment took advantage of the art-history lectures spon-
sored by the Junior League, to add breadth to the
Ninth Grade history classes. These lectures provided
a link with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, so the
students were able to get an early start in humanities.
The November election added interest to the govern-
ment classes, since they had a close look at election
and voting procedures.
A feature in Miss Tankard’s Humanities class was the
creation of an original design. The exhibit held by
the two classes showed much originality and some
real talent. New, also, this year was the combined
approach added by the assistance of Miss Davis, voice
teacher. Her work in music gave a different concept
in music appreciation.
Bus loads of students attended a professional show-
ing of the play The Subject IFas Roses. Using a grant
it had received, the Virginia Museum Theatre made it
possible for more than seven hundred students to see
professional theatre as well as to have some instruc-
tion about the theatre, and to converse with the pro-
fessional cast.

French Teacher Used
Scholarship for Summer Study
In recognition for his essay, the American Association of
Teachers of French awarded Mr. Ernest C. Perry a prize
of one thousand dollars to be used for a trip to France.
While he was in Paris, Mr. Perry studied at the Sorbonne
so that he might enrich his teaching of French. During
the current school year, he has taught a course in 20th cen-
tury history using the French language as the language of
the class. This is a new step for the Language Department
which hopes to add other courses in academic subjects in
a foreign language.
In addition to his work with the French classes, Mr. Perry
is quite willing to work in the extra curricular program.
Often he serves as a chaperon on the bus taking students

Newest Counselor Had
Interesting Summer Work
One often wonders what a counselor does other
than help students set up programs of study. Miss
Vashti Hammett has an answer. As the newest
counselor in our school, she has responsibility for
the 11th grade. She spent the summer before re-
porting for work at Tee Jay, working at the Navy
Weapons Depot at Dalghren. Her role was that of
heading up the Youth Opportunity Program. She
worked with both the undergraduate employees
and the adults who wished to improve their edu-
cation at the secondary level.

was able to keep the same sponsor who was cho-
sen when the students were in the Ninth Grade.
Mrs. Arietta Estes Turner has encouraged and
advised the Class of 1967 in a variety of proj-
ects and activities. Now that the time for grad-
uation has come, we the Senior Class extend to
our sponsor, Mrs. Turner our gratitude and ap-

Annual Class Play Succeeded
Chosen, directed and staged by members of the
Senior Class, the play Fantasticks was presented on
two consecutive nights in February. Class members
who were not engaged in the play and its presenta-

ets. By much hard work and real determination, the
students made this a successful project for raising
money and at the same time offering entertainment

Graduation Is Not an
End, but a Beginning.
How soon four years comes to an encl. We have looked
forward to graduation for so long that it is hard to
believe that the day has come at last. We look back
fondly over the years and remember the achievement,
the frustration and the friendships that have been
ours. We have had time to train our minds so that we
can meet the challenge of college or work. Through
the many extra curricular activities we have developed
leadership skills and participation skills which we
feel will help us as we move ahead, ft is indeed true
that the future is ours. We leave to claim that future
with the assurance that the years at Thomas Jefferson
have prepared us for whatever lies ahead. As we say
goodbye to the past, we look to the future with an-
ticipation.

Cadets Participated
In School And Community
The Corps of Cadets was called upon to serve in
many ways during the year. The entire corps par-
ticipated in Armed Forces Day, the Tobacco Fes-
tival Parade, the Virginia State Fair and at all
football games. Under the leadership of Lt. Col.
Thomas A. Hotchkiss, the officers and members
of the companies strove for excellence in military
life. Early in October there was a review to honor
Elizabeth Szigeti, the sweetheart. The company
sponsors were recognized at Sponsors’ Day. The
Color Guard appeared before the Richmond Chap-
ter of the Red Cross, the United Daughters of the
Confederacy, and the Virginia Education Asso-
ciation. On a weekend trip to Camp Pickett the
Corps received training in range firing and tactics.

Library Committee
Helped Everyone
A group which receives little recognition
from the students is the Library Commit-
tee. If they were not at work during their
study periods, much of the smooth-func-
tioning of the library would be missing.
Working at the chargeout desk, checking
library cards, writing overdue notices,
and shelving books are some of the activ-
ities of this group. Some of them manage
the paperback book store so that students
may purchase books during the entire
school day.

Radio Committee Kept
Students Informed
The first voice that one heard each day was that of a
member of the Radio Committee. The P.A. was the
means of letting students know which clubs were
meeting, how the teams had done in the game the
day before, what pictures were to be taken, and what
had been lost. To keep the task from becoming too
burdensome, the members rotated as announcers.
Generally a different group was responsible each
day of a week. Morning devotions which followed the
announcements were handled by clubs and classes.
Literary Club Attended
Museum Dramas
The Literary Club chose Miss Constance Yeoman as
sponsor. She gave new leadership in the area of lit-
erary appreciation. Prior to each production at the
Virginia Museum Theatre, the club members studied
the play, and then as a group they attended a matinee
performance. Discussions centered around current
books added interest to club meetings.

