THE 1957
CHIEFTAIN _
MR. and MRS. MAURICE G. HITCHCOCK
DEDICATION
Our choice was inevitable. The administration, faculty, and student body desired to
show their appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock for designing, building, and putting
into operation the swimming pool and bath house on our campus. The pool and bath house
were ready last July 1st. They not only serve the community of White Swan, but make
available the means for all students of the school to learn how to swim.
We thank the Hitchcocks for their public spirit and generosity.
The 1957 Chieftain is especially dedicated to them.
ADMINISTRATION
OUR
SUPERINTENDENT
This year, the Superintendent's Message is
directed to the Seniors.
Early in your high school career you gave
promise of great merit and distinction and in the
ensuing years, this promise has been fulfilled.
As one who climbs a mountain, you have now
cattained a point well above the plain, from
vwhence you can look back along the trail over
vwhich you have traveled. This annual chronicles
Ibut a few of your outstanding achievements but
iin future years, as you peruse its pages, happy
rmemories will be awakened.
The promontory you now have gained affords
;you not only a view of the path over which you
lhave come, but also from it you are afforded a
clearer view of the mountain peaks ahead in the
Range of Life, peaks that challenge you to
strive and conquer.
And as the mountain climber conditions him-
self for the greater ascents by first scaling the
lesser slopes, so you have strenghtened yourselves
in your high school years for Life's greater en-
deavors and achievements. _
Frank M. Robertson
OUR PRINCIPAL
Benjamin Franklin once said "If a man
empties his purse into his head, no man can
take it from him. "
The students are to be congratulated on
their fine attempt to carry out the slogan of
Benjamin Franklin.
The 1957 Chieftain is a fine example of
the training and experience that youngsters
receive while in school. The annual will
help to recall memories of high school
endeavors as it is leafed through in years
to come.
Congratulations on a job well done.

the School Board for their interest in our welfare. We appreciate the additions to our high school buildi
The new agriculture and shop building will be helpful to many students.
We are looking forward to the time when an auditorium with ample stage facilities are added. If the
school continues to grow in the future as it has during the last five years enlarged library facilities will
also be needed.
We know our capable school board will find a way to provide us with the room necessary to carry or
our educational program satisfactorily.
Thank you, school board, for your genuine interest in the students who attend the White Swan Scboc

As graduation evening approaches the Senior Class
of 1957 pauses briefly to look back over their years
at White Swan High.
Fifty-three excited freshmen entered White Swan
High School in 1954.
Initiation Day found the freshmen dressed in old

gunny sacks, ribbons tied around their necks, and
baby bonnets nestled on their heads. The next night
the Sophomores treated them to a party.
As Sophomores their activities were: initiating the
incoming freshmen, giving a party for them, giving
the Homecoming Program, holding several cake, candy,
and pie sales to raise money, and decorating for Bac-
calaureate. Their class advisors for this year were
Mr. Sagen and Mr. Shade.
As Juniors they planned the Homecoming Banquet,
received their class rings, sponsored record dances,
and sold pop at the basketball games. The big event
of the year was the class play presented on March 16.
The play, "Here Comes the Brides, " was very success-
ful. The Juniors also sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom
and decorated for Commencement. Mr. Block was
the class advisor.
As they started their senior year, only forty-one
members of the class were left. Thehigh lightsof the

JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS, 1957
Forty-two juniors entered the doors of White Swan knowing that they had many
projects to carry out, but they looked forward to their responsibilities.
Early in the fall they chose the Thunderbird style for their rings.
Record dances after football games and the selling of pop at basketball games
were some of their money-making projects.
The class decided to have the Christmas Homecoming Banquet on the night of
December 20th. Pine boughs with cones and candles decorated the tables. A winter
landscape provided the background for the speakers' table.
They presented their play, "Girl-Shy" on March 22. The rolicking comedy was
a hit with an appreciative audience.
In April they honored the Seniors with the Junior-Senior Prom. Spring colors
were attractively used.
Decorating for Commencement was enjoyable for they knew that next year some-
one would be doing this for them.

1957
The Sophomore class entered school this year with a total enrollment of fifty-
three .
After electing class officers their next task was to initiate the Freshmen. Fresh-
man-Sophomore party was held that night and a good time was had by all.
The Sophomores sponsored dances and sold pop at basketball games to raise
money.
This hard-working class also provided the entertainment for the Senior-alumni
dinner.
Mr. Bricka, class advisor, and Maurice Peugh, class president, led the Sopho-
mores through their weekly meetings and class activities.

The White Swan chapter of the National Honor Society successfully carried out
its duties this year with the help of its advisor, Mrs. Edith Eriksen.
Officers during the first semester were: Lynn Richardson, president; Parke Hinman,
vice president; Patti Brenneise, secretary; and Violet Lumley, treasurer. Second
semester’s officers were: Janice Jo Jordan, president; Virginia Meshke, vice president;
Margaret Pahrman, secretary; and Jo Jean Fiander, treasurer.
Our main project this year was the establishment of a $50 scholarship fund. Other
Honor Society undertakings were the making of a banner to be presented each semes-
ter to the class having the highest percentage of students on the Honor Roll, selling pop
at basketball games, and sponsoring record dances.
Initiation of new members was held in the spring. The basis for the choosing of
new members for the Honor Society is citizenship, leadership, character, and service,
as well as scholarship.

