"THE SPIRIT OF ’54”—what is it? It’s the spirit
of Central’s present. It came from Central’s great
past. It is a proud, friendly spirit that comes to you
when you first enter Central, and stays with you as
long as you remember all the wonderful activities
carried on in this great school.
"The Spirit of '54” will soon be gone, but it will be
replaced by the spirits of ’5 5, ’5 6, and all the years
into the future. So that you will never forget it, we
present to you in these pages
"THE SPIRIT OF *54"

THE BIG ONES
Back Row—Nellie Henderson, Lorene Casey, Alcy Goldsmith, Mary Twyford. Second Row — Audrey Tracy, Arlie Henshaw,
Fay Pun, Oleta Phillips. First Row—Rasa Bierwirth, Helen Phillips, Dora Slone. Mattie Brumley.
CAFETERIA STAFF — At the beginning of
this year our cafeteria staff had an extra load to
carry. Due to the delay in the completion of the
new cafeteria, they had to work part time at
Franklin Junior High, part time here, and all
the time with the carpenters and plumbers in
their way.
We hope that in the future these members of
the staff will have less work to do because of the
many conveniences which have been added
throughout the year. All Central students ap-
preciate the wholesome food and the friendly
service which they received in 1954.
CUSTODIAL STAFF—The men on Central’s
custodial staff worked throughout the year to
keep our classrooms, halls, and grounds clean.
They swept, dusted, picked up after the careless
students, ran the elevator for those unable to
climb stairs, opened stubborn lockers, and did
necessary building repairs. These men knew
many of the students by name. They gave us
service with a smile whenever something needed
to be done, whether it was during school time or
after hours.
Back Row—Joe Ragland, Glen Johnson, Carl Parmenter, Grover Jenks. Second Row—Paul Daniels, N. V. Goodrich, A. C. Nix,
Marion Sparrow. First Row—Roy LaGrant, C. W. Damron, Harold Bumgarner.

SENIOR CLASS — We, the seniors, are now
leaving Central, to be remembered only as the
Spirit of ’54. We take with us the memories of
three years at Central—three years of attending
assemblies, classes, games, club meetings, dances,
hayrack rides, and parties; memories of squeez-
ing through the crowded old cafeteria, of im-
patiently watching progress on the new cafe-
teria, of shuffling confusing enrollment cards,
of futilely searching for parking places in the
morning, and of viewing with pride the trophies
which remind us of the honors we chalked up at
Central during our three-year stay.
Remembering all the fun we had working and
playing together, we bid farewell to O. H. S.
We dedicate to future classes the spirit of friend-
liness and loyalty handed down from year to year
as long as O. H. S. has been standing. In parting
we would like to say, "Keep this Central spirit
alive, and cherish it always.”

JUNIOR CLASS—Our class has captured the
Spirit of ’54 in all our activities and has been
outstanding in the various phases of Central’s
school life. We have helped win many honors for
Central in the fields of speech, sports, scholastic
endeavors, and student government. We gave a
prom to honor the seniors, which we financed by
selling candy every day in the cafeteria and by
selling refreshments at various social activities
all year. One of the services the girls of the junior
class rendered was to carry arches for Com-
mencement. This yearly custom makes Central’s
graduation exercises the most beautiful in the
city.
We are looking forward with great anticipa-
tion to a very happy and successful senior year.
We promise the seniors we will carry the Spirit
of ’54 on through ’5 5.

SOPHOMORE CLASS—We of the sophomore
class have had an interesting first year at Cen-
tral. We have learned a lot about the Spirit of
’54—or as we prefer—the Spirit of ’56! There
was a boom in the filing for officers of our class,
and we have been active in home room compe-
tition for "Sooner Spirit” subscriptions and for
yearbook sales.
We have stars coming up in various sports,
and we rate high in class workund in club activi-
ties. We look forward to two outstanding years
at Central. The enthusiasm we have shown this
year will carry us happily to our own graduation
in ’56.

