Worked freshmen, uncertain and hesi-

thusiasm and spirit to grasp an active
part in school life. Friendly sopho-
mores, with an added air of confidence
gained during summer months, readily
emerge upon the scene as they move
one step closer to an "upperclassman"
title. Hurried juniors, quick and ready
co begin a new year, are beckoned by
experience, and very soon realize that
work . . . work ... is the price of
responsibility. And exuberant seniors,
finding they have almost reached the
summit, begin to make their last ef-
forts their best. Here is a student
body whose ultimate goal is to pre-

Social Science Reviews World Events
"Cold war," "peaceful co-exist-
ence," "Adenauer," and "Laos"
are the symbolic words describing
the condition of the globe in the
year 1960-1961.
Social science students and their
teachers delve into study of the
Congo. They discuss Algeria. They
debate on Red China's status at
the U. N. They argue about Ken-
nedy and Nixon.
In these crises-ridden years, social
relationships, from personal and in-
ter-personal to national and inter-
national, are studied in one or
another of the twelve different
courses offered by the Department
of Social Studies, which is headed
by Miss Hester DeNeen.
International relations, designed
to give a greater insight into inter-
national problems and their rela-
tionship to the United States, was
added to the social science curric-
ula this year. Senior students
have found this to be invaluable.
While the seniors are traversing
the kingdoms of Europe, Asia, and
South America and unraveling the
intricacies of government, under-
classmen are developing their
knowledge of the U. S. Freshmen
take civics. Juniors study Ameri-
can History. Sophomores, however,
are attempting to link the past with
the future in ancient history.
Sponsored by Miss Ruth Spang-
berg and Mr. Arthur Burrowes, the
members of the Forum Club placed
special emphasis on the Presiden-
tial campaign and held debates on
world trouble spots.
In every class, the Department of
Social Science emphasizes world
situations to a new generation of
world citizens.

Language Arts Span Syntax To Caesar
Romon slaves John Bloom, Mike Grooms, Barent Spring-
sted, ond Paul Sparks carry in the roasted pig during the
1959 Roman Banquet. They ore just a few of the many
slaves who waited on the Romon citizens, portrayed by
Lotin students. Former Latin teacher, Mrs. Willmoth, and
her five classes, planned oil the food, decorations, ond en-
tertainment.
Emerson, Markham, Shakespeare, Pope,
Thoreau, Lewis, Sandburg, Milton . . .
The names of literature read like sym-
phonies. The list contains the great and the
almost great. These are the names of England
when it ruled the seas, of America when it was
thirteen colonies in size. These are the men of
Walden Pond or Waterloo or Chicago. These
are the men of literature, the men who shaped
the centuries.
Central students are, therefore, very fortu-
nate in having a Department of Language Arts
in which they can learn not only the rules of
grammar, but also the principles and ideals of
the great writers of literature and history, whether
their writings be in English, Latin, French, or
Spanish.
Under the direction of Mrs. Veva Tomlinson,
the Department of Language Arts strives to de-
velop both accuracy and facility in the student's
own communication and to teach him how to
interpret the words of others.
The freshman student studies grammar, vo-
cabulary, spelling, composition, and the works
of such men as Jesse Stuart and James Thurber.
The sophomore undergoes a period of more train-
ing in grammar ond related skills while he delves
into A Tale of Two Cities, Julius Caesar, poetry,
and short stories. He may also be in his second
year of a foreign language. The junior, now
at the turning point, increases his vocabulary.
He works on deeper interpretation and more com-
plicated compositions. Under the directed read-
ing plan, he continues to widen his vision with
such works as Lewis's Main Street or Mitchell's
Gone With the Wind. He comes to appreciate
his heritage of American literature. Finally, the
senior, able to choose a course in the Language
Arts, tries his hand at drama, speech, English
literature, Senior English, or journalism. He be-
comes familiar with the principles of speech or
the laws of the theatre. In English literature,
the great panorama of literature ranging from
"Beowulf" through Shakespeare to the Moderns
is spread before him. In Senior English, the
student concentrates on modern literature, on
increasing composition skills, on increasing his
word power. The journalism student, under the
sponsorship of Mrs. Florence McCoy spends a
semester learning the principles of newswriting
and a semester in "putting out" the school paper.
Thus, it is in the English Department that
the students, through reading programs, literary
study, grammar, and composition, are challenged
to expand their knowledge of man and his
communication.

