Here comes a parade! Central High‘^^xc/' C
ol is on parade. £
There are no onlookers in this parade.
Everyone is a participant. Each teacher leads
his "band" of students through the crowded
streets. Through these streets of Learning
and Knowledge, march the triumphant stu-
dents. Another year closer to their goal. This
isza four-year parade.
Waving their blue and white banners
and singing their school song, the upper class-
men and lower classmen alike, are one in
irit, truth, and loyalty to "dear Central
High . .
There are approximately 1600 people in
this long parade. But soon 312 of them will
turn from the "band" and march into the
street of the Future. Confronting them is all
the anticipation, bewilderment and aspiration
associated with innovation—a new life, a new
parade in life.
They are leaving behind their fellow stu-
dents and marching away. Some may fall out
of step, and some may change their course.
But the parade will still go on, and new
"bands" will take the place of the old.
Yes, the students of Central's parade
will keep marching, marching, marching from
today into tomorrow; from Central into the

"Reading and traveling are much alike; both
take us to distant places." In English Literature,
seniors find these words to be very true. They

Time barriers are non-existent in reading. English

The great dramas are studied in English

ahead.
When will we receive our Wakitan? What
color will they be? Towards the end of the year,
rumors concerning these questions float around
Central. Finally the day comes and the books are
distributed.
The Wakitan staff has worked long and hard
on the history book of the school year. Under the
supervision of Mr. Dowell and editors, Sharon
Beatley, Dana McClanahan, and Carla Schroeder,
a collection of memories is assembled.
The organization is drawn up once, twice,
and then changed again. Pages are arranged on
layout mats. Photographs are scheduled. An-
nouncements are prepared for the P.A. system.
Photographs are taken. Copy is written and re-

are prepared. The last of the money is collected.
Worry and more worry, will we meet our deadline?
During the last days of February, the last pages
are sent to the publisher.
May arrives and so do the Wakitans. The
time is here. Everyone hurries about collecting
autographs in his book. Now the questions have
been answered.
Another year has ended, but for the Wakitan
staff the time spent on the book has been worth
the while.

lation for these questions is "How ore you?" These
are the phrases used by the nearly fluent students
of the French, Latin, Spanish, and German
classes.
Miss Marechai, the Spanish teacher, brings
to her classes the study of the customs and back-
ground of the Spanish countries. She further
extends their understanding of Spanish through
conjugations, vocabulary, and writing.
Mrs. Wagner teaches the newest addition

The Classical To The Modern
Veni, Vidi, Vici ... I came, I saw, I con-
quered. Just as it was Caesar's motto, this could
be the motto of the first, second, and third year
Latin classes.
Veni . . . first year ... I came with hesitancy,
interest, confusion. This year brought the Latin
Banquet, the fundamentals, the vocabulary to
memorize, and the muddled mass of constructions.
Vidi . . . second year ... I saw with clarity,
reason, and familiarity the ancient Romans and
their language. This brought mythology, Julius
Caesar, and a study of Roman life.
Vici . . . third year ... I conquered nouns,
verbs, tenses, constructions. With this year came
the job of supervising the Latin Banquet, studies
of classical works; consequently, a fuller under-
standing of Latin.

Social Science Reviews World Affairs
President Kennedy, Nikita Khrushchev, and
De Gaulle tried to untangle the Berlin crisis. The
situation in Laos became worse. The United
States sent its first man into space. These were
headlines which predominated the discussion of
our social science classes in the past year.
The seniors took courses in International
Relations and Government taught by Miss Ruth
Spangberg and Mr. Milton Day. The history of
the United States was related to the juniors by
Miss Hester DeNeen and Mr. Arthur Burrowes.
The sophomores studied World History while the
freshmen found their way through Civics and
Ancient History.
In the Psychology and Sociology classes the
juniors and seniors investigated the motives of
individuals and the actions of people living to-
gether. The Economics classes contemplated the
value of the American dollar and its effect on
the United States today.
In each class, the Social Science studies
placed emphasis on old and new situations re-
sounding cause, effect and result.