Future Homemakers
Begin Second Year
The Future Homemakers of America,
in its second year as a club, was able
to expand its membership enough to
qualify for representation at the State
Convention. The girl who went brought
back more ideas for the success of the
club. To raise needed funds, the girls
sold cook books containing recipes do-
nated by teachers of home economics.
The activities during the year added
much to the membership appeal of the
club.

Forum Program Designed
to Interest and Inform
To become better informed about governmental and in-
ternational problems led the Forum Club to plan a se-
ries of program for the year. Starting off at home, Mayor
Morrill M. Crowe was invited to speak on the problems
of city government. The next program featured a panel
of students who had spent the summer in other coun-
tries. Then Elisabeth Szigeti, AFS student answered ques-
tions about France and gave her reactions to America.
Before the new session of Congress, Third District Rep-
resentative David E. Satterfield, III spoke on problems
facing Congress during the next two years. Tours dur-
ing the year included visits to the restored area of St.
John’s Church, the Valentine Museum, the Virginia Gen-
eral Assembly and Washington, D.C.
Before Representative David Satterfield, III could reach
the meeting of the Forum, he was met by students who
wanted to ask questions concerning the next session of
Congress.

Choir Presented
One Act Opera
Many new experiences came to the A Cap-
pella Choir during the year. First, was the
coming of a new teacher of vocal music, Miss
Betty Davis. In December, the choir present-
ed “Trial by Jury” a one act opera by Gilbert
and Sullivan. This was a new event for them.
The formation of a Madrigal Choir was an-
other innovation. This group added greatly
to the Christmas program. Another" group of
girls comprised the Jeffettes who were much
in demand as entertainers. In the spring the
annual operetta was the highlight of tire mu-
sical year. The choir’s version of Annie Get
Your Gun played to a full house, and was
well received.

Roberts Earns First
Chair in Youth Symphony
Having fewer members this year did not handicap the or-
chestra, but it offered a challenge which was accepted. Kath-
leen Roberts, concert mistress earned the position, of the first
chair at the State String Convention and in the Richmond
Youth Symphony. Other members auditioned for Mr. Edgar
Schenkman and won places in the Youth Symphony Orches-
tra. Seven members of the orchestra played in the combined
orchestra composed of high school musicians during a con-
vocation for teachers at the Mosque. The fall concert was so
well received that a request concert was played for the stu-
dent body. During the year the orchestra assisted in the

Honor Society
Established
Providing additional opportunities
for interested students, the French
Club recognized outstanding stu-
dents by accepting them in the Na-
tional honor Society. In the fall the
members toured Washington to
visit foreign embassies. At Christ-
mas the club members sang carols
in French at St. Mary’s Hospital.
To support the school sponsored
Homecoming parade, the club en-
tered a float.

Russian Club
Reorganized in the current school term, the Russian Club be-
came one of the newest clubs in school. Mrs. Sarah Sartain,
sponsor, invited Dr. F. D. Kowtoniuk to speak before the club in
the fall. Dr. Kowtoniuk, a native of Kiev, spoke on the future of
US-USSR relations. Since he is chairman of the Department of
Russian and German Languages at Virginia Slate College, he
was able to give the students some expert help in their under-
standing of the Russian language. During Russian Week there
was an exhibition of Russian art to add to the students’ knowl-
edge of the customs and culture of this nation.

German Week in Spring
With much assistance from the faculty sponsor,
Miss Lucinda Benjamin, the German Club worked
to raise the level of school spirit by backing the
soccer team and attending the games. Transporta-
tion to games was a part of the effort to boost
school spirit. The float in the Homecoming Pa-
rade featured a “Hansel and Gretel” theme. At
a party in February*, enthusiastic members de-
signed posters to inform others about the German
language and culture during German Week.

Latin Clubs Combined
The fact that Latin is not a dead language was proved by the
activities of the Latin Club. Putting all Latin Clubs into one
club gave the students more talent to use in planning activ-
ities. Pictures and quotations kept students aware of the
influence of Latin in today’s world. During Latin Week post-
ers were used in the halls to help non-Latin students leam
more about the subject. A Catholic Priest came to explain to
the club members the changes in the ritual as the Catholic
Church began using English instead of Latin in the services.

The football field became a landing field when Adm. Thomas H. Moorer flew in from Norfolk as a guest of the Key Club to
address the student body.
Admiral Moorer Was Guest of Key Club
The year 1967 was another busy year for the Key
Club. Continuing a project which was begun earlier,
the Key Club members adopted a buddy at the Wil-
liam Byrd Community House. This led to parties, at-
tendance at sports’ events, and individual guidance as
needed by the little boys. One of the major events of
the first term was the presentation of Admiral Moorer
as a speaker at the “A” Assembly. The Admiral had

accepted an invitation extended by the Key Club pres-
ident. On April 13th student government leaders, club
presidents, publications editors and sponsors were
guests of the Key Club at a Leadership Banquet. The
club found time to include the usual Thanksgiving
baskets, a car smash, and buses for out of city games,
in its schedule.