anticipation mounts, and finally the day arrives
when every student who reserved one receives
his copy.
Serving as a bound volume of the year's
activities, the Wakitan requires and receives full
student and faculty support. Sponsored by Mr.
Linus Dowell and edited by Paula Evans, Mae-
Sharon Soferstein, and Betty Kirbey, the yearbook
begins to take shape during the summer months

Then comes the long-awaited day, which the
Wakitan staff, the administration, the faculty,
and the entire student body have anticipated.
This is the day of crowds in the halls, of students
sitting on the floor, of writer's cramp from signing
autographs, of empty boxes which held books,
of laughs, and fun, and sighs. Another Wakitan

Sciences Developed
In Twentieth Century
During the year of 1960-61 "Cape Cana-
veral" has become a by-word in America's
newspapers, communication centers, homes,
and schools. It has become America's symbol
of defensive strength, strength which might
someday become unbalanced and tip to the
right or to the left of the scales. Thus it
is that the Deportment of Science, under the
direction of Mr. Lecil Carroll, must place
great emphasis on the student's mastery of
the strict developement of the laws of science.
Twenty science classes are taught during
each school day by five teachers. Enrolled in
science classes are five hundred and eighty-
four students.
Freshmen study general science, thereby
receiving an overall view of the scientific
field. Sophomores come to know the nature
of plant and animal life in biology classes.
Juniors put to use the Law of Matter in
physics, or study the body make-up in health.
Seniors experiment in the chemistry labo-
ratory.
Each year, as the science student pro-
gresses, the scales become harder and harder
to balance. Courses become harder, just
as each year at Cape Canaveral the scales
are closely watched and each year they be-
come harder and harder to balance.

ment of Mathematics. This department offers
courses to fill the needs of any student at Central.
For those truly interested in mathematics,
a rigorous program is planned. In four years a
student can master four semesters of Algebra,
two of plane geometry, one of trigonometry, and
one of mathematical analysis.
Mathematical analysis, the newest course
offered by the department, is a college pre-
paratory class containing elements of solid
geometry, statistics, analytical geometry, and cal-
culus. Less intensive courses in general mathe-
matics are also offered.
The Deportment of Mathematics is repre-
sented scholastically by the Math Club, an organi-
zation dedicated to further study of the principles
of facts and figures.
Jim Fitzsimmons laboriously studies his sines ond
co-sines in trigonometry.

Commerce Courses Train Future Executives
Linus E. Dowell
B.S.
The clatter of machines, the ringing of bells,
the quick, furious strokes of the fingers, the bent
bodies of frowning students ... A stranger entering
the south door at Central would hear and see these
things, for here in rooms 103, 104, and 107 are
commerce students working diligently to gain speed
and accuracy in whatever they are doing.
Under the direction of Mr. Linus Dowell, the
Department of Commerce is equipped with eighty
typewriters, two mimeograph machines, ten other
machines, and various other materials. Altogether
the total value of these materials is between fifteen
and twenty thousand dollars.
Students enrolled in typing classes begin with
basic rudiments of typing, and progress to the writing
of business letters and other business forms. For
accuracy in spelling and composition, students study
business English. Bookkeeping students are taught
to keep accurate and neat financial records. Oddly
shaped lines and speed are tools with which shorthand
students work. Basic business practices are demon-
strated in general business, while business math poses
the problems the student will meet in the business
world. Business machines are maintained so that
commerce students may learn first-hand the workings
of a mimeograph or adding machine. Typing, dupli-
cating, program making, and record-keeping services
are provided by this department for the entire school.
The Department of Commerce offers its students
practical knowledge which will prepare them to meet

