SENIOR CLASS HISTORY
As we, the class of 1955» ate about to leave Varina, we wish to recall some of the happenings of our
class.
How frustrated we were as new eighth graders when we assembled in the gym waiting to be assigned to
our homeroom teachers, Miss Juanita Weeks, Miss Maude B. Motley, and Mrs. Edna Hockaday. There we
met our new classmates that arrived from Montrose School.
How we dreaded carrying books from one class to another over a three week period until our lockers
were assigned.
By the end of that year those dignified seniors had a little more hope of our becoming human beings.
As we entered our Freshman year, Mr. William Hart and Mrs. Kathleen Mears joined our class as home-
room teachers with the intention of remaining with us through our senior year. However, that spring Mr.
Hart decided to leave us but not until he had taught the Hokey-Pokey the following September. Mrs. Mar-
garetta Stephens inherited Mr. Hart’s group as her homeroom.
What pleasure the seniors got from initiating us. Surely everyone remembers seeing Donald Seelman
proposing to Pat Lipford on the stage. The biggest laugh was when Nathan Dowdy, dressed in a cigarette
pack, danced to the tune of "Old Black Joe’’.
We shall never forget our long-awaited bingo party switcheroo and dance during our Sophomore year. We
pride ourselves on the proceeds we received from this first dance. Our class welcomed several new faces
this year of 1953> namely Jimmie Hall, Roberta Hussy, Albert Parady, and Aldelaide Terry.
We entered our Junior year with Wyatt Renick officiating as president. Our main goal was to raise money
for the Junior and Senior Prom.
Kenneth Morris, James Neagle, Jerry Brummell joined us to help form an outstanding football team for
the coming years. Those of us who had the required scholastic record and other necessary qualifications
were tapped as Beta Club members.
How we waited to get our rings before Christmas, but to our disappointment they didn’t arrive until
January.
Our basketball season was a thrilling one. We are especially proud of John Dvorak who made All-
Suburban.
Finally April 24, the date of our Junior and Senior Prom, rolled around. We shall always be grateful
for the hard work that Mrs. Stephens, Mrs. Mears and Mrs. Hill rendered to carry out to the last letter, our
theme of the prom, "Song of the Islands.”
What disappointment when we learned that our principal, W. Howard Mears, who had been with us eleven
years and Mrs. Mears, our loyal sponsor for three years, were leaving Varina to take over the new Douglas
Freeman High School.
With Rex Dorey our class president, we entered our senior year. We welcomed a new sponsor, Mr. Judd
Lewis, while still remaining with us was our faithful sponsor, Mrs. Stephens.
Ramon Johnson was heading our Student Body as President of the S.C.A.
Barbara Smith and Lois Gregory were editing the newspaper and annual.
James Matthews and Lawrence Duke, co-captains of our football team, led us through one of Varina’s
most successful years having an 8-1-1 record. Lawrence Duke and James Farmer represented Varina on the
All-Suburban team. Virginia Crawford, Katherine Smellie, co-captains, along with Pat Lipford and Betty
Bolton added some glamour to sports through theit cheering.
This led us into basketball season where John Dvorak again received All-Suburban rating and broke
several school records by his shooting ability. Barbara Hicks was chosen co-captain of the girls basket-
ball squad while Betsy Nelson, Pat Lipford and Katherine Smellie racked up points for the team.
Many school records were broken by our track members, Ramon Johnson and Kenneth Nielsen.
Not only has our class proven that we have brawn but brains as well. Rex Dorey was appointed one of
six Virginians to be a charter cadet at the Air Force Academy in Denver, Colorado. Lois Gregory received
an honorary membership to the William Byrd Chapter of the Daughters of The American Revolution for her
academic rating and good citizenship.
When May Day season arrived, we chose Virginia Crawford as the one to be crowned queen of May with
Betty Bolton and Katherine Smellie as her maids-of-honor.
Our Senior Play "Dear Diary” by Donald Payton will never be forgotten. Hercules and Wilbur, portrayed
by Wyatt Renick and Ralph Trammell, threw everyone into gales of laughter with their mischievous actions.
