The camera caught Mr.
Major seated at his desk in
the office in the act of sign-
ing a letter. Note that
twinkle in his eye which is
so characteristic of him.
Mrs. Lewis is serving a
customer in the bookstore.
That hand which you see
through the window re-
ceiving change belongs to
some nameless individual.
Careful, sir, don't drop it.
Jane Brown had stopped
by the guidance office for a
chat with Mrs. Gray, our
counselor. “A secretarial
course at a good business
school would be a fine in-
vestment,” says Mrs. Gray
and she means it. See that
pencil e mphasizing the
point.
A few minutes to go and
the class bell will ring. Fay
and Margaret are having
combination trouble, but
that couple up the hall
seems to have forgotten
time completely.
Algebra class and Mr.
Mitchell. He has those
girls hard at work as usual.
X"Y=O is serious business
this morning.
Mrs. Gray is happy. Her
favorite subject, the life
and works of Geoffrey
Chaucer, is the topic for
discussion and she is pos-
itively beaming. It may be
fortunate, though, that we
get back view of these
members of English IV,
Richard looks interested,
but Charles better open
that notebook! !
In a few ni .utes all
these empty tables
will be filled with stu-
dents who are really
putting their minds on
their work. The lunch
hour is the favorite
period of the day for
many of us when we
can at last follow those
tempting aromas to
their source and pass
our plates up for a
serving. “Don't be so
slow, fellows; move
along, I m starving.
The ladies who make
the lunch period so
te mpting with their
good cooking relax
after the rush is over
and plan to eat in peace
and quiet. Mr. Bough-
ton seems to have
been slighted today, or
isn’t he hungry?
The shop class is
shown here in their
new quarters. It is
hard to believe that
this scene of busy ac-
tivity is in our lunch
room of last year. The
senior boys are really
working hard under
Mr. Baber's watchful
eye.

3. Robert counts the money and gives it to Richard,
who as usual, in the morning, writes the receipts.
4. Sara Lee, the efficient copy editor, is at her type-

5. Ray takes a picture, but of whom?
6. Charlotte and Fay look well satisfied. Can it be

Ju Appreciation
To Mrs. Louise Eubank Gray, the Senior Class dedicates this page of the Middleshxon
in appreciation of her unlimited patience and sympathetic understanding during the five
years of her leadership. None of our projects or problems have been either too large
or too small for her careful consideration. Her faithfulness, wisdom, and constraint
have served constantly as our guide posts.
By this gesture we express our gratitude for her unselfish devotion to us during our
entire career at Middlesex High School.

Class History
EIGHTH GRADE 1949-50
We the class of *54 entered Middlesex High School in 1949 with mixed
emotions. Some of us were excited and enthusiastic, some were a bit
timid and indifferent, while still others were just happy-go-lucky. But
all of us had the same dream--to be Seniors and march down the aisle to
the tune of Pomp and Circumstance.
Although we took very little partin the activities of school that year
with the help of Mrs. Gray and Miss Evans we were content with learning
how this business of high school life operated. Kathryn Ware and Sylvie
Apsley represented us in the May Court. The greatest event of that yeai
was our trip to Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg by bus. Aftei
that we settled down to exams and grades.
FRESHMEN 1950-51
Back we came in September to begin again the struggle to our much
coveted goal. We took a little more interest in extra-curricular activi-
ties this year, the most popular being Dramatics Club, Glee Club, and
Varsity.
Mrs. Gray and Miss Evans were once more our co-sponsors. Our
attendants in the May Court were Margaret Milby and Kathryn Ware.
Again we dreaded the last two weeks of the school year with its exams
and the final relief of reports that said we “passed.”
SOPHOMORES 1951-52
Here we were back to school for another step toward that Senior
“glory.” Our sponsor that year was Mrs. Gray. We put a great deal
more into school clubs that year. Cheerleading and Band joined our list
in popularity and our representatives became more active in the Student
Council. Our court attendants were Sylvia Apsley and Ann Hogge.
We couldn't possibly forget our class trip that year. We had planned
and dreamed of it for so long and then we finally got to Washington, all
in one group. That was a wonderful day even though we nursed blisters
for days afterward.
JUNIORS 1952-53
We began our junior year under the sponsorship of Mrs. Gray and
we began immediately to plan for the Junior-Senior Prom. InNovember
we sponsored the Talent Parade and in December the annual Beauty Con-
test to raise money for that purpose. The winner of the contest was one
of our own members, Kathryn Page Ware.
Our prom went off very nicley. The gym was decorated to represent
a summer garden by moonlight and to add to the fun and excitement we
decided to have a Prom Court. The queen of the court was Martha Ann
Revere and the maid of honor, Lorraine Price, both from the Senior Class.
Sylvia Apsley, Margaret Milby and Kathryn Ware were princesses from
the Junior Class. Everything after that was a blur of pencils, books, and
papers paving the way to examinations and report cards which would de-
termine whether we became Seniors or not. Most of us became Seniors.
Seniors!!
SENIORS 1953-54
There was our dream in reality and with a big extra ''gift'' tied in.
We were using our new building for the first time. We began our work
toward the preparation of The Middlesaxon immediately by sending out
the advertising staff and sales manager.
We have yet many things to expect and anticipate. Our Senior Play,
May Day, the prom, the Senior Banquet and then our dream come true,
graduation.
Although we looked forward to that day of graduation we will feel a
little sadat leaving high school and will always cherish the memories of
it throughout the years.