Hammers echo through the halls. Sandpaper
seesaws its way into wood. Sparks fly. White
hot metal hisses. The students in Central's
Deportment of Industrial Arts might almost be
working to the rhythmic lines of Sandburg's
"Prayers of Steel":
Lay me on an anvil, 0 God.
Beat me and hammer me into a crowbar.
Woodshop, metal shop, and mechanical
drawing comprise the curriculum of the Depart-
ment of Industrial Arts, which is located in "the
village." Under the direction of Mr. Roger
Fisher, students in this department are encouraged
to develop their skills and creativity by use of
hammer and wood, blow torch and metal.
Each year the students in woodshop and
metal shop create coffee tables, bed frames,
lamps, and troys from their own plans. Students
in metal shop first learn the principles of working
with metals and then apply these principles in
making articles to be displayed with those of
woodshop students. Advanced drawing students
plan model houses and solve the numerous prob-
lems that the construction poses. Beginning
students in mechanical drawing concentrate on
sketching, letter, and orthographic projection.
Under the sponsorship of Mr. Roger Fisher,
the department has formed a new club known
os the Brace and Bit Club. Club members hope
to deal with scale models and increase manual
skills. Central is indebted to this department
for the unique wall decorations in the newly re-
modeled cafeteria. Each student engaged in the
work of the Department of Industrial Arts gains
knowledge which will serve as a source of satis-
faction in future years, whether his satisfaction
lies in building a house, making a lamp, or

"On-The-Spot” Training
Ralph Wilkinson
M.A.
The words "Mr. Wilkinson would like to see
any boy interested in . . ." are familiar to Central
students via the PA system. Under the Co-Opera-
tive Occupational Education (COE) Program car-
ried out at Central and supervised by Mr. Ralph
Wilkinson, students receive job-training and are
placed in business and industry.
Discussion centers about the finding and
maintaining of a business position, the attitude
of the employee and employer, and the importance
of neat appearance.
With the help of Mr. Wilkinson, the students
seek jobs of their own, jobs for which they will
be best suited, and will therefore enjoy. This is
"on-the-job training."
Approximately twenty-nine boys attending
the Hillyards Vocational school learn firsthand
about mechanics, printing, and radio and tele-
vision repair. Old cars, radios, and television sets
are "textbooks" from which the students learn.
The whole COE program serves as a training
ground in which future members of the business
world are taught marketable skills.

classroom. This is a delightful atmosphere for
young women learning the arts of homemaking.
In addition to learning the fine points of
cooking and sewing, the home economics students
are instructed in baby care, good grooming,
personality development, interior decoration, and
home care.
Under the able guidance of Mrs. Frances
Lemmon, home economics instructor, these stu-

and useful living in the career of homemaking.
In a classroom newly remodeled and enlarged, the
students grow skilled in homemaking arts. Two

Concert Choir Performs
"Some enchanted evening . . ." Melodious words such as
these ring forth each day as Marvin Gench, Jr. rehearses Central's
Concert Choir for its many performances. The Department of
Music at Central, under the direction of Mr. Marvin Gench, Jr.,
is perhaps one of the best in Missouri.
Beginning music students are members of a freshman chorus
directed by Mr. Byron Myers. Freshmen who qualify become
members during their sophomore year of either Mixed Choir or
Girls' Glee Club. The Concert Choir, composed of sophomores,
juniors, and seniors, is the goal of every music student. The
greatest honor which a student of music at Central may achieve
is to be chosen for Mr. Gench's Inner Choir, whose members must

The list of projects which the Student Council un-

student body officers, the five cabinet members, and fifty-
six representatives, this school organization affects the
life of every student and faculty member at Central. The

Under the sponsorship of Mr. Lawrence Hayes, the
Student Council is responsible for the development of
democracy in Central's student population of 1481. Bal-
loting for Council representatives is conducted in ballot
booths placed in the halls. New representatives are
elected each semester. Lively campaigns for Student
Council officers are carried out each spring. To climax
it all, the newly-elected President names his Cabinet.
Annually the Student Council holds a Student Council
Banquet and a picnic for its members. Believing that
scholarship comes first, the Student Council requires its
members to maintain an "M" average.
Thus the Student Council, ever aware that it repre-
sents 1481 individual students, strives to maintain the
democratic spirit at Central.