BLACKWELL—The Cards opened their *5 3 football season
with a decisive victory over the Maroons, 3 3 to 14. Parris and
Hammond each scored twice, while Latham scored once. Parris
passed to junior end Reese for long gains. Maddox, Garr, Gentry,
Smith, and Keel spearheaded the Cardinals’ forward wall.
SULPHUR—Smoothing a sputtering offense in the last half,
Central went on two long scoring sorties in the fourth period and
then turned back a Sulphur threat inches short of the goal in the
dying minutes to nip the Bulldogs, 26-19, on a rain-soaked turf.
McPhail scored first for Central; then Parris burned through
for two more, and Hammond sneaked by for the deciding TD.
NORTHEAST — The Cardinals roared through the Vikings’
line for our third straight victory. The Cards registered a 10-0
half-time lead, then easily maintained an advantage over North-
east throughout the second half and ended the game with a 33-6
victory. All Central scoring was done by halfbacks McPhail and
Parris.
NORMAN—The Cards came from behind in the third quarter
to stomp the Tigers 40-28 at Owen Stadium in Norman. Hammond
scored twice and passed to end Garr for a third tally. Parris
scored once and added many long runs to help set up the other
touchdowns. In the last four minutes of play, McPhail made his
second TD on a forty-yard gallop. Hammond accounted for four
sxtra points.
ENID—Central’s stable of racehorse backs led by McPhail and
Parris thundered past the Plainsmen 35-12, as the unbeaten Cards
chalked up their fifth straight victory. Quarterback Hammond
sneaked over from the one-yard line for the first tally. McPhail
added three tallies, one on a 24-yard run, while Parris scored
once. The big Cardinal line was led by the center, Jones, and by
guards Johnson and Maddox and by tackles Smith and Keel.
CLASSEN—The Cardinals made it six straight by smashing the

Comets 19-7 before 6,000 screaming fans. The first Central tally
came late in the first quarter when quarterback Hammond
smacked over from the one-foot line. Classen made its lone score
in the second quarter and led Central for a short time 7-6. Cen-
tral’s second counter came late in the second quarter when Parris
smashed through the right side of the line. Tackle Keel set up this
score by blocking an attempted Classen punt. Central led at the
half, 13-7. The final Cardinal tally came midway through the
second half. The Cards were sparked by backs McPhail and
Latham.
CORPUS CHRISTI REY—Suffering their first loss of the sea-
son, the Cards bowed to Rey, 24-7. The Texans scored once in
the second quarter, twice in the third, and once in the fourth.
Card fullback Latham was the most consistent ground gainer of
the evening. Hammond scored the lone tally for Central late in
the fourth quarter and added the placement. Lack of reserve
strength hampered the Cards in this inter-state skirmish.
CAPITOL HILL—The Redskins ruined the Cards’ chances for
City or Mid-State honors by downing Central 27-0. The Cardinals,
behind quarterback Hammond, fought to the Redskins’ 11, 5, and
10-yard lines but lost the ball each time before they could score.
The boys really wanted this one and put up a hard fight but could
not seem to keep a drive together long enough to score.
SHAWNEE—Dropping their final game of the season to Shaw-
nee, 34-0, the Cards finished with a six-three count. The Wolves
took advantage of eight Cardinal fumbles to set up their decisive
victory. There were eighteen seniors who took the field against
Shawnee to play their last game of football for Central.
Not only was this the last Central football game for us seniors,
but it also marked the end of Coach Andros’ career as football
coach at Central, his alma mater. He resigned from his post at the
end of the first semester to take up work at his new job with an
oil company.

BASKETBALL—Coach Leon Bruner started his third season
as head basketball coach with but a few returning lettermen.
Handicapped in depth and height, the Cards finished the regular
season with a respectable 12-11 record.
Leon Garr repeated his performance of last year, and finished
the regular season as high point man of the city with a 19.7
average. Other regular starters were Hammond, Compton, Wat-
son, and Robbins. Guinn and Shapard drew the heaviest relieving
chores.
Central’s greatest performance this year was against Shawnee.
The Cards hit 49 per cent of their shots, and Shawnee hit +6 per
cent of theirs. This accuracy was unequaled during the season.
The lead changed hands eight times with eight successive shots,
during the third quarter. The score was tied thirteen times.
Central owes the coach and all the team members a great deal
of credit for holding up well during a strenuous season, out-
manned by almost every opponent, and often giving up to four
inches per man in height.

BASEBALL—The "Fighting Cards” paraded through
the 1953 season second only to State Champion Capitol
Hill. The team boasted a fine 18-5 record last year and
plans to better that mark in 1954. Coach "Babe” Eubanks
made an impressive showing in this, his initial year as
head baseball coach at Central. The Cards’ season was
spiced by two no-hit performances. Bob Warner hurled
his no-hitter against Northeast, as the Vikings fell victim
to Central’s first venture into Mid-State play. Just three
games later, Guthrie took it on the chin when Frank
Proctor blanked the Bluejays without a single basehit.
The Cards showed well in the city and regional tourna-
ments. Hammond, Jones, and Warner were selected for
All-City honors. With the exception of the O. U. tourna-
ment, Central was not a loser to any school except the
eventual state champs. With eleven returning lettermen,
Brown, Burris, Cutler, Hammond, Jones, Latham, Mc-
Phail, Poston, Stephenson, Warden, and Warner, Central
expects another banner vear.