A most valuable opportunity for senior members
was Visitation Day in April. They visited various
schools, observed in classrooms, and talked with

toward lockers. As a result the Class of

The Board of Co-ordination tied
together the non club organizations
the athletic department, the cadet

the Publications. Monthly meetings
gave opportunity to work together
to promote this phase of the school
program.
The use of the Hall Pass was a
means of promoting a better meth-
od for getting to meetings. This
was a project of the Club Affilia-
tions Committee. Evaluation of the
club activities in the school led to
the presentation of the Club of the
Year Awards to a sei-vice and an in-
terest club.
As a link between the Honor Coun-
cil and the Homeroom, the char-
acter committee functioned main-
ly to get information to the stu-
dents. The Thanksgiving baskets

Character Committee. Posters to
encourage honesty were placed in

Honesty Was Goal of Council
Through posters, assemblies, and assistance from die Character
Committee, the Honor Council promoted honesty among the students.
In September, Charles Raymaker, Chairman, spoke to the students
about the honor system at Thomas Jefferson High School. The Honor
Code togedier with information on the function of the council was
given each new student. Prior to die examination, die Honor Council
sponsored an assembly program concerning die importance of honesty.
During Honor Week, posters were placed in each homeroom to pro-
mote the idea diat “Honest Work Demands Honest Toil.” The eleven
members of the Honor Council worked throughout die year to make
honesty a way of life in all activities of die school.

School Record in ’66
A school record fell almost every time the 1967 wrestling
team stepped on the mat. Danny Spencer scored the most

Rosser completed their senior year undefeated. A shut-out
was recorded for the first time while Tee Jay topped forty
points five times.

Winning Tennis Team
This year’s tennis team continued the win-
ning tradition. With underclassmen com-
posing die team, there was great promise
for years to come. Hard work and great
devotion was the key factor in die team’s
quest for the state championship.

Cross Country Team Qualified for State Meet
Co-captains Harry Bear and Reaves Louthan led the
Thomas Jefferson cross country team to the most suc-
cessful season in the history of the school. The har-
riers’ record of ten wins, one loss and one tie was a
result of the long hours of practice and of the hun-
dreds of miles of running. The state championship
team from Tucker dealt the Jeffs the only defeat. Tee
Jay opened the season with a convincing 19-36 vic-
tory over Hermitage for its first win over this school.
Finishing fourteenth out of 150 places, Hany Bear
led the varsity runners to a 4th place finish in a 28
team field at the William and Mary Invitational
Championship. In the junior varsity division, fresh-
man Scott Shires placed 9th to direct the Jeffs to
2nd place team medals. Hampered by injuries late
in the season, Thomas Jefferson after defeating Doug-
las Freeman for the first time ever, won the 4th
place berth in the Central Regional Championships to
qualify a full team to the State Meet. Selected to the
All-Capitol District Team were Robert Badenoch,
Reaves Louthan and Harry Bear. In spite of injuries
to two of these limners, the Jeffs improved on last
year’s finish by taking 13th place in the Group I A
State Championships.

ELECTRICITY:
MUSCLE OF INDUSTRY
Behind the great industrial might of
America stands a “giant workman” —
electric energy. It would require the
muscle energy of 70 men working 40
hours a week for one whole year to
equal 10,000 kilowatt hours of elec-
tricity — less than the average annual
consumption of two Vepco residential
customers. Yes, electricity is the “mus-
cle” behind our power and prosperity.

For all (be people the computer puts
out of jobs, it can put more people
into new ones.
Jobs that right now go begging
simply because the men and women
with the brains for computer pro-
gramming don't bother to get the
training.
h's an awful waste, since chances
are most high school graduates have
the brains already. If you think
you’re one of them, you can prove it
by passing ECPI’s free aptitude test.
Then you can get the training
from ECPI. (There are over 70
ECPI training centers,so one should
be near you.)
We have the latest IBM comput-
ers for you to learn on. We have the
textbooks for you to learn from. We
have a faculty of tough professionals
to make sure sou do the learning.
It won t be easy, h won’t be cheap.
And sou won’t get your diploma
just because you’ve paid your tui-
tion and sat through the classes.
But when you do graduate, you’ll
be a qualified computer program-
mer. You’ll be ready to start work-
ing in a field that pays experienced
programmers double or triple what
you may be earning now.
If that’s not enough, remember
that the one person who can’t be re-
placed by a computer is the person
who runs one.

Acknowledgment
As the school year 1966-67 draws to a close, the combined yearbook staffs wish to ex-
press gratitude to those whose efforts helped to produce the highlights of this year. We
acknowledge our appreciation to the following:
Mr. William W. Brock, Jr., our principal, for his interest and support in
the preparation of this book.
The faculty, for its cooperation in allowing our photographers to come in
to photograph activities.
The students who willingly became the photographic subjects.
The PTA ladies who helped so much during the photographing of the un-
derclassmen.
The staff photographers who gave their time during and after school in
order to tell the picture story of the year.
Mr. Lester Peterson and Mr. Danny Defalco, the Taylor representatives
who gave us much technical advice and who came when we called for help.
Miss Alma Lowance and Mrs. Neda Tucker, literary and business advisers,
for their guidance, patience and constructive criticisms.

The year 1967 has become history. Students are drawn away by
summer vacation, but there is another year. In September our story
will begin anew.