TheF.H.A. Girls installed their officers on September 20th, Mrs. Lew
Meshke and Mrs. Robert Turner were introduced as the new Chapter Mothers.
On October 13, a delegation of sixteen girls participated in the Regional
F. H. A. meeting in Toppenish.
This year the F. H.A. sponsored a cake walk at the Sugar Beet festival.
Their float in the parade won first prize in the junior amateur division.
The annual Christmas Ball was held in the multipurpose room of the new
Grade School Building, on December 19th. The theme was "Winter Wonder-
land." Christmas trees, snowmen, and a winter landscape provided the
background for dancing to the Tacoy Club band. A highlight of the Ball
was the crowning of the queen.
During January, February, and March the initiation, of new
members, the F.H.A. workshop in Sunnyside, a Valentine party, Dads'
Night, and the F.H.A. Convention at Seattle rounded out their
activities except for the Mothers' Tea which was successfully carrier
out in May. The progrgrri was enjoyed by all the members.

FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA
1957 has been one of the most eventful years for the Future Farmers of America. Besides
acquiring a new modern Agriculture and shop building, we also have the latest in equip-
ment.
Money raising projects included three turkey shoots and a father and son Donkey
Basketball game. All were very successful.
This year our judging team proudly brought home to White Swan six banners.
We also have a parliamentary procedure team which we hope will take first place.
The Annual Parent and Son Banquet this year was replaced by a smorgasbord
and open house to show off the new agriculture and shop departments.

Our high school band has been very busy this year. In addition to appearing at
numerous games, it has marched in a parade with other bands for the first time, under
the direction of Mr. Dale Parton and with the help of Mr. Harry Lamson, who drilled
the band for parades.
Band officers this year were Lynn Richardson, president; Jerry Hubbard, vice
president; Tana Turner, secretary; Lila Lumley, treasurer; and Janice Jo Jordan,
sergeant at arms.
The band participated in four separate parades. These parades were the Balloon
Parade in Yakima, the Harrah Beet Festival Parade in Harrah, the Spokane Lilac
Festival Parade in Spokane, and the new Band-O-Rama in Yakima, which also involve:
drilling at Parker Field under the lights, a new experience for the band members.
The band entertained at the beginning of the Senior and Junior Class plays, an
"Early Spring" Concert, the annual Spring Concert, Community Day, Graduation,
and competed with other bands at the Music Festival in Ellensburg. In all, the band
has made the unprecedented number of twenty-two public appearances.
Our hats are off to Mr. Parton, without whose help and hard work this would neve'
have been possible.
PEP
BAND
Due to the difficulty of taking the whole band to games away from White Swan, a Pep Band of about c
third its size was formed. This band played at seven away games and one home game.
Four ensembles were formed this year. The Saxophone Quartet performed between acts of the Se-
nior Play, at the Spring Concert, and at Ellensburg. The Woodwind Quartet and the Brass Quintet com-
peeted for honors at the Music Festival in Ellensburg. A Jazz Band of eight members entertained at the
P. T.A. Talent Show, the Alumni-Senior Dinner, and the Spring Concert.

PEP CLUB
At the beginning of the year, the Pep Club had twenty-nine members. We had our hilarious in-
itiation in October and nine new members joined our club. Later four more girls became members.
We entered a float in the Harrah Beet Festival Parade and won second prize (five dollars for our
poor treasury). The float was really just a little jalopy decorated with streamers and signs. The girls who
rode in it wore old-fashioned fur coats.
We had a busy time making our red plaid skirts for drilling at the basketball games. Thanks to
Mr. Lamson for his instructions - "Wipe that smile off your face" - "lift those shoulders" - "Attention!"
We have also earned money for the new score clock by having bake sales.

GIRL SHY
"Girl Shy, " the junior class play, was presented on
March 22, 1957. The cast is as follows: Don Taylor, Tom
Arsdale; Teresa Hauck, Babs Sanford; Eddy Winton, Oke
Stimson; Carol Cottrell, Peaches Carter; Gaylene Powers,
Asma; Mary Lou Bariish. Birdie LaVerne; Leland Seri, Chuck
Mayo; Elaine Gnavauch, Sylvia Webster; Harlan Menard,
Alfred Tennyson Murgatroyd; Margaret Pahrman, Aunt
Caroline; Glenn Seri, Dean Marlowe; and Jerome Riel,
Mr. Arsdale.
Handsome Tom Arsdale and his lady-killer roommate,
Oke, are on the verge of graduation from college. Tom,
with a reputation of being a "woman-hater, "wishes he
could stop being girl-shy and meet nice girls like---
well, like Babs Sanfordl Oke is a perfect contrast to Tom.
He adores girls and is faithful to two or three at a time.
Babs decides to go to work on Tom, so she changes places
with Birdie, the girl who cleans up Tom's and Oke's rooms.
The impression Babs makes on Tom when he first sees her is
about as unnoticeable as two planets crashing in mid-air.
Then, just as something beautiful starts to develop between
them, in comes Tom's father with a girl from back home.
Tom's father thinks the girl from home is just the girl for
Tom. Babs is put on the spot when the girl she changes
places with returns. The mix-up grows, but things are
settled and everyone is happy in the end.

BASKETBALL
At the beginning of the basketball season there were many eager boys waiting to turn out to make
the season successful.. They worked hard, and never gave up until they heard the buzzer ending the game.
The A-squad had a fairly successful season. They had ten wins and nine losses. They lost most of
their games by about three points. The games were close and exciting. Cecil Sanchey was chosen
Captain by his teammates. Lowell Campfield was chosen Inspirational Player.
The B-squad made an outstanding record with eighteen wins and one loss. They chose Maurice
Peugh as their Captain.
Again this year White Swan High had the top scoring average player in the valley. Parke Hinman
led the scoring averages by a long lead with his 24.9 average points per game.
Thanks to the coaches, also.
Although the Cougars didn't win all their games, they are