Math, The Basis Of All
"Mathematics is the basis of all learning."
It is needed everywhere from the simple problems
of everyday life to the complex equations of a
scientist. Under the supervision of Miss Vera Til-
son, the Department of Mathematics offers
courses to satisfy the needs of all students.
A full four years of mathematics may be
acquired at Central. General math, Algebra I,
geometry, Algebra II, trigonometry and math
analysis are the courses offered in the Math De-
partment.
A national mathematics club, Mu Alpha
Theta, is represented at Central by fourteen mem-
bers. Sponsored by Mr. Oscar Kirschner, the mem-
bers meet twice monthly to discuss the principles
of mathematics.
Therefore, ranging from the less intensive
to the complex, a student at Central may acquire
education in mathematics to any degree.

Diane Enos and fellow art students try their hand at abstract
drawing.
Art is indeed a varied subject with un-
limited horizons. The art and art crafts classes
have crossed several of these horizons this
year under the direction of Miss Lundgren and
Mr. Swyhart.
One need only study art a short while to
realize that there is much more to it than
drawing pictures. A thorough study of earlier
and contemporary artists gives a student a
good basis for understanding and appreciating
art. Work in tempera, sketching, silkscreening,
mosaics, and leathercraft add variety and make
art one of the most interesting subjects taught.
Field trips, sketching assignments, and obser-
vation are all important means of putting
knowledge of art to work.
The world of art is truly one of magnifi-
cence and mystery, and is just waiting for you.

Efficiency And
"We want efficiency and we want speed,"
say today's businessmen. Every girl and boy who
takes a commerce course at Central must try for
perfection in these two aspects. The student must
also work diligently to gain accuracy and know-
ledge in these courses.
Under the direction of Mr. Linus Dowell,
the Department of Commerce offers the student
experience in the use of many different types of
equipment — typewriters, mimeograph machines,
dictating machines, adding machines, and other
various types of business machines.
In typing classes a student learns accu-

Future Homemakers
The way to a man's heart is through his
stomach. So, boys, watch out! Learning to cook
well has been one of the main goals this year of
the Home Economics classes taught by Mrs. Lem-
mon and Mrs. Wagner.
But cooking is not all that Central squaws
learn in home economics. The girls study sewing
and child care. Instruction in the selection and
harmonization of colors and furniture prepare
them for decorating their own homes. Etiquette
and good taste are also emphasized.
The course in home economics is designed
to create well-informed and versatile home-
makers of tomorrow.
Home economics provides young girls the opportunity to
learn the art of cooking.

C.O.E. Students Prepare For Business World
The business world of today has grown into
a vast competitive system of free enterprise. The
student at Central is given an opportunity to pre-
pare for the competition which prevails in busi-
ness. Under the Cooperative Occupational Educa-
tion (C.O.E.) program carried out at Central and
supervised by Mr. Ralph Wilkinson, the student
receives this preparation.
Approximately twenty-two boys attending
Hillyards Vocation School learn about mechanics,
printing, and radio and television repair. The
boys learn by actually working with these differ-
ent articles.
The entire C.O.E. program serves as a train-
ing place in which the future members of the
business world are taught essential skills.

Mechanical drawing has become a very ad-

takes in all phases of mechanical drawing.
A handiman, a mechanical engineer, or any

who has the training.

"Exclusive." The National Honor Society is
one of the most "exclusive" organizations in
Central High School.
The prospective members are chosen from
the upper 1/5 of the junior class and the upper
1/4 of the senior class.
Then from these students, the faculty and
the NHS members vote on those students accord-
ing to the four qualities of scholarship, character,
leadership, and service.
The new members are "tapped" in the
spring on NHS Tap Day. In an assembly devoted
entirely to the National Honor Society, the mem-
bers are officially initiated.
Respect and honor are rewards which ac-
company membership in this organization. These
students are proud to say, "I am a member of
the National Honor Society."

