IN MEMORIAM
We, the Seniors, dedicate this annual in the loving memory of John Vangas, Jr., who
passed away January 4, 1957.
He was very active in basketball, football, track, baseball, and FFA. He also held
the following class offices: secretary in the freshman year; president in the sophomore
year; and vice-president in the junior year. In FFA, he was elected president in the
sophomore year and student advisor in the junior year. John also represented his class
as a homecoming attendant his freshman and junior years.
He will long be remembered by his classmates. It has been said, "If there is a basket
ball team in heaven, he’d be on it."

The date is July 1, 1988, exactly thirty years after graduation. The place is
Witten, Germany. Last minute packing and preparations are being taken care of
by Chancellor Manfred Detaille. He has been invited to come to America for a
visit by President Larry Beam. With everything taken care of, Chancellor Detaille
goes into his back yard and enters his own private guided missile. Within fifteen
minutes after take-off he is being greeted at the National Rocketport in Washington
D.C. by President Beam, Vice-President Denlinger, Secretary Miss Vogue, and
Treasurer Mrs. Robbins (the former Miss Schleiger).
The executive welcoming committee takes Chancellor Detaille back to the White
House to freshen up after his long and tiring trip.
Later in the sitting room the five have fallen into a discussion of old times.
"What has happened to all our classmates?" asks the Chancellor.
"Well," replies Mr. Denlinger, "that is a long story. Remember Joe, the strong
Democrat of the class? He is now the Republican Govemer of Ohio. And re-
member Roger; he was always so quiet? He is now head of Auctioneers Incor-
porated."
"Oh, remember Ann Bilger! She is now associated with General Motors selling the
world's fastest hot-rods," chimes in Miss Vogue. "And Jack Tilton owns the
nation's largest suspender factory."
"1 suppose you know I appointed Ira Secretary of Agriculture," says the President.
"And Norma is President of our National Lonely Hearts Club."
"David Ehler has won the Kentucky Derby every year since he entered His jockey
career. Dale, or Little Zeke, was a lumberjack for twenty-eight years, holding the
world's record for tree-topping, but now owns the company he was working for,"
adds Mrs. Robbins.
"Of course, I know that Steve is the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. But what
Carol Garland, Jack Mefford, and Don Eby doing?" asks Mr. Detaille.
"Carol is chairman of the board of Paramount Cosmetology School in H

CLASS HISTORY
With graduation only four years away, the forty-four Freshman class members started on their
way to a higher education and a higher goal. This class included: Larry Beam-President; Roger
Riege-Vice-President; Herb Smith-Treasurer; John Vangas-Secretary; Dale Denlinger-Reporter;
Karen Ledwell and Tom Karns-Student Council. Other members were: Joe Blankenship, Ruth
Benbow, Joe Ballard, Judy Babington, James Childers, Don Eby, David Ehler, Shelby Ferguson,
Carol Garland, James Hack, Anita Hamm, Dolores Hofacker, Dennis Jefferis, Sue Johnson, Dennis
Kreitzer, Ira Kreitzer, Walter Kreitzer, Sharon Menchhofer, Jack Mefford, Richard Nisius, Roberta
Phillips, Sherry Robbins, Roberta Roselius, Sandra Schleiger, Rose Smith, Floyd Spitler, Richard
Spitler, Delbert Tabor, Jack Tilton, Bill Voge, Karen Vogue, Carolyn Whited, Ellen Whitehead,
Fred Wright, Dale Wysong, Lonnie Zwiesler and Nancy Fahrenholtz. During the year we lost
Joe Blankenship, Walter Kreitzer, Roberta Roselius, and Fred Wright. We were initiated by the
Sophomore class. Our sponsor for the year was Miss Woolf.
As we began our Sophomore year, we had forty-two class members. During the year we gained
Barbara Maxwell, Marilyn White, Norma Moberly, Herb Getter, Cliff Getter, Shirley Walden
and Freda Mosley. Our sponsor for this year was Mr. Long. Our officers were: John Vangas-
President; Don Eby-Vice-President; Gene Carter-Treasurer; Steve Blankenship-Secretary; Karen
Vogue-Reporter; Larry Beam and Anita Hamm-Student Council. We initiated the Freshmen
this year. As the Sophomore year concluded, we had lost Shelby Ferguson, Herb Getter, Cliff
Getter, Norma Moberly, Roberta Phillips, Shirley Walden and Carolyn Whited.
Our junior year came swiftly, and with it came new students and new experiences. As the year
progressed, we gained Beverly Allison and LeRoy Reeder, and we lost James Hack, Dennis
Kreitzer, Anita Hamm, LeRoy Reeder, Delbert Tabor and John Vangas. Our activities through
the year included the ordering and receiving of class rings, the selection and giving of our
Junior Class Play, "Papa Was A Preacher," on November 9, 1956. Because we sold over our
quota for magazines, we were able to have a class party. We made plans and looked forward
to the big moment, the Junior-Senior Reception, at the Biltmore Hotel. Our class officers for
the year were: Don Eby-President; John Vangas-Vice-President; Ellen Whitehead-Treasurer;
Karen Vogue-Secretary-Reporter; Karen Ledwell and Larry Beam-Student Council.
Our Senior year began. We acquired two new students, Ann Bilger, and Manfred Detaille. We
lost Sherry Robbins, Herb Smith, Gene Carter, and Richard Nisius. We had the pleasure of
ordering our Senior Class pictures from Osborne Studios, in Middletown, Ohio. We, also, gave
our class play. We worked hard on our annual and school papers. We ordered our invitations
and announcements. Mr. Shaw was our class sponsor. Our officers for the year were: Larry
Beam-President; Dale Denlinger-Vice-President; Karen Vogue-Secretary; Sandra Schleiger-
Treasurer; Nancy Fahrenholtz-Reporter; and Ellen Whitehead and Manfred Detaille-Student
Council. The year passed very quickly and climaxed with graduation.
Those students attending West Alexandria all twelve years are: Roger Riege, Dale Denlinger,
Joe Ballard, Jim Childers, Don Eby, David Ehler, Sharon Menchhofer, Jack Mefford, Sandra
Schlieger, Floyd Spitler, Richard Spitler, Bill Voge, Ellen Whitehead, Karen Vogue, and Dale
Wysong.

