EXPERIMENT

There are a host of things we shall remember you for, Mrs.
Saxton, but most of all we shall remember you for:
The many adventures we had with you in the days of the
Roman Empire and the Spanish Conquests
The philosophies of life you passed on to us.
The fine example of adulthood you gave.
The method you used to make us work in class without our
knowing it.
The way you always glowed with a youth and vigor we some-
times envied.
The way you believed and never lost faith in us.
The many times you "covered up" for us.
These things and many more will be held by the class of
'55 with the appreciation from those of us and past classes
you have helped and to whom you have given advice.
To you, Mrs. Saxton, the Senior Class of 1955 wishes to dedi-
cate this our last official publication.

Once upon a time in the city of Gary there lived a
group of scientists who sought to discover a formula for the
successful citizens of tomorrow.
In the suburb of Brunswick the modern Thomas A. Edi-
son laboratory was constructed to house their toils.
This is the formula that after great research they have
revealed:
S2 + C + A = C T
The following log depicts in greater detail the method
of their success.

INTRODUCING THE CHIEF SCIENTIST WHO, BECAUSE OF HIS GREAT
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF YOUTH WAS CALLED
UPON TO SUPERVISE THE EXPERIMENTATION.
DR. C. E. SWINGLEY
TO THE SENIORS OF 1955
Seniors, you represent another ex-
cellent group of young men and
women who have completed the re-
quirements for graduation. You have
taken advantage of the wonderful
opportunities offered in the free pub-
lic schools of the United States. We
are sure you appreciate your school
and the many teachers who have
helped you. As the years go by you
will appreciate this school and your
teachers even more.
Soon you will become a member of
that strong group of boosters com-
posed of our graduates. We hope
this will always be your school; that
you will be proud of it; and that all
of us can be proud of you.
We thank you for your contributions
to our school and as you go forth
to college, to work, and to various
types of activities, we wish for each
the very best in happiness and suc-
cess. We are happy to have had a
part in the shaping of the attitudes,
habits, and life of each.

Homecoming
Alice Filipowicz, Joan Hale, Johanna Swanson, Jean Opinker, and Sandra Forbrich, Homecoming
Beauties.
Student Council always gets off to a good and early start
being the first organization to assemble in September.
Among the many activities sponsored by our club and class
representatives, Homecoming activities and the coronation of a
Homecoming Queen take the lime light. There was a giant parade.
bonfire, and pep rally which lead into a grand homecoming
victory over Portage. Ray Forbes, president, crowned Jean Opinker
queen of the festivities. Everyone had a gala time at the dance
held in her honor which followed.
A new and very worthwhile activity this year was the eighth
grade orientation program. The Council assisted by explaining
to the Freshmen-to-be about our high school organizations and
activities.
The last activity of the year was the presentation of scholar-
ships to the two Senior girls and two Senior boys with the highest
scholastic average. Then Mr. Elster thankfully put the phonograph
and records away for the last time as school was closed for the
summer.
Dr. Swingley pins an orchid corsage on Jean Opinker, Homecoming Queen of 1955.

"Busy day. busy day"—this in
a plural form might well be a
commercial for Edison's Hi-Y.
There have been "busy days."
Our Y.M.C.A. sponsored group
has helped greatly to improve
the appearance and prestige of
Edison. Among their service pro-
jects were the football and bas-
ketball schedules, Christmas dec-
orations on the windows and in
the halls of the school, and ush-
ering at ball games.
President Ralph Chilelli and
Bob Clark attended the district
convention at Oxford, Ohio, and
came home loaded with ideas for
a terrific year of Hi-Y activity.
There was time for social ac-
tivity also. Pat Drake was
crowned Snow Queen at the Hi-Y
Snow Queen Sock Hop. and their
sister organization, Y-Teens, col-
laborated with the boys to spon-
sor a swimming party at the
Y. M. C. A. which was a
“splashing success."

old jewelry to two hours of Y-Teen work for the

The Y-Hier‘s have given a friendship scarf to
Liberia, had three booths at the Y.W.C.A. Cen-

and helped with Girls' Conference activities.
This work was rewarded at the end of the year
with a dance, sleepless slumber party, and a
soggy, but gala, splash party co-sponsored with
the Hi-Y.

