SENIOR CLASS HISTORY
As we, the Senior Class of 1956, look back over
the years, we recall many pleasant memories of our
high school days.
In the fall of 1951, we entered the eighth grade
eighty-seven in number with Mrs. Edna Hockaday,
Miss Maude Motley, and Miss Juanita Weeks as our
homeroom teachers. After being assigned to our
homerooms, we met our new classmates from Montrose
Elementary School. After carrying our books around
for three weeks, we were assigned our lockers.
One of our more memorable events in the eighth
grade was the publishing and selling of a newspaper
and a magazine which we edited in Mr. William D.
Hart's English classes. As a result of this endeavor,
we were able to raise enough money to hold a picnic
at the home of one of our members, Janet Lawrence.
After completing a year of frustration and trying
changes, we entered our Freshman year.
Having lost twenty-three of our original number
we were happy to welcome several new faces, namely
Raymond Baker, Jimmy Bozarth, Janice Canfield,
JanetFrench, BillHarrison, Jean Vaughan, Tom Von-
tom, Billy Wagner, and Betty Waitman.
Miss Kathryn Carter and Miss Maude Motley led
us through our Freshman year with Edward Outland
as President of the class.
We shall never forget our trips to the auditorium
where we were met by strains of the death march every
time we entered the door. For our final initation we
were made to scrape gum off desks and pick paper
off the floor. Ours was the last initation administered
at Varina.
This year brought forth many pleasant surprises
for the members of our class. Peggy Martin was chosen
Homecoming Queen, Jean Vaughan made the junior
varsity cheering squad, and Wayne McLean, through
his fine play as the catcher on Varina’s baseball team
was placed on the All-Suburban League Baseball
Team.
We entered our Sophomore year with Miss Jane
Leitch and Miss Maude Motley as our sponsors and
with Jean Vaughan heading the class of sixty-five
sophomores. Janet Lawrence and Charlotte Brooks
were made junior varsity cheerleaders, while Jean
Vaughan became a varsity cheerleader.
The highlight of this year was when Martha Dvorak,
Ernest Johnson, and a member of the Freshman class
entered and won the Latin Tournament.
After serving Varina High School for eleven years
our principal, Mr. W. Howard Mears, left Varina to
become principal of the new Douglas Southall Free-
man High School.
As we entered our Junior year we welcomed Mr.
Robert R. Marks, our new principal, who, though un-
accustomed to Varina's habits, helped us tremend-
ously.
During this year we added two new members to
our class, Calvin Baldwin and Ned Harris.
Bill Harrison served as President of our class while
Miss Jane Leitch and Miss Maude Motley again were
our sponsors.
Hard work paid off for Martha Dvorak, Betty Fray-
ser, Ernest Johnson, Bernice Jones, Janice Nuckols,
Edward Outland, Barbara Shinn and Beverly Ukrop for
they were tapped into the Beta Club.
We shall never forget the day our class rings ar-
rived just before Christmas.
Our Junior-Senior Prom, whose theme was "Some-
where Over The Rainbow," proved to be a big success
as a result of the hard work of Mrs. Roxie Hill, Miss
Jane Leitch, Miss Maude Motley and the various com-
mittees from our class.
It was also during this year that Janet Lawrence
and Peggy Martin became varsity cheerleaders, while
Janet French was made a junior varsity cheerleader.
Rachel Nuttall was elected co-captain of the girls'
varsity basketball team.
Georg Bergemann and Wayne McLean co-cap-
tained the baseball team. Again this year as in his
Freshman year, Wayne McLean made the All-Subur-
ban League Baseball Team at the position of catcher.
Ned Harris, at the State Forensic Meet in Char-
lottesville, won top honors in the spelling contest.
Patsy Smithers placed first in the table setting con-
test sponsored by Miller & Rhoads which won for our
Home Economics department a lovely set of dishes.
The Beta and S.I.P.A. Conventions were well
attended by members of our class.
Fourofour members, Martha Dvorak, Er-.;;st John-
son, Barbara Shinn, and Beverly Ukrop, te taken
into the Quill and Scroll.
We entered our Senior year with Edward Outland
heading our class as President for the second time and
Miss Jane Leitch and Miss Maude Motley as our spon-
sors for the third straight year. Two new faces, those
of Etta Mae Lucord and Nelson Waldrop, brought our
number to fifty-six.
This year Bill Harrison headed the S. C. A.
Martha Dvorak edited The Varinian.
Ernest Johnson was editor of True Relations.
Rachel Nuttall and Jackie Woods were tapped into
the Beta Club.
Georg Bergemann, Betty Frayser, Ned Harris, Bill
Harrison, Bernice Jones, John Jacobsen, Janet Law-
rence, Janice Nuckols and Edward Outland were in-
stalled in the Quill and Scroll.
Charlotte Brooks and Janet French moved up from
the junior varsity to the varsity cheering squad and
with Janet Lawrence and Jean Vaughan, who served
as co-captains of the varsity cheering squad, added
glamour to the sports by their cheering.