Under the direction of Miss Lois McClan-

from 16,000 to 17,000 books and 60 separate
magazine titles each year. Add to this the tasks
of repairing, shelf-reading, shelving, and order-

Benton's Eleven cast a jinx on the victory-laden
Indians after the Tribe had tucked five scalps
under their belt. The scrappy south-side team
squeezed by Central giving the Blue and White
the taste of defeat the Cardinals had so often
witnessed at the hands of Central's varsity. Be-
fore the game, the Indians had rolled overVan
Horn, Christian Brothers, Atchison, Lafayette,
and Rosedale. Larry Howard, Dave Michaels,
Jim Bowers, Steve Nikes, Mike Wiehl, and Don
Derington spearheaded the Central offensive.
The defensive crew included Craig Mannschreck,
Dennis Brown, Bruce Taylor, Rocky Maugh, Mike
Henderson, Charles Houser, Bill Alson, and Keith
Brown. Beginning with Benton's win, the Indians
dropped succeeding games to William Chrisman,
North Kansas City, and Shawnee Mission. Cen-
tral finished fourth in the Pony Express Confer-
ence and second in City League Play. Three
boys, Craig Mannschreck, Rocky Maugh, and
Dennis Brown made the all-city team and the
all-conference team. Bruce Taylor also made
all-conference. Craig Mannschreck and Denny
Brown were placed on the All-district's second

Northsiders 29-0
Jim Bowers bulls his way down the field with on Eagle tackler
on his bock. Mike Henderson tries to come to his teammate's
rescue.
With three wins chalked up, the Central Eleven
steamed over Lafayette's Shamrocks. With a
water-tight defense, and lightning offense, the
Indians won 29 - 0. The Blue and White, getting
into trouble early, fumbled on the opening kick-
off with the Irish recovering on our thirty-eight
yard line. Only one foot from paydirt, the North-
end team fumbled, losing the ball. The Indians
again marched to the thirty-seven only to fumble
once more, but on the next play, Lafayette took
turn about. Taking to the warpath, the Tribe,
with Larry Howard going over for the first TD
and Jim Bowers for the extra point, shot ahead.
Towering Dennis Brown jumped above several
Shamrock players in the end zone and picked
a pass out of the air for our next six points.
Nikes ran the extra point. In the third period,
Bowers ran forty-nine yards to make the score
29 - 0, and Nikes connected with Dave Michaels
for the extra point. Dennis Bonner crossed the
goal line for the final TD. Final score: 29-0,
due to a safety against the not-so-sharp Irish.

Conference Tie
Dennis Brown, Steve Nikes, and John Lucas
provided a three-pronged scoring punch that
proved fatal to the city league teams. Winning
six games out of six, the Indian varsity once
again picked off the City League Title. In ad-
dition the Central quintet tied William Chrisman
for first position in the Pony Express Conference,
both teams racking up a 6-2 record in the
conference.
Knocking off Trenton and taking third
place in the regional, the Indians compiled a
season record of 15-6. Dennis Brown, high
scorer on the team, racked up an 18 point league
average.
Mike Wiehl, Jim Wallerstedt, Dave Mi-
chaels, and Ed Miller were other major play-
makers on the hardwood. Providing depth on
the bench were John Anderson, Larry Knox, and
Kirk Waite.

Tribe Beats
Northtown 72-54
You are there !
Along with 150 other Centralites, you have
journeyed to foreign soil — the North Kansas
City High School auditorium.
The opening tip off . . . two points for the
St. Joe five . . . another bucket, this time for
the NKC team ... A loud buzzer and the
first quarter is finished with both teams scoring
13 points.
With two minutes left in the second period,
the see-saw clash is broken up by successive goals
of Dennis Brown and Jim Wallerstedt. The half-
time gun stops the scoring at 31 - 26 in Central's
favor.
As play resumes in the third quarter Cen-
tral starts a torrid pace, hitting eight of nine
shots. The final bang finds the Tribe on top
71 -54, with the Indian quintet firing in 59 per
cent from the field and 70.6 from the charity
line.
Four of the Central varsity scored in the
double figures, with Dennis Brown scoring 19;
Nikes, 20; Wallerstedt, 19; Michaels, 10.
Steve Nikes dribbles down the court while teommate
Dennis Brown rushes in to back him.