"Anchors Aweigh!" sang the chorus, as the
Thomas A. Edison Glee Club, under the direction
of Miss Feather, set sail for foreign shores.
While on board, the choral group was enter-
tained by visitors from Norway. Holland, Africa,
China, Hawaii, Brazil, and Mexico.
Between the strains of a Chinese Lullaby, and
the romance of "Lovely Hula Hands," time was
taken for a peek at "Dress Reversal," contributed
by the boys of the Senior Dramatic Class.
After touring the various countries, Miss Fea-
ther and the Glee Club decided that even though
they'd had a wonderful time, their theme song
was still "America for Me."
Senior Dramatics
E. Mihok-Historian, R. Cavanaugh-Treasurer, R. Schlagel-President, J. Hale-Vice-Presideni,
Carol Murley-Secretary.
"The Play's the Thing".
Set the keynote for the Senior Dramatics Class this year. Their first
projects were three one-act plays and a short skit entitled "Dress Reversal".
Their activities also included a trip to Purdue University for the Annual
Debater's Conference and Legislative Assembly.
The presentation of their major production, "The Night Was Dark", a
mystery comedy in three acts, brought to a close the end of another busy and
dramatic year for the club.

Happy Anniversary to the Edison Band!
For 15 years they have been contributing their
fine music to the school and the community.
At the Concert on April 22nd, the band
had its first showing of their new uniforms.
To add to the festivities the Concert was given
in the new gym, and attracted a wonderful
crowd.
This was the climax after 2 years of hard
work by the Ban-Stra boosters and the students
to raise money for this happy occasion.
Good Luck to the Band!

Good clean fun. That's the main purpose of the Girl's Athletic Asso-
ciation of Edison. Since the completion of the new gym, they have held
regular meetings and taken up new activities such as tumbling, and also
badminton. This year they had their annual Christmas candy sale, Valen-
tine's Day Turnabout Dance, and a spring banquet for the installation of New
officers.
Even though the girls are busier than ever, they never forget their code
of good sportsmanship, better scholarship, and the development of leadership.

The 1954 football season saw the Blazers
of Edison win outright their first Calumet Con-
ference Championship. The team also held
the city’s best record with nine wins and one
loss. The team's leading scorer, Jerry Hicks,
captured the city scoring crown, and four
other members made the "All Conference Foot-
ball Team," Jack Beno, Doug Oppman, Joe
Piazza, and Glenn Eakright.
It looks as though our nine-game winning
streak may continue next year thanks to Coach
Bras and his promising material.

JACK BENO
The Blazers did it again! For the fourth
time in five years the Blazers have won a share
of the Calumet Conference Championship with
a 7 won and 1 lost record.
This year's team established two records
and tied another. They have scored more
points in one season than any other Edison
team with 1282 points! They also set a Con-
ference team scoring record with 554 points,
and they tied the all time single game record
with 103 points in the Dyer game. The team's
average was 69.1 per game.
Some of the highlights of the season were
the Merrillville game, which Edison won 81 to
75 in an overtime to permit the Blazers a share
of this title. In the Gary Sectionals they were
behind by 9 points at the start of the last quar-
ter in the Horace Mann game. They held
them scoreless for 9 minutes as they won 55
to 51.

OUR FORMULA FOR SUCCESS
First take one top man, Doug Oppman. Add to an
eager Freshman class, and the result—"The Snow-
flake Serenade," our first successful high school
dance.
Next include a generous portion of Sophomores
with Jack Beno as the chief ingredient and many
successful Activities including "Bow Day", and
"Movie Day", something new and different.
Glenn Eakright is the next addition and then a
very crucial element, the Prom. "Rhapsody in Rome"
is the chosen theme and lives up to everyone's
expectations.
Ralph Chilelli leads the final elements amidst
"The Senior Sock-Hop", first dance in the new gym
and the senior picnic at Goodfellows Camp. Add the
finishing touches, a few strains of "Pomp and Chi-
valry", a trace of tears from the departing seniors
and the experiment is finished.
As the scientists eagerly gather to gaze- into the
test tube they see the end result of all their labors,
the class of 1955, the Citizens of Tomorrow.
