Putnam City High School
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
V' are citizens of a city, chough you won’, find it on any map or globe. To us it is very real, bur most peo-
ple simply call it Putnam City High School. Some live here longer than others, but: rn r ree years we all
Lee Yet a small part of each student remains; backstage ar the All-School Play, on the football Held when
we made the winning touchdown, or by the locker with our carved names.
In our city, we have a government, the teachers and the Student Conned; and a populate, he classes wrth
.heir many personalities. Still the real city is rhe individual student. Without h.m there would be no erty, no
A big part of a city is its social life. Ours keep us busy with clubs, sports, plays, and numerous assem-
blies. The main business is, of course, study. The 8:30 to 3:30 time clock includes quite a lot of overtime.
Like any city, we have our dreams, our hopes, our plans for the future. Some of us desire a college educa-
tion, others want to conquer the business world. Most of us will just be average people, with a family and
a home. __ .
The seniors have a special feeling about the city. For years it has been their life, a second home. Now
they must leave it. With them go many memories.......the last Spring Formal, the Senior Assembly, and
finally graduation. As they walk under the rose-covered arches, the city fades from view. But wherever we
go and whatever we do, our city, Putnam City, will never disappear. It is timeless.
In token of the appreciation for Mr. Ralph Downs’s sincere interest in our school and its students, we dedi-
cate the 1957 Treasure Chest.
Mr. Downs was graduated from Bethany Peniel College with a Bachelor of Science degree. He has been a
member of the Putnam City teaching staff for the past seven years.
In Mr. Downs’s schedule he teaches journalism and bookkeeping. He is sponsor of the Pirate Log, our
school paper, which has improved greatly under his direction. The new Pirate Log offers subscriptions and
advertising to merchants and many new features which have appealed to the student body.
In 1955 Mr. Downs accepted the position of school counselor. He willingly devotes three hours each day
aiding our students in the proper choice of colleges and professions and in any problems they might have
concerning education. By giving interest, personality, and aptitude tests, he has greatly benefited all the
high school students.
As we dedicate the 1957 Treasure Chest, we hope Mr. Downs will become aware of the fact that we, as
students of Putnam City, hold him in highest esteem.

. Our Administration
MR. D. D. KIRKLAND
Superintendent
1957 marks the thirty-eighth year of
school experience for our superintendent,
Mr. Kirkland. Seven of these years
have been administered at Putnam City.
During his administration, we have seen
our school become one of the ten largest
in the state. He has had the responsi-
bility of nearly forty-five hundred stu-
dents. During his seven years, we have
seen the transformation of the old
Arnett Building into a modern school
building, the construction of a large
Junior High, and buildings for the grade
school. Due to the efforts of Mr. Kirk-
land and others, a bond was passed by
the parents of our school district for a
one-million dollar high School. The
preliminary work has been started and
will be completed by September of 1958.
The duties of the secretary to Mr.
Kirkland are familiar to Mrs.Marjorie
Hubbard who has held this position
for seven ybars. Although Mrs. Lee
Mason was secretary to Mr. Mayfield,
our principal, last year, she is now
assisting Mrs. Hubbard in the super-
intendent’s office. The responsi-
bilities of these ladies are limitless.
SECRETARIES, Left to Right: Mrs. Lee Mason and Mrs. Marjorie Hubbard
Mr. Mayfield’s secretary, Mrs. Jo Ann Troyer, is new
in the principal’s office this year but she is well-acoua-
inted with the high school and its students.
Mrs. Troyer is a 1956 graduate of Putnam City. She
graduated rn the upper five per cent of her class. Be-
cause she was well-liked by her fellow students, she
received the Senior Citizenship Award. She was award-
ed a scholarship to z\ A' M but instead, accepted the
position as secretary to the principal.
Dear Class of 1957:
Congratulations on your graduation. Here
is hoping that the training and associations
that you have had at Putnam City High
School may be ever helpful to you in your
further pursuits.
I p to now much of your reading and learn-
ing have been reouired to fulfill classroom
assignments. From now on the choice of
material you read will oe n ote your own.
There is much great literature in the world
today and of course there is much trash.
May 1 take the opportunity to encourage
you to seek out the best for your reading.
I would especially recommend two sections
for your thought and study. One is The
Constitution of our I nited States. This is
probably the greatest instrument of its
kind in the world today. It has been the
blue print by which this country has reach-
ed its great position. However, it is great
because it has feeling and consideration
for the individual.
The Holy Bible is the other selection that
I would recommend for your constant
thought and consideration. While the
Constitution contains plans for building a
great country the Bible contains plans for
building a great life. I recommend them
both to you.
Sincerely.

