Additional Information
“School days,school days.
Dear old Golden Rule days. . .*
It’s a little old fashioned, but the meaning’s still there.
When we walk down the school steps for the last time
we’re glad we made it but still a little sorry to leave.
The part of our lifetime spent at school is different
from any other. The classmates we talk with in the halls,
the games, the proms, the pep rallies, the assemblies,
the everyday routine of school life—these will all have
a special corner in our hearts.
This book’s purpose is to set down these memories in
print. Whether it’s June 1957 that you’re leafing
through it or June 1997, we hope that you and your
classmates will “come to life” from the pages and help
revive the moments of your high school days.
And now, may we, the staff present. . .

IN DEDICA TION
The editors of the 1957
East Detroiter are proud to
dedicate this yearbook to
our retiring football coach,
Alva Asbury.
He was bom in Comfort,
West Virginia, received his
Bachelors Degree from
Central Michigan College
and his Master of Arts De-
gree from George Peabody
College.
Mr. Asbury coached three
years at Standish, losing
only one game while there.
After leaving Standish, he
taught and coached at Cad-
illac for another three years.
Coach Asbury came to
East Detroit in 1948. His
teams have never finished
lower than third place and
this year, after being in
second place in ’54 and ’55,
came through with the E.M.L.
Championship.
We salute Coach Asbury
for bringing this great ho-
nor to our school.

THREE FUN PACKED DAYS
It was a cold bleak day when 47 members of the January graduat-
ing class left for Snow Valley Ski Club at Gaylord, Michigan. The
crowded bus rang with laughter and a lot of noise. Finally their
destination was reached and the sight of the lodge was the most
wonderful sight that had been seen since the trip began. Besides
skiing and tobogganning the opportunity was given to all to go inside
and have an enjoyable game of bowling. The first place everyone
headed for was the lunch room after their hike of one mile from
where their cabins were located.
Falling in the snow with pajamas on was the event experienced
by Mr. Robert Reynolds. (Wonder why he was outside with pajamas
on?) Also, Mrs. Betty Reynolds, Miss Margaretta Buell and Mrs.
Anderson threw away their crutches and for these few days they
felt just like one of the crowd. After three full days packed with
fun these tired seniors returned once again to Home Sweet Home,
East Detroit, Michigan.

Publishing a newspaper involves many talents. Re-

sell newspapers, collect ads, and exchange papers with
other schools but also get to try their hand in the art
field, such as setting up show cases and making
posters.

Season Highlights
East Detroit Higtis 1956 football squad, along with capturing its first gridiron
EML championship, set new records and made Shamrock history all year.
The Green and White went undefeated in nine games and racked up a total of
267 points, 11 points above ’55 and a number which has never been equaled in
East Detroit history, while allowing there opponents only 40 points.
Out of 2,059 yards gained in rushing by East Detroit, Gary Ballman All-State
fullback accounted for 50% or 1,042 yards. Gary sci
the season, more than any other class A gridder.
Jim Balkwell and Ed O’Hara, East Detroit’s key quarterbacks, connected with
end Eugene Picard for 10 touchdowns, a state record for a Class-A end. Gene
took his place, along with Gary, on the All-State roster with a record of catching
47.2% of all passes thrown to him and averaging 246 yards per catch for a net
gain of 171 yards.
The Shamrock’s line, a pre-season pre-dicted weakspot, better then doubled ail
records held by past Irish teams and cut opponents gains in half. In 1955, for
example, the Shamrock iron curtain held opponents to 1666 yards on the ground
in rushing, an Irish record, but in 1956 EDHS rivals only moved the pigskin 899
yards.
East Detroit, however, did find one weakspot by the end of the season. The
Shams were penalized 810 yards to only 255 by opponents.
Next season the Shams will be minus approximately 20 graduates from the
varsity squad, but will still remain on top of the contention for the EML title with
such staunch returnies from the ’56 squad as Gary Ballman, Al Sulki, who was
hindered by a bad leg most of the ’56 season, end Ron Emrick, and linemen Neil
Thomas and Ken Warner will also be back. But it may be a long time before the

records of the greatest grid team in East Detroit history are broken.

STORY OF THE SEASON
EML Champs again! East Detroit’s basketball team didn’t take a back seat
to the football lads this year but went on through a fog of pessimism to become
Eastern Michigan League Basketball Champs.
A season record of 14 wins and 10 losses, suffered at the hands of the Cosmos.
of Hamtramck on January 29, carried them into the regional play at Birmingham.
It was here that the Irish came through with their third regional championship,
by defeating St. Joseph, Mt. Clemens, and Berkley.
From there the Shamrocks traveled to Ypsilanti to win the first quarter final
game in the history of East Detroit High. But the fans saw their heroes drop a
hard fought battle to Austin Catholic in the Semi-Finals of the State.
Gary Ballman, for the second year in a row, took high scoring honors with
312 compared to last years 247 points.
All in all, this was THE year for the Irish.

The baseball team started this year
with the knowledge that they are bound
to have a better team than last year. At
the time of publication, the season was
entirely ahead, but the prediction of a
good season has as its basis the fact
that the team couldn’t lose more games
than last year.

“Shamrock Shenanigans of 1957’ got off with a roar this year
when a cast of 75 combined talents to take a capacity audience on a
“non-non-stop” jet ride “around the world in 80 minutes”.
Some of the more hilarious stops were made in Russia, Africa,
Cuba, and Dogpatch, USA, with dances, comedy, and song setting
the pace.
This was the nineth year Mr. Enwright directed the show and
this year he was assisted by student writers, Charles Sheffer and
Ken Siloac, and dance directors, Marian Davies, Judy Fields, and
Jim Draschil.
Mr. Al Marco arranged the music for the show and directed the
band. Joan Gerds served as accompanist.
Proceeds from the show are used to help defray cost of pub-
