High upon a Trojan Hill top May she to her sons and daughters
’Neath the heavens blue, Symbol be of life;
Stands our noble old Buchanan E’re enduring, e’re aspiring
Glorious to view. Undefiled by strife.
Life the chorus, speed it onward
Loud our praises ring;
Hail to thee our Alma Mater
Hail to thee we sing.

As sophomores, vie certainly wer^as the name implies “silly fools,” but
the year was a fun-^Jlinri nnn WcelecKfrCliailcj Ilaldy our president. Jim
Richards our vice-president, Hunter Beckman our secretary, our treasurer was
Gracie Bueneman, and Shirley Corless was our reporter. Our student council
representatives were Mary Jane Martinek and David Hepperman.
During the year we started our first money-making projects by sponsoring
five dances under Mr. Snelson’s supervision.
(Continued)
Sandia Turnbull was candidate for Barnwarmin’ Queen and Gracie Buene-
man was our candidate for Siege Queen. Our Sports King candidate was
Hunter Beckman. Jean Kinion and Carol Snider were cheerleaders. David
Wilkinson was chosen from our class to go to Jefferson City on the Sophomore
Pilgrimage.
This completed our second and last year in old Buchanan High School.
We looked forward to starting our junior year in the new building.
We started our junior year in the fall of 1956. We started the year ener-
getically in new Buchanan which was a wonderful change from the old build-
ing. Hunter Beckman was elected class president in our first class meeting
under Miss Muck’s supervision. David Wilkinson was vice-president, secre-
tary-treasurer was Margie Haddock, with Charles Hardy serving as class report-
er. Our council representatives were Mary Jane Martinek and David Hepperman.
Bonnie Kirchner Braungardt was attendant to the Barnwarmin’ Queen. Our
Siege Queen candidate was Sandra Turnbull. Jean Kinion was elected junior
cheerleader. Hunter Beckman was elected Sports King, an honor he justly
deserved. Mary Jane Martinek and David Wilkinson were Mr. and Mrs. Santa
Claus at the senior-sponsored Christmas Dance. Hunter Beckman, Charles
Hardy, and David Wilkinson were chosen from the class to attend Missouri
Boys’ State at Warrensburg. David Wilkinson was chosen to receive the
American History Award sponsored by the D.A.R.
The Junior-Senior Prom was a sparkling fantasy as an Oriental Garden
in the little theater of the new building. Dude Branstetter’s band provided
the music, and several geisha girls were imported from the sophomore class
to serve the punch and cookies.
We were certainly proud of our class rings when they arrived. Of course,
many of them were seen worn by cute girls from other classes, but for the
most part they remained on juniors.
Our senior year has been a most rewarding one to those of us who have
been lucky enough to make it to this, our second plateau. We elected Arthur
Hoffman our class president, Kee Groshong our vice-president, Janet Evenson
our secretary, and Mary Lou Schieffer as class treasurer. Our student council
representatives were Joe Witte and Skipper Pietzman with David Wilkinson
elected as counciIman-at-largc.
Our cheerleaders were Judie Butcher, Jeanette Evenson, and Jean Kinion.
Bonnie Kirchner Braungardt was elected Barnwarmin’ Queen.
The play, “Papa Was a Preacher” was presented April 11.
We enjoyed sponsoring the Christmas Dance and hoped everyone had as
good a time attending it.
Siege Queen was Jeanette Evenson. Spring Dance King was Joe Witte.
Prom Queen was Judy Butcher.
We enjoyed our trip to the Ozarks and the Junior-Senior Prom. Com-
mencement and Baccalaureate, which once seemed a long way off, arrived much
too soon.
We look back over the years and realize now that there are many thing
we should have done diffenently. We realize that we could have put our
wasted time to much better use and that we could have studied much harder
than we did. We look toward the future with eager expectation and know that
if at first we don’t succeed we can try, try again.

“At last to be upper classmen” was the sigh of eighty-nine juniors as they
began one of the most exciting years of their high school career.
The first time we gathered together with our sponsor, Miss Stice, we
elected the following officers:
President _______________________________________________Ronald Smull
Vice-President _______________________________Janice Bergesch
Secretary ___________________________________Christina Chapman
Treasurer ____________.....................Babs Creech_____
Student Council Members_________.Pam McCoy, Corky Wermuth
The next thing we knew it was time for something quite new to us,
Junior Play. We chose October 11 for the grand date. (New back drop cur-
tains arrived the day before.) We presented a new play that was quite dif-
ferent than anything before. It was entitled “Swing Your Partner.” With
guns, a rattlesnake, city slickers and all, “Swing Your Partner” was a huge
success, bringing us a profit of $262.75.
Junior Play was no sooner over than our magazine sale began. We, the
junior class of ’57-'58, broke all of Buchanan’s records with a grand total of
$1,832. Joo Kinker was our top salesman, which entitled him to first prize,
a Benrus watch.
As we anxiously awaited, it soon arrived, the day we received our class
rings. They have a sunken crest with a torch of liberty on each side. We
are very proud of our beautiful class rings.
The junior candidate for Barnwarmin’ Queen was Janice Bergesch. Our
cheerleaders were Carmen Cortelyou and Patsy Ferguson. Joe Kinker and
Babs Creech were selected as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus at the Christmas dance.
We felt that Christina Chapman would make a good representative from our
class for Siege Queen candidate.
The junior class is serving well every organization in our school. Our
sportsmen display their ability on the A team and in track. Members as well
as officers of F.H.A. and F.F.A. come from the junior class. Along the music
line, we 'help make up band, Choralettes, Choraliers, majorettes, boys’ quartet,
and girls’ sextet. Pam McCoy represented us at Sophomore Pilgrimage last
spring. We are honored to have four members of our class as members of
National Honor Society. Several juniors help as concert ushers and student
librarians.
The juniors have chosen as the prom theme for 1958, a Hawaiian Cruise.
We are reviving a very old custom this year by treating the seniors to a ban-
quet. Plans are now under way for the most beautiful prom ever to be given.
We face the future with high hopes of becoming seniors.