Towards Winning
Ed Hommerli
Dennis Harner
In the autumn Central's muscle men began
preparation for football. They practiced long and
tiring hours and the work was rewarding. This
year Central produced a winning Tribe. The Tribe
finished with a season record of 6 wins, 2 losses,
and one tie.
The Jamboree launched the football season for
all St. Joseph high schools. Later, the Indians
played a deadlock game with Shawnee Mission
North and went on to win the next five games
with Christian Brothers, Atchison, Lafayette, Rose-
dale, and Benton. A setback followed with losses
to William Chrisman and North Kansas City. The
Tribe reasserted its strength and ability by ending
the season with a win over Van Horn.
A winning season has its rewards. Four boys,
Craig Mannschreck, Leroy Miller, Jim Wallerstedt
and Dave Michaels made the first all city team
and Craig Mannschreck made the second all
state team.
Under the coaching of Roger Grunwald, Don
Francis, Jack Scofield, Howard Iba, Milton Day,
Gus Sarris, and Jim Blacklock, the Tribe placed
first in the city and third in the Pony Express.
Moreover, the season's games were very rewarding.

Even Game Split
Cooch Iba gives the team instructions during o time out.
For the Central Indians the 1961-62 basketball
season was an even game season. Central finished
the season with 8 wins and 8 losses. Every year
there are many ball games comprising a long and
hard schedule. A round-robin schedule with each
of the city schools decides the city championship.
The outstanding feature of the season was the
fight for the City League title. A three way tie
between Central, Christian Brothers, and Lafay-
ette ended the fight. The Indians dribbled into
second place in the Pony Express Conference.
John Lucas, Jim Wallerstedt, Eddie Miller, and
Bob Nauman were some of the outstanding play-
ers of the season.
Sportsmanship, ability, and determination to
win yielded a team to be proud of in the 1961-
1962 basketball season.

Cindermen Sprint To New Heights
No matter the height, no matter the weight,
the determination of a boy who goes out for
track is the factor which weighs the heaviest in
the results. Can you run? Can you jump? How
far can you throw a discus? These are the ques-
tions which every cinderman should ask himself.
St. Joseph Relays and the City Track Meet
are the two main events of the 1960-1961 track
season. Teams from Kansas City and neighboring
cities come to compete in the St. Joseph Relays,
while only St. Joseph high schools participate in
the City Track Meet.
The broad jump, high and low hurdles, shot
put, pole vault, the relays, the high jump, the 100,
220, and 440 yard dashes compose the main part
of the fourteen events of each track meet. In
such a wide range of events almost everybody

The varsity cheerleaders, led by Mary Mc-
Williams, have the task of promoting an enthusi-
astic pep squad.
Game time stirs up high spirits, a strong
determination to win, and loyal cheerleaders—
win or lose.
Every afternoon the empty halls ring with
the clamor of the cheerleaders. Perfection is the
goal of practice; enthusiasm the result. A cheer-
leader is a representative of Central. She is part
of Central! She is Central!

to be the largest and most outstanding athletic
organization for girls in the city.
The G.A.A. calendar of events contains many
major and minor sports. The major sports include:

Advancement of physical fitness and im-
provement of sportsmanship are the main objec-
tives of G.A.A. Awards are offered to the mem-
bers of G.A.A. based on the extent of their par-
ticipation in the various sports. An accumulation
of 1800 points gives an award of a letter. The
second is a pin earned by 2800 points. The high-
est honor received in G.A.A. is the trophy which
requires 4000 points.
The G.A.A. Board, consisting of a manager
for each sport, controls alLof the G.A.A. activi-
ties. Among these are the sponsorship of the
basketball queen coronation and sale of student
directories. The hard work and good will of the

R.O.T.C. Forms The
Atten-tion!!! Right Face!!! Pre-sent Arms!!!
Order Arms!!! Parade Rest!!! are many of num-
erous commands used by officers to direct the
ROTC cadet in his training. ROTC, Reserve Of-
ficers Training Corps, is a class to prepare boys
for military service. Offered on a mandatory basis
to sophomores and on a voluntary basis to juniors
and seniors, it has a large participation of 334
cadets.
Drill, first aid, maintenance and firing of
weapons, and basic instruction in map reading
are taught first year cadets.
Promotions are determined by ability in
leadership in the different subjects within ROTC.
Cadets with the ability may join volunteer
units which include the honor guard and the
military police. To be eligible for membership in
Central's ROTC club, Shield and Spear, a cadet
must hold the rank of SFC.
The highlights of the ROTC year are the
annual ROTC Ball, and the ROTC Review and
federal inspection. Under the auspices and train-
ing of Master Sergeant Ellsworth Sam and Wil-
liam Meredith, these various ROTC units serve
Central in some way at every school function.