What confusion was brought on by Betty Lou’s make-believe diary! Our success was due to the fine leader-
ship of our director, Mrs. Mabel B. Marks.
No class history would be complete without including the co-operation of Mr. Brown, who so willingly
assisted us in all our extra-curricular activities. He gave many hours of his time to help us with our
dances and our play.
Within a few days, we as a class will disband. We regret leaving our many school friends and teachers.
However, the time has come for us to leave Varina to take our respective places in the outside world. Thus,
we close the pages of history on the
Senior Class of 1955.

SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY
The year 1975. Place: Lyne Aigner’s Sheep Farm. The Varina class of 1955 is
holding its reunion. Several changes have taken place since this class left Varina. Many
of the students have now become prominent citizens.
The crowd has just rushed over to greet the honorable governor, Rex Dorey. His
chauffeur is none other than David Wallo, former bus driver at Varina. Some of the other
celebrities are Norma Buchanan, who has recently returned from a world-wide concert
tour. Among this group, are two teachers, Jimmy Neagle, who is at this present time
professor of American History at the University of Richmond, and also Betsy Nelson, now
head coach at Madison College.
We also recognize a distinguished looking gentleman, Ramon Johnson, who is pres-
ident of the Richmond Life Insurance Company. Of course, being a very outstanding
executive, he has to have many secretaries to carry on his business; however, we are
happy to find Helen Smith and Shirley Salmons taking over his correspondence with the
greatest efficiency.
Two men and a lady in uniform have made their entrance. These three important
people are Admiral Renick, Brigadier-General Brummell, and Major Barbara Roberts; all
in the United States Armed Forces.
Gathered in a corner we notice the mothers discussing their children’s progress in
the various schools. Among them are: Barbara Smith, Grace Dowdy, Lois Gregory, Beth
Shearin, Helen Horton and Mary Groome.
A cloud of dust can be seen in the distance, for James Hall, Alfred Brown, Charles
Southward and. Bernard Seal are exceedingly anxious to try out their new stock cars on
the new highway between Varina and Williamsburg.
Time goes on, as it waits for no man. Our loyal friend, Lonnie Brandon, is faithfully
performing his duty, not only as the head bus driver for the Greyhound Company, but also
part owner and manager. Really, it makes all of us so happy to know that Betty Bolton
is the most accomplished telephone operator of the Tidewater Telephone Company. We
are also impressed with the manner in which Albert Lickey carries on his own fish busi-
ness — the largest fish business in the east.
Again, we see Kenneth Neilsen conducting his own T.V. show, co-starring Mary
Frances Poole and Ralph Trammell — the academy award winners of 1966. No wonder,
for they were coached by a world-wide dramatic artist, Albert Parady.
Lo, before our eyes, we see the distinguished basketball player, John Dvorak, and
his lovely wife, Katherine Smellie. We are surprised to see among this great crowd, the
retired and elegant professional football player, Lawrence Duke. Our happiness again
is increased by the presence of Kenneth Morris and James Farmer who are proud owners
of famous auto shops. Then we see that jovial young lady, Pat Mabe and her millionaire
husband, Alfred Mistr. Pat’s housekeeper is none other than the generous, lovable soul,
Katie Mae Lampkin.
To help brighten our day, Thelma Robinson and her cavaliers play and sing in the
midst of this crowd. There is the famous army engineer, Tommy Purcell and his sec-
retary Charlotte Wendel. Naturally, if we should have serious trouble, we could always
depend on Sheriff Felix Salmons to control the situation.
From the literary world, we see two distinguished ladies Katherine Hamner and Patsy
Lipford. Of course, everyone is anxious to get their autographs.
That large beautiful home that many of you have seen in Windsor Farms, built by
Whitlow & Tredway Construction Company belongs to two important people, Virginia
Crawford and James Mathews who are helping us celebrate this great reunion.
Last of all but not least, we see Dorothy Jeter and Barbara Hicks wearing expensive
clothes from their own dress shop. The styles came from Paris.
This reunion was a huge success and everyone who attended was proud to see the
achievements gained by his fellow classmates.