The Sophomore Class of ’57-’58, began their second glorious year of high
school with a grand total of ninety-three. Among these were four new faces.
The purpose of our first class meeting, of course, was to elect our officers
for the year. They were as follows:
President __________________________________________Wayne Krieg
Vice-President ...............................____Donna Bryant
Secretary _____________________________________Freddy Norton
Treasurer ______________________________________ Amelia Luckett
Reporter ______________________________________Steve Cortelyou
Student Council Members _______Jerry Fletcher, John Littleton
Sophomore sponsors were Mr. Lindhorst and Mr. Smith.
Our Barnwarmin’ attendant, Kathy Lawrence, was also elected as Siege
Queen candidate.
This year the sophomores had three cheerleaders. They were Karen Hein-
rich, Amelia Luckett, and Mary Carol Smith. We were also well represented
in the Pep Club.
Sophomores also took an active part in basketball—both A and B teams—
and in other activities.
As a money-making project, we sponsored three dances during the year.
We are all eagerly looking forward to becoming upper classmen.

On August 26, 1957, 140 uncertain pupils started their first day of high
school. They came from all around; Troy. Hawk Point, Truxton, Moscow
Mills, Briscoe, and Old Monroe.
None of us quite knew what we were supposed to do, although we caught
on in a couple of days.
We elected officers as follows :
President_____________________________________________Jean Kadlec
Vice-President----------------------------------------Judy Hardy..............
Secretary-Treasurer ---------------------------------Lynette Cobb..............
Reporter ___________________________________________Murlene McCardie
Student Council ..............Margaret Parrish. Mitchell Luckett
Our candidate for student council-member-at-large, Sandy Watson, was nor
elected. Other candidates were:
Barnwarmin’ attendant............Bonnie Bryant______________
Siege Queen candidate ____________________________Bonnie Bryant
Cheerleaders .......Bonnie Bryant, Lynette Cobb, Judy Fletcher
The freshmen were happy to have 25 students who made the honor roll.
One of our students, Ellen Dye, left right after the beginning of second
semester.
The freshman class played its part in the various school activities for
1957-58 and look forward eagerly to becoming a sophomore.

Sports got off to a good start this year when the baseball team won the
conference championship. The team had an undefeated season, with a total of
seven games played. Neal Leek pitched five of the games and Hunter Beck-
man pitched two. The top average was held by Kenny Lasters at 518. Flet-
cher and Norton tied for second with an even 500. The rest of the averages
are on the next page along with the pictures of the boys who made them.
Troy won another conference championship in basketball by not allowing
themselves to be beaten more than once in 14 games of conference competi-
tion. Outside of the conference they lost five games bringing their total to 23
wins out of 29 games played.
Offensively, the team made an excellent showing with an average of 73.4
p.p.g. (points per game). They ran up a grand total of 2130 points and held
the opponents down to 1818 points, an average of 62.7. The Trojans played
their usual defense this year by committing 469 fouls to the opponents 414.
This evident weakness in defense hindered their record and is probably the
main factor that defeated them in the regional tournament.
At the top of the individual list, Hun-
ter “Ace” Beckman scored 367 times from
the field and 124 times at the free throw
line, making his average 29.6 ppg. and giv-
ing him a total of 858 points for the sea-
son.
Jim Richards was next in line with an
average of 19.6 ppg. Jim, who is a real
sharpshooter, hit 496 times from the field
and plugged 72 free throws for a total of
568.
Art Littleton was prominent under the
boards and is largely responsible for most
of the rebounding. His ability to score
on tip ins and rebounds helped the team
considerably and gave him a 7.4 ppg.
average.
As for the rest of the team, they didn’t
set any records, but their support and
scoring was not merely helpful, but also
necessary. All of these boys were under-
classmen and hold good promise for next
year and the years to come.

The Future Homemakers of America is a national organization for home
economics students. Our chapter, with a membership of 124 girls, has had
a busy year.
Programs throughout the year consisted of picture slides, floral arrange-
ments, and skits presented by the members.
Sixty-five girls attended the Sub-District meeting held at Montgomery
City in October. Janet and Jeanette Evenson served as moderators for the
Talent Show, and our chapter presented a skit entitled “Down on the Farm.”
Margaret Parrish, Amelia Luckett, and Mary Carol Smith were candidates for
state and district offices.
Delegates to the State F.H.A. meeting held in Jefferson City were Barbara
Creech and Mary Jane Martinek. Carmen Cortelyou and Christina Chapman
were our representatives to the All-State F.H.A. Chorus.
Janice Bergesch, Dianne McCulloch, and Susan Young participated in the
Pillsbury Bake-off contest held in February. This is an annual baking con-
test sponsored by the Pillsbury Company.
The Spring Tea was held in the Little Theatre on April 21. The guests
included F.H.A. members their mothers, the high school faculty and members
of the Evangeline Club. Home economics I, II and III girls modeled
their garments made in class, while home economics III girls served as host-
esses.
We chose “My Blue Heaven” with the decorations entirely in blue, as
the theme for our Spring Dance, given April 25. Joe Witte was crowned as
Spring Dance King with Mitch Luckett, Jerry Fletcher, and Jerry Burton
serving as attendants.
Our club mothers, Mrs. LeRoy Crouch and Mrs. George Bergesch, have
helped us to have another successful year.