The School Board of Our City
Left to Right: Seated: Vice President, E. G. Stambaugh, President, A. A. Lynn. Standing: E. W. Patzack, V. Lawson, Dr. R. L. Renegar
The Board of Education of our city is a group of public
spirited citizens who co-operate with the superintendent in
solving the many problems that arise in connection with a
school the size of ours.
The future expansion and growth of the Putnam City Schools
is being provided for by an extensive building program.
We would like to express our gratitude to these gentlemen
who give so much of their time and efforts to bettering our
community.
Kay Crandall -has attended Putnam City High School for
three years. She has retained excellent grades. She has
participated in all our chorus functions. Upon graduation
she plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and to major
in some phase of secretarial work. Concentrated effort and
strength of character are typical of Kay.
Sadie Heise has been a student at Putnam City High School
for eight years. During those years she has made superior
grades and excelled in music. She plans to attend the Uni-
versity of Oklahoma and to major in business administration.
Hard work and outstanding ability will be certain to reward
her greatly.

Charlene Hulsey has been a student at Putnam City High
School since the eighth grade. Her grades have been extreme-
ly good throughout high school. She has received many a-
wards for vast scholastic ability. In preparation for her
career as a dental hygienist, she plans to attend the Univer-
sity of Kansas City in Missouri. Charlene’s brilliant schol-
astic work teamed with her witty personality will prove to be
her greatest assets in the future.
Roger Tucker has attended Putnam City since the eighth
grade. He has shown his outstanding athletic ability be-
sides making excellent grades. His pleasing personality
and friendliness have made him a favorite of the entire stu-
dent body. In September Roger will enter Oklahoma A & M
College where he will prepare for an engineering degree.
Having one of the most important scholastic keys to educa-
tion, he will attain the ultimate goal of success.

he was named the All-City Coach-of-the-Year.
For the first time in several years the Pirates won
the Midland Conference Championship and competed
in the State Class A play-offs. The members of the
team received many individual honors and also gained
the respect and pride of the entire school.

Girls Improve Physical and Mental Alertness
In sports the boys have nothing over the girls. At Putnam City we
have a very active group. They participate in many games: tennis,
table tennis, badminton, volleyball, softball, and basketball, in which
they compete in tournaments tvith other schools. Besides learning the
rules of good sportsmanship they keep trim, healthy figures.
After competing in a designated number of games, the girls receive
letter sweaters to certify that they have lettered in the various sports.

Being in the Honor Society is the highest goal a
student at Putnam City can attain. However, there
is much hard work and study involved. Each
member must retain a grade average of at least 2.5
and a citizenship grade of A’s.
One of the projects of this organization is the
production and selling of the student directories.
These Honor Society members of our city will

Student Council
The Student Council with the assistance of
the faculty serves as the government of our city,
promoting better understanding and school spirit.
The representatives are chosen from each home-
room.
The officers and members of the executive
group attended two conventions recently at
Lawton and Tulsa with the purpose of exchang-
ing ideas with others to better our school.
The goal of council for two years has been a
Victory Flag. This goal was realized this year.
The flag was to be flown after all school vic-

Vocal Music Department Features Assemblies
This year the vocal music department has had
Mrs. Patsy Corrigan as director. She directed the
Girls’ Glee Club, Boys’ Glee Club, Mixed Chorus,
and various ensembles.
The big highlight of Putnam’s music year was the
annual Christmas assembly. It was given as a concert
with the theme, "What does Christmas mean to me?*
The nativity story was read and accompanied with
appropriate music.
During the spring the chorus takes part in several
music contests and concerts.

Nothing adds more to the spirit of a
school, than to see their band in their
colors marching on the football field. The
Putnam City marching and concert band has
proven their outstanding talent in winning
many awards this year. In the fall they
won first in marching competition at the
Highway 66 opening. The 7:30 practice
during the football season, produced many
attractive and interesting half-time cere-
monies. The band has contributed their
time aiding the pep club at the morning
pep assemblies.

beneficial organizations at Putnam City. Its activities
are numerous and appreciated by the entire student body.
One of the most important functions is the preparation and

In addition, the girls have done an excellent job in keep-

Drama Adopts Pie
The drama department, Mrs. Wood and a few ambitious students
started with little equipment this year. Many things were to be
decided in this year’s production, all requiring hard work and
sacrifice. There were color schemes to be chosen, furniture to
be acquired, and stages to be built. The students worked hard

Seltzer Routine
The All-School Play was presented on November
15th and was a gay, rollicking comedy in three acts.
It’s success was accomplished by the actors, direc-
tors, managers and the staff. It was highlighted by
a pie-throwing routine which gave the play a hilarious
theme.
The Junior Play was given on February 28th and to
the delight of the students was also a comedy. It’s
seltzer bottle and German maid added much laughter.
Both plays were very successful and each netted
about four hundred dollars. These productions pro-
fited this year and provided wholesome entertainment
for the student body.