Challenges Ring Forth
Leading yells for Central's Varsity ore head cheer-
leaders Mary Meier ond Tona Cresop.
It's 11:40 a.m. on Friday, the end of a
long, tiring week. Then you hear the strains of
"When those saints ..." coming faintly from
the Pep Band's warm up. The bell rings. This
is it — Friday's pep assembly.
The Varsity cheerleaders are on the stage
yelling "BLUE-WHITE." In the balcony, the
Reserve cheerleaders echo "BLUE-WHITE."
You remember the summer hours the cheer-
leaders spent practicing on the football field, the
hours they worked after school in the halls per-
fecting yells, the season's full schedule during
which they never missed a game. Finally you
think of the big game Saturday. You're going
after the Pony Express Conference crown . . .
90
Reserve cheerleoders for 1960-61 are Christine Clark, Cookie Linnewch, Vicki Cresop, Judy Thomas, Gail Turner,
and Mary McWilliams.
With "V-l-C-T-O-R-Y”
Leading yells for Central's Reserve is head cheer-
leader Mary McWilliams, junior.
You're at the auditorium. It's the open-
ing jump and the cheerleaders are chanting,
"Beat, beat, beat those Cardinals." — It's over.
The whole student body rises as one, caught in
the sweeping emotion of a championship score,
37- 36.
The cheerleaders are tired, hot, excited,
loyal. It's not over for them until they've made
the rafters ring with "V-l-C-T-O-R-Y."
. . . And it's their victory tonight as it
has been at every game. Win or lose, the cheer-
leaders are with us.
Sometimes they ore screaming, excited; sometimes they are bored, waiting; sometimes they cry, bitter . . .
Pep Squad Supports The Team,
Excited members ot the pep squad rise to their feet during the game for
the City-League Title in football. Central lost in the last minutes of play.
92
Whotever they do, wherever they go; win or lose, teors of defeat, or cries of victory — they are all for Central.
Win Or Lose
Always before a capacity crowd, the football team is backed by the pep
squad, the cheerleaders, the student. body, and the alumnae.

GAA Supports Girl Athletes
A sport for every girl at every time of the
year — that is the ultimate aim of the Girls'
Athletic Association. Under the sponsorship of
Mrs. Gladys Baker, this organization has develop-
ed into one of the largest and best known organ-
izations in the city.
On the 1960-61 calendar of events are the
five outdoor sports of baseball, archery, tennis,
horseshoe, and soccer. For those girls preferring
indoor sports, six are offered: basketball, badmin-
ton, ping-pong, volleyball, and bowling.
Whether a girl participates in outdoor or
indoor sports, individual or team sports, she
learns the true meaning of sportsmanship, and
for the extent of her participation, GAA offers
three awards. The first award is a letter requir-
ing 1800 points. The second is a pin earned by
2800 points, and the highest award is a trophy
for amassing 4000 points. While girls receive
their letters and pins in their sophomore and
junior years, it requires four years to receive a
trophy.
Not only do these same girls labor long
hours in competitive and non-competitive sports,
but they also sponsor the student directory and
the basketball queen coronation. The tireless
efforts of the GAA made the 1960-61 corona-
tion a success that will long serve as a lasting
tribute to Mrs. Baker and her girls.

Physical Education Leads To Fun In Sports
First semester freshman and sophomore girls
enrolled in physical education to participate in
a rigorous sports program. Receiving a half unit
credit for each year's work, their goal is to de-
velop strong minds in healthy bodies. Basketball,
volleyball, badminton, and bombardment a r e
stressed during the winter months. As rules of
each game must be heeded, sportsmanship thus
grows accordingly in each individual. Inter-class
and intra-class class competition is urged.
Forced by building improvements and con-
struction to vacate the gym second semester,
Mrs. Gladys Baker moved her students to the
auditorium. Here the trampoline and the ping
pong tables were set up. Girls often jumped
rope or rode a pogo stick up and down the aisles
The classes engaged in soccer and baseball with
the coming of spring. Thus the gym classes
became normal again teaching each freshman
and sophomore girl the rules of sportsmanship
and the fun of every sport.
Mary Vollintine springs lightly into the air while
practicing on the trampoline.
Janice Reno and Shelia Levin practice the techniques of becoming expert ping pong
players during their morning gym class that is being held in the auditorium.