The Student Co-operative Association is the leading organization of the school. The S. C.
A’s membership consists of the entire student body.
This year the S. C. A. is functioning according to the revised constitution as drawn up in
1953.
On December 8 our school was host to the Rappahannock District S.C.A. Convention. The
theme, Developing Citizenship Through Our School, provoked enthusiastic discussion. The
meeting was a very gratifying success.
The Student Council appointed the standing committees for the year. These committees do
the work indicated by their names. On November 24 the social and recreation committee spon-
sored a school party honoring the football players. At this party the players were awarded
monograms for their outstanding work in football.
During the month of November we had an Americanism campaign. The American Legion
presented a very inspiring program after which the school was given a flag by the Legion.
At Thanksgiving the S. C. A. had a program on “Giving and What It Means." The Rev. C.
Furman Hall was our guest speaker. The students, as an out-growth of this program, contri-
buted a number of lovely baskets to be distributed to the needy families in our country.
In the future we are planning to have Trooper Skelton speak to us on safety and its impor-
tance. In this way, we hope to be able to save the lives of others.

The Student Council, the governing body of the school, is composed of representatives from
each grade, with the officers of the S. C. A. serving as officers of the Council.
During the month of October the Council sponsored a magazine campaign. The school
reached its highest goal ever in this field due to the fine salesmanship of the entire student body.
James Haynie and Marian Creighton were the highest salesmen, selling as much as $170.00.
The profit was donated to the Athletic Association to purchase new football equipment.
In order to inform the new students of the school about the council and its activities, a new
amendment to the constitution was drawn up stating that the functions of the student council and
honor code be explained to all new students during the first six weeks of each school year. Later
it was presented to the student body and passed by a majority vote.
On December 22, the student council sponsored our annual Christmas party. Various forms
of entertainment preceded the distribution of gifts by Santa Claus. We closed the party with
refreshments.
During the coming semester we plan to have intramural games between physical education
classes to stimulate school spirit.
We also plan to sponsor a S. C. A. program on "Ethics;”. The purpose of this program is
to build up the integrity of the student body.
In order to have a good student council we must have the co-operation of all students and
must work together with one thought in mind--”TO IMPROVE OUR SCHOOL.”

MIDDLESEX HIGH SCHOOL BAND
When school days rolled around last fall our band had the pleasure
of welcoming our new band instructor, Mr. David J. Kessler. We joined
forces immediately with some real practice to enable us to play at the
Tidewater County Fair at West Point on September 16. Again on Sep-
tember 18 many of our members participated in the Civil Air Patrol
concert. On September 23 we were happy to be invited to play at one of
the historical events of our county, the opening of Twigg Bridge. Other
activities this year have included marching in the Firemen's Parade at
iVest Point and playing for the SCA Convention. Our first real concert
of the year was presented Homecoming Day, November 30 before a large
audience. We proudly participated in another important event of our
school year on November 11, the raising of our new flag presented to
us by the American Legion. We are looking forward to many more
activities with the coming of spring.

Play Festival this year.
In April the club will present an evening of one-act plays which will include “The Moon
Keeps Shining” and “Sugar and Spice."
A silver pin is awarded annually to the best actress and the best actor of the year selected

These are the hard-working members of our Glee Club. They have successfully completed
two big assignments, (1) a part in the homecoming concert and (2) music for the Christmas
pageant. They expect to sing for commencement. The fine spirit of cooperation and unity which
has characterized this club is the secret of the harmony they have achieved not only in their
music but in their club.

HOME
Homecoming Day, the first one of its
kind ever to be held in the county, was ob-
served at Middlesex High School on Novem-
ber 13. The program of events for the
day began with a football game against
Tappahannock, the first to be played on
our newly constructed field. Between
halves Captain Gordon Batley, grimy from
his quota of touchdowns, placed the crown
upon the head of Kathryn Ware, naming her
Miss Middlesex, Homecoming Queen. The
queen and the attendants, Sylvia Apsley,
Phyllis Ailsworth, and Jean Gill, remained
in state to applaud the victory of our team
upon the gridiron field.
COMING
Dinner was servedin the shining, new
cafeteria from 5:30 to 7:30. This attracted
an overflow crowd. Graduates of the first
high schools in the county were among
those present. Miss Bessie Mae Brown,
who holds the record in length of service
among the present teachers, presided as
mistress of ceremonies, recognizing many
in the audience who had contributed to the
county school system.
A program in the auditorium followed,
featuring a one-act play put on by the
seventh grade and a band concert directed
by Mr. David Kessler, band instructor.
The climax of the day came with the
Homecoming Dance in the gym; to the
strains of Frank Longino’s orchestra a
crowd danced until midnight under the
colorful autumn streamers that festoned
the ceiling.
CHRISTMAS
OBSERVANCE
Christmas observance at M. H. S. has become a tradition.
First there is the Pageant of the Nativity in the auditorium
with its age-old story and coveted roles of Mary, Joseph
and the Angel. This is followed by the S. C. A. party in
the gym with the Christmas tree and the distribution of
gifts by Santa. Here we see (1) a candid shot of Gloria in
the dressing room having wing trouble, (2) the manger
scene, (3) the Wisemen before Herod, (4) the grand finale,
(5) presentation of Mr. Major's gift by Santa (Mr. Baber,
in case you don’t recognize him), (6), (7), other party
scenes.

Glenns Virginia
As we come to the last page in our yearbook and look back over the experiences
which we have had in editing it, we realize how much we have depended upon others
in its preparation. First of all, our sincere thanks go to Miss Mary Edna Glenn, our
adviser, who has worked with us tirelessly and whose advice and encouragement have
been invaluable. We appreciate also Mr. Major’s ready help, his friendly interest,
and unfailing cooperation and Mrs. Gray's willingness to lend a hand whenever we
called upon her. To Mr. Earl Agee go special thanks, for he has been especially
generous with his time taking pictures on many occasions when we called upon him.
To all of these people we wish to give a final wave of farewell as we depart and say
again, “Thanks, thanks for everything."
