ANNUAL STAFF
The members of the Varinian staff of 1957 have earnestly en-
deavored to mold into one volumn all that has taken place during
the school year 1956-1957. This volumn of the Varinian is an undy-
ing memory of this year's schoolmates, sports, and other activities.
When in later years you pause and look back through this book,
we will feel that our attempt has been worthwhile.

HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1957
As time rolls on, we the senior class of 1957 will look back at the wonderful years we spent as students of Varina.
Through all the trials and tribulations of a class we have fought hard to attain the glorious finish.
How well we remember that day in September 1953, when scared and excited we stood in that enormous gym
waiting to be assigned our homerooms and lockers. Our books were rather heavy when we had to carry them around
for three weeks. We numbered sixty-seven as we entered our first year of high school, the eighth grade, under the
wonderful guidance of Miss Anne Fitzgerald and Miss Juanita Weeks, our sponsors.
By the time we entered our Freshman year we had lost eighteen members as well as our two sponsors. Our presi-
dent was James Jeter and our new sponsors were Mrs. M.B. Barlow, and Miss Sally Alvis, who had joined the faculty
in that year. It was also in that year that we added the new face of Carl Orange to our number. We were very proud
of Betty Aigner being the youngest cheerleader and Nancy Yahley being the smallest majorette. Our boys were very
distinguished in our English play and their famous line was "Yo, ho, ho, and a bottle of rum!"
We shall never forget how scared we were every time we went to assembly for fear the torturous seniors would
initiate us. Our suffering was in vain for it was in this year that the law was laid down—no more initiations. Sad
news came at the end of the year when we learned that our sponsor, Miss Alvis, our principal, Mr. Howard Mears, and
many other teachers would be leaving us.
Having replaced our departed principal, Mr. Mears, with Mr. Robert Marks, we ventured into our Sophomore year.
Ten members Avere lost but we had the new faces of Clyde Austin, Ronnie Baker, Lovelie Dowdy, and Etta Mae
Lucord to begin the coming year. Elsie Smith led the class as President with Mrs. Barlow and Miss Betty Jo Thomp-
son, a new addition to the faculty, as our sponsors.
Well do we remember the night we gave a dance for the grades to raise money for our next year's Jr.-Sr. Prom.
The dance proved to be a big success and all of us were completely exhausted from the excitement of the students.
This was the year the girls of our class won the high school intramural basketball championship. Thomas Wright
made us all very proud by setting a new record in the half-mile for the Henrico Invitational and tied the school rec-
ord.
Our Junior year was one of hard work and excitement. Our number was now forty-four. Our Co-presidents were
Ronnie Baker and Pat Hall with Mrs. Barlow and Miss Thompson, again, our sponsors. We received two new members
Richard McGrath and Kenneth Ferguson.
Dolores Lilly was crowned the "Homecoming Queen of 1956" by Dr. Charles Davis, the superintendent of Henri-
co schools.
Honors were bestowed on Pat Hall, Rose Kiser, Dolores Lilly, Jo Ann Mistr, Garnett Nunnally, Sherry Sutton and
Elsie Smith when they were tapped into the Beta Club. Other honors were bestowed on Dolores Lilly, Elsie Smith,
and Sherry Sutton when they were tapped into the Quill and Scroll.
Carl Orange made us very proud when he made All-Suburban second team in basketball. Two of our members,
Beverly Phelps and Alice Panther, left us to get married.
The Junior vs. Teachers games proved to be quite successful. Of course the teachers all looked quite freakish in
their crazy garb. The best Christmas present for us all was the arrival of our class rings.
The Junior -Senior Prom, after lots of hard work, was very successful. The theme was "Cherry Pink and Apple
Blossom White."
Well we were Seniors at lastl With the start of this year we numbered forty-eight. We received two new mem-
bers, Garland Priddy and Robert Jackson.
Ronnie Baker was President of the Class of 1957 with Mrs. Barlow and Mrs. Margaret Smith, replacing Miss
Thompson who was lost to the happy state of matrimony, as our sponsors.
Garnett Nunnally was elected President of the SCA while Elsie Smith and Dolores Lilly were editors of the annual
and newspaper respectively. Betty Aigner and Barbara Lawerence served as co-captains of the varsity cheering
squad. Rose Kiser became Mrs. Harry Miller, Jr. and Cary Lee Poole became Mrs. James C. Mulligan. Carl Orange
was captain of both the varsity football and varsity basketball teams. Jo Ann Mistr was selected as the "Good Citi-
zen" to receive the Daughters of American Revolution Award.
Our group was the first in Varina's history to take a Senior trip to New York. The class play, "Almost Summer"
was a smash hit| Never will the Senior Banquet be forgotten as one of the most memorable nights of our lives.
With sadness and regret, but hoping to bring success and happiness from our lives to this big world of ours, we the
Seniors of 1957 leave dear old Varina behind us never to forget her.

STUDENT COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION
The Student Cooperative Association is the parent organization of all other clubs. Its members include all the
high school students, eighth through the twelfth grades. A self-supporting organization, its money comes from pro-
fits of the book store. The S.C.A. standing committees cover all phases of the school work.
This year the S.C.A.*s main drives were for highway safety, better teeth, polio shots and X-rays. We were
represented at both the district and state conventions.