R O T C Boys At Central Number 220
In today's troubled world, the United States
must maintain an adequate defense system to
survive. Much of this defense system depends
upon the quality of men who enter the armed
forces. To help prepare boys for military service,
ROTC is offered on a mandatory basis to sopho-
mores and on a voluntary basis to juniors and
seniors.
First year cadets are given basic instruction
in map reading, first aid, drill, and maintenance
and firing of weapons. All cadets learn self-dis-
cipline and precision. Grade competition for
promotions has been keen among the 220 cadets
this year.
Volunteer units, which cadets with ability
may join, include the honor guard and the mili-
tary police. Cadets holding the rank of SFC or
higher are eligible for membership in the Shield
and Spear, Central's ROTC club.
The ROTC year is highlighted by the an-
nual ROTC Boll, the ROTC Review, and the im-
portant federal inspection. Cadets this year
sponsored a noon hour dance hall. Central's
ROTC units, under the direction of M/Sgt.
Thomas H. Earhart and SFC William D. Meredith,
are called upon to serve in some way at every
school function. We salute them !

Centrol's newly acquired principal, Mr. Frank C. Baker, assumes control of the many
student-teacher problems arising from construction work, and the crowded conditions.
Frank Baker Serves First
Central's beloved Mrs. Walton receives from Mr.
Baker many instructions concerning finances.
New to Central, but not new to the Admin-
istrative Staff of the St. Joseph Public Schools,
is Mr. Frank C. Baker, named to the principal-
ship of Central in August of 1960. With in-
creased staff, an exploding student population,
construction problems, and routine administra-
tive duties, Mr. Baker's job is not an easy one.
Recognized as a man of dignity, of kind
understanding, and of sympathetic helpfulness,
Mr. Baker deals with student-faculty situations
arising from crowded conditions, construction,
and the longer school day. Students and faculty
alike respect his sense of fair play, his organiza-
tional ability, his keen insight into the multitu-
dinous problems of administration in a vast high
school. With a firm finger on Central's pulse,
Mr. Fank C. Baker has quietly but unmistakably
assumed his place in the tradition of fine Cen-
tral administrators.
108
Steel and bricks slowly but surely built up the new addition which will add twenty-one
extra rooms to Central. It will also allow 600 more students than the present 1481.
Year As Central’s
Principal
Not only does Central's new prin-
cipal deal with the problems of curric-
ulum and administration, but he also
supervises the construction of the new
addition.
Falling bricks, scattered nails, tile,
pipe, and workmen are today a part of
Central's landscape. Mounds of dirt
and piles of lumber are stacked on the
grounds. Trucks labor in with loads
of building materials — materials need-
ed for the broad windows, the wide halls,
the twenty-one new class rooms, the
larger gym, and the larger locker rooms.
The new addition will allow an ex-
tra 600 students to enter Central's halls
and join the present 1481. It will create
room to expand the horizons of learn-
ing .. . Room to grow on the long blue
line . . .
Mr. Baker is frequently seen surveying the enlarged gymnasium.