We regret to say that, because of the lack of male voices, the chorus
this year became an all-girl chorus.
On December 20 the chorus presented a program of Christmas numbers
before the entire student body and faculty. Following the numbers by
the chorus, everyone joined in singing Christmas carols.
Several members of the chorus went Christmas caroling around West
Alex on December 23.
On March 8 Anne Miller will represent the chorus at a music contest
at the Ohio Soldier’s and Sailor’s Orphanage Home in Xenia. She will
sing "A Garden Coronation" by Thurbow.
Plans are under way for a Spring Concert in the gymnasium. The
Preble County Chorus will be held in May.

FAREWELL, SENIORS
Dear Seniors:
Dear Seniors:
In the past twelve school years you have had many important and interest-
ing experiences. Two particular days of experiences will most likely
stand out in your memories longer than any others--the day you started to
school and the day of your graduation. However, what has happened to
you between these two days will have more to do with what you will be-
come than anything else that is likely to affect your way of life.
It's during this twelve year period of time that many changes take place
in the individual. Attitudes are in the process of change and development;
fundamental skills are learned, practiced, and mastered; and the ability
to evaluate and make decisions is strengthened. Many varied opportuni-
ties which allow these necessary changes to accrue have been provided
for you by your parents, teachers and neighbors.
I congratulate you upon the educational opportunities you have had, the
fine life long friendships you have established, and the achievement level
you have attained. It is our hope that the opportunities and experiences
afforded you have, in some way, prepared you to face the many problems
of everyday living, and that with your own increasing maturity you will
so guide yourselves, that your lives may be examples of goodness for
others io follow.
I congratulate you upon achieving this goal of graduation, and what it
represents, and sincerely wish you success and happiness in whatever way
your paths may henceforth lead. Everyone has contributed to your future
- make the investment lasting and worthwhile.
Sincerely,
John W. Black, Jr.
County Superintendent
At the close of this school year you will have finished your formal edu-
cation at West Alexandria School. All of you, upon leaving our school,
will have an opportunity to become a worthwhile citizen in some com-
munity. In a large measure what you do in adult life will depend upon
you. We trust, however, that your education here at West Alexandria
School will help you achieve the goals you have set for yourself. I feel
confident that your twelve years of training will serve as a strong founda-
tion from which you can build toward greater things.
You and your annual sponsor are to be congratulated on the fine work you
have done on the 1958 "Bulldog." The experiences you have shared while
working on this annual and other school activities will remain pleasant
memories in future years.
I wish to join your parents, teachers, and friends in wishing all of you
much success and happiness.
Sincerely,
Lei Ion McIntire