Superintendent of Schools
Mr. Frank. Baker is recognized as a man of
dignity, of kind understanding and of sympathetic
helpfulness. He has exercised organizational abil-
ity in dealing with the voluminous problems which
he encounters as Central's principal.
The students and faculty alike feel no hesita-
tion in expressing their admiration for Central's
"Big Chief."
Familiar words ring in homerooms every school
day, "May I have your attention, please." This is
only one of the duties of Mr. Baker.
It is a cooperating and sincere principal that
makes quality principles a part of each student's
high school life.

STUDENT COUNCIL CABINET: Eddie Miller, Nick Hillyard, Vicki Glendenning, Judy Thomas, Robin Wilson.
The “voice" of Central's student body is
the Student Council. The opinions of the stu-
dents are presented through the representatives
who are chosen to inform the students of the
events of the school year. It is on this interchange
of opinions and information concerning school
activities that the Student Council is based.
Each semester new representatives are pre-
sented to the students on a ballot. Each repre-
sentative must maintain a grade average of “M"
to remain in the Student Council. The Council
meets every two weeks on alternating periods.
Reports are given in homerooms the following
day.
Nominations, campaigns, primaries, and fin-
ally the election, are events which lead to the
selection of the officers and cabinet of Central's
Student Council. Under the sponsorship of Mr.
Lawrence Hayes, the Council guides such events
as the Christmas dance, sock hops, color day,
homecoming, and the all-school dance. The Coun-
cil supervises the school ground clean-up and
assemblies.
With our ever growing population of stu-
dents, the Council tries to maintain the demo-
cratic spirit of Central.

Art Marolis selects a novel from the vast number of
books in Central's library.
Books, books everywhere and so little time
to read. The Central High School Library is one
of the nicest high school libraries in the city.
Its vast number of books is there for your
exploration. Encyclopedias, books, magazines, and
newspapers are a few sources of information
available to all students. By making use of the
Reader's Guide, a student can quickly find the
information on the subject he wishes.
The librarian, Miss Lois McClanahan, aids
students in assembling materials for research
and reading. A large staff of girls perform the
various functions of the library. From the library
doors of Central High marches a vast parade of
knowledge.

Freshman Class Officers
Can it be true . . . I've made it. A freshman
might be heard exclaiming as he entered the long
huge halls of Central High for the first time . . .
"a triumph of hope over experience/' perfectly
describes the feeling of the new freshman. Now
studies begin. Civics, English, General Business,
Algebra I, "One enemy is too much!"
Pep assemblies, crowded halls, exciting foot-
ball games, fatigue . . . "Friday is come and the
week is gone." Then comes the day, anxiety,
cramming, just the underdogs until next year.
Now you can hear him saying with admiration,
looking up to a Senior, "Just think! Three more
years."

With one year finished, the sophomores meet
the halls of Central High once more. Not so un-
sure . . . not so uneasy . . . continuing the ad-
vance toward a better future. Biology, geometry,
World History, typing . . . Everyone is studying
harder this year.
Pep squad, Hi-Y, Y-Teens, student council
. . . numerous clubs to join. More responsibilities,
more work, more excitement. These are the
new events, new teachers, new thoughts that all
face a sophomore.

Juniors ... a year filled with many exciting
events. One year filled with bubbling, vivacious
cheerleaders, a president-mascot, the high-pres-
sure salesmen of Color Day, National Merit
Exams, preparation for the prom, and finally the
prom!
The juniors explored new fields of learning,
renewing the old skills and attaining the new.
Algebra, physics, U.S. History, health, shorthand
. . . were anticipated, fought, and conquered.
Thus, the juniors exclaim confidently, "Next
year ... at last ... a senior!!!"

"Time will never deprive us of these wonder-
ful memories" is the thought of seniors as they
prepare for the long road into the future. Four
years — hard studies, exciting games, long hours.
Years have been conquered, quest started, and
glory has been great.
Senior studies — chemistry, trigonometry,
English Literature, government — all make this
year for us. School dances and other extra
activities provide anticipation, expectation. Noisy
pep-rallies show enthusiasm and the thrill of
new accomplishments. The achievement has
finally come . . . graduation! Happiness, con-
fusion, tears . . . Our Senior Year!