Freshmen - Three More Years . . . .
Excited . . . Eager . . . Small . . . Ob-
vious ....
What was it that made the freshman stu-
dent so obvious? Contrary to popular notion,
he was neither green nor could he easily and
knowingly be tricked into buying tickets for
mythical elevators. Nevertheless, there was
something about him that made it easy to label
him "freshman."
This intangible quality might have been
his eagerness to be accepted. It might have
been many things.
Whatever it was, what would we have done
without him? Like the spokes are to the wheel,
so he was to the school. His active interest in
school activities lent itself to many committees
and clubs. His strong enthusiasm reigned over
freshman sports.
However, most of his efforts and rewards
were to be found in the classroom. It was here
that his thoughts were molded and his opinions
were formed.
"Government of the people" became mean-
ingful. General Business developed his ener-
getic mind. A-j-B=Y+Z at times strained his
uneasy nerves. A Midsummer Night's Dream
began the first of his many nights with Mr. Will
Shakespeare.
This was the freshman . . . civics, general
business, Algebra I, English. At times passive
and indifferent ... At times excited and cheer-
ing . . . But always for Central — completely.

this year's sophomore class officers, stop on the stairs
Sophomores -Two More Years . . . .
Calmer . . . Less eager . . . Bigger . . .
Louder . . . How did the sophomore apply
himself? What did he do?
Striving for perfection in the classroom,
he moved slowly forward in an environment of
theorems, diacritical marks, and Roman legends.
His choppy movements on the typewriter became
rhythmic and smooth. Continuing his Shake-
spearean interests, he studied the motives of
Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. The world
revealed by the microscope led him into a new
and exciting realm of life. He spent before-
school hours in ROTC marching the length of
the parking lot.
On the sophomore football field, he prac-
ticed survival of the fittest. If he played, then
he was good; and if he didn't play, he kept on
trying. He tried in basketball, baseball, and
track. In what few games he had, in what few
activities were open to the sophomore, he tried.
He joined in student council activities. He froze
with everyone else at football games. He had
fun.

Juniors - One More Year . . . .
Color Day . . . Election . . . Cramming
. . . The prom ... In his year of responsi-
bility, how did the junior react?
The Central junior of 1960 - 61 probably
served on at least one of the various committees
which worked efficiently to immortalize the jun-
ior-senior prom. He supported his candidate
for Student Council office. He tried to cram
for the National Merits. If one of the fortu-
nate few underclassmen on the varsity team,
perhaps he saw action. If not, he capably car-
ried the pigskin down the reserve line, or proved
himself on the court or cinder path. Whatever
the case, he worked. He worked on the Student
Council. He worked in the clubs. He worked
in the classrooms.
He gained new dimensions in U. S. History.
He rose to new heights in English, and his dis-
cussions of Shakespeare were more intelligent
after he read The Taming of the Shrew. He
began to expand his local world into the inter-
national world of news. The language of phys-
ics became a part of his vocabulary, and he
was encouraged to use deeper thought processes
in Algebra II.
Algebra II . . . History . . . Physics . . .
English . . . helped the junior to grow. The
hot courts, the muddy fields, the baseball dia-
mond prepared him for varsity — today's var-
sity. . . tomorrow's varsity . . . And the small
varsity of life.
One more year ....

mittees on the junior-senior prom, junior class officers Vicki

Senior closs officers Potty Conrod, Janie Nelson, Jeralee
Deatherage, and Jim Summers, as senior closs delegates
leave the school parking lot in search of a possible senior
closs gift for 1960-61.
Seniors - This Is It
Four years . . . Such a brief space of time
. . . and then he was a senior with pressing
questions. Where to go to college? What to
do? What to be?
These questions haunted the senior while
he casually strolled through the halls, while he
sat quietly during assemblies, while he puzzled
over trig and government. He worried about
his speech, or his chemistry, or Macbeth. If he
were on the Outlook, staff, he rushed from one
end of the building to the other, somehow man-
aging to maintain an air of seniority.
Then, too, he might have had brief moments
of glory when he became a merit finalist, or
played on the varsity, or sang in Concert Choir.
Many were the nights he spent to learn the
exact technique of a chorus line ballet, and never
will he forget the stage nerves acquired when the
curtain opened on "Dateline, '61."
Thus, after Hamlet had sought his revenge;
after sodium chloride had been made; after every
x = cos = (sin 160° - 0) (2rs)
TAN 0 had been
solved; after every sentence had been analyzed
and every book report, science project, and term
paper completed, he found graduation upon him.
He sat for his senior pictures, ordered his an-
nouncements, was measured for his cap and
gown, and he prepared to leave.