Georg Bergemann and Woody Sandeford were
elected co-captains of the football team. Wayne
McLean, Woody Sanderford, and Edward Outland made
the All-Suburban League Football Team as quarter-
back, fullback and second team guard, respectively.
With the advent of basketball season Rachel Nuttall
was chosen captain of the girls' varsity basketball
team and Billy Wagner was chosen captain of the boys'
varsity basketball team.
Georg Bergemann and Wayne McLean were re-
elected as co-captains of the baseball team.
Two of our girls have their futures planned for
themasthey were married this year. They are Shirley
Wade Southward and Mary Jane Meade Hughes.
After much discussion and debate, the play "Aunt
Emma", a comedy in three acts, by John M. Gran was
chosen as our Senior production.
Thrills were yet to come as we looked forward to
May Day, Class Day, the Senior Banquet, baccalaurate,
and finally—
Graduation.

SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY
The year is 1966. The place is the office of Ernest Johnson, managing editor of the
New York Times. Four of his best reporters, Joe Barlow, Jackie Owen, Shirley South-
ward and Beverly Ukrop, have just been summoned into his office. Upon their arrival,
Ernest assigns them to cover the Academy Awards Presentations. Shirley and Beverly
immediately catch a plane for Hollywood, while Jackie and Joe stay in New York to
cover the New York part of the presentations.
Academy Awards night arrives and as Jackie and Joe arrive at the theater in New
York, they are delighted to see the familiar faces of many of their former classmates
at Varina. In attendance are Jean Vaughan, who represented Virginia in the Miss Uni-
verse Contest last year, and two famous Conover models, Peggy Martin and Jackie
Woods. ’Due to arrive any moment is the young man who has recently become an
overnight success as a comedy star. He is Woody Sanderford. His arrival is followed
closely by the arrival of that very popular couple Edward Outland and Janet Lawrence.
Janet is a famous movie star and Edward is her director as well as her husband.
Why over there is Mary Jane Hughes and Barbara Taylor, hair stylists for some of the
leading Broadway stars. And makinghis appearance at this moment is Wayne McLean,
star catcher of the New York Yankees. Wayne, who has just made a film about his
life entitled "The Wayne McLean Story", is accompanied by his lovely wife, Janet
French, who has reached fame in her own right as a comedy star.
In Hollywood Beverly and Shirley also see several familiar faces as they arrive at
the theater. In the lobby of the theater they meet Georg Bergemann and Ned Harris,
who are with their wives Barbara Shinn and Shirley Panther, respectively. Georg has
attained fame as an actor and Ned as a writer. Arriving at this very moment are Billy
Wagner and Nelson Waldrop, the producers of that popular movie "Aunt Emma" with
the co-stars, Janice Nuckols and Patsy Smithers.
Already seated in the audience are Martha Dvorak, President of the Marvak Studios,
where those famous stars Lewis Lanham and Billy White, work; Rachel Nuttall, who has
just completed a film on the life of a famous female sports star; and Sammy Wagner,
who has been collecting awards almost yearly for his set decorations in movies.
As the master of ceremonies in Hollywood and the mistress of ceremonies in New
York appear before the audiences, the reporters recognize Eugene Ledford and Charlotte
Brooks, his wife. As the ceremony begins, the audience is entertained by a talented
concert pianist, who is none other than Betty Frayser. During the course of the pre-
sentations, two of the most popular songs of 1966 are sung by Bernice Jones and Ruth
Saunders. After the ceremony is over Jackie and Joe go backstage to congratulate the
the winners and are surprised to see John Jacobsen, top cameraman for N.B.C.
When the reporters turn in their stories to Ernest, he is very satisfied with them but
after discovering what has happened to so many of his former classmates, he wishes to
know what has happened to the .rest of them. Therefore, he sends the four reporters
out once again, this time with instructions to find out what has happened to the rest
of the Class of '56.
After several weeks of searching the following facts are learned. Tommy Driggs,
former bus driver at Varina is now owner of the Greyhound Bus Lines. LarryBlanks has
become President of the American Tobacco Company, with Guy Jones as his Vice-
President. Larry's secretaries include Jean Fritts, Helen Sledge and Ann Yandle. Cal-
vin Baldwin, Richard Ellis, and Robert Shearer have made a career of the Armed Forces.
That exclusive Paris originals dress shop on Fifth Avenue is owned by Dorothy Dowdy
and Barbara Emerson. Shelia Alvis has become a successful interior decorator. A used
car lot is owned by William Cauthorn and Wayne Norman. It seems to do quite a lot
of business. Mavis Bohr, Lois Davis, Hazel Odum, andTrevaQuesenberry are all
happily married and are members of the P.T.A, Emmett Gregory and Stuart Trice are
co-owners of the Gregory and Trice Construction Company, Etta Mae Lucord has at-
tained a great deal of success in the business world as a result of her friendly attitude.
Last, but not least, Bill Harrison is President of the United Fruit Company.
When the reporters turn this report in, Ernest is very happy and proud to hear of the
achievements of the Class of '56.