GIRLS’ SPORTS—This class of girls meets daily,
participating in many types of sports according to the
season. These girls practice inside and outside of class in
order to become more skilled in their favorite sport.
The swimming team placed second in a meet which
was held at Classen. We are very proud that our team
did so well, although Central does not have a swimming
pool in which to practice.
The girls’ basketball team won three of the five
games in which they played this year, giving Central a
fine representation as always.
Jane Ellingson, a member of this class, won second
in the finals of the Central State Girls’ high school tour-
nament for the championship of the girl’s singles in ten-
nis. Jane, a senior this year, has placed in many tourna-
ments in the three years she has played tennis for Cen-
tral.
The advanced sports class tied for first place with
Capitol Hill in volleyball this year. Each team won four
games and lost only one.

GOLF — The 1953 season was the best for golf
teams at Central during the last ten years. The par
shooters compiled a 16-4 record in local, state, and
interstate competition. Also Central handed Capitol
Hill their first defeat in eleven years, then went on
to win a tie for the city championship.
The 1954 team consists of returning lettermen

BLACK SKIRTS—The Black Skirt Pep Club
celebrated its thirteenth anniversary with a ban-
quet in November. Central’s athletic coaches
were guests, and a record number of members
and alumnae attended. The group was organized
in 1940 to help enliven school spirit and to fur-
ther interest in school athletics.
A living spirit has been shown through the
Black Skirts’ tremendous support at all ball
games at home and away.
Black Skirts have held numerous honors
throughout the year. The girls kept busy all year
’round with various activities. There was a for-
*
mal dance at Christmas and one in the spring.
This year, for the first time, a dinner-dance was
held at Christmas. Also, there have been sock
hops, parties, and a picnic. Money was earned for
these activities by the girls’ serving at banquets.
Frances Marbury was elected as an honorary
member this year.

shown this year that producing school spirit can
be accomplished while having loads of fun. Be-
sides supporting Central in its athletic program,
we had such social activities as our annual Cen-

Christmas and spring formals, at which times we
announced our new officers. Of special interest
this year was a pancake supper, held jointly with
the Black Skirts. After the supper we had danc-
ing and games in the new cafeteria.
The Black Shirts provide a stage crew to
handle the technical problems of presenting
assemblies.
We are proud of Bobby Pullin, who was chosen

BAND — The pride of O.H.S., under the direction of
Mr. Jack Irwin, stepped out in flashy new uniforms at
their first appearance of the year. The drill team, the drum
and bugle corps, the band members, and the music parents
organization, with Mr. Irwin, have worked hard to raise
funds for these new uniforms.
This prominent school organization has made an out-
standing showing at each performance at football games,
in assemblies, in parades, and in contests. The prizes and
awards brought home are a first place trophy at Central
State Homecoming, a second place trophy in the State Fair
Parade, certificates of "Superior” at Tri-State Musical
Festival at Enid and from the State Marching contest, and
honorable mention at O.U. Band Day. They were one of ten
outstanding bands in the state chosen to take part in the
Homecoming parade at Oklahoma University.
The Drum Major, Joe McGee, who has held this honor
for two years, has the respect of each band member.
The concert given for the students before Christmas
was very well received. The whole school takes pride in
Central’s music organizations.
Officers this year have been president, McGee; vice-
president, Pennington; secretaries, Axton and Fuller;
treasurers, Axton and Harkins; sergeants-at-arms, Young-

BLACK SKIRT DRILL TEAM — With the silvery
flash of batons and the rhythmic step of white boots
marching in perfect time, the Black Skirt Drill Team has
splendidly displayed itself this year by marching in pep
assemblies, at home football games, and in parades. For
the first time, this year, as a special attraction, the drill
team put on an exhibition at the Tri-State marching con-
test. This is a goal which Mr. Irwin and the girls have been
working toward for many years. Although there were no
other competitors, the Central High School Drill Team
put on not only a superb display of showmanship, but also
one that portrayed the "Spirit of ’54” in every cadent

CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR — The
Central choir is composed of advanced music
students interested in the singing of classical and
semi-classical numbers.
Of particular interest were the trips which
groups from the choir made to Norman and
Stillwater to attend clinics. The largest event
was a patriotic program in which they sang with
choirs from other schools for the O E. A. con-
vention. They also assisted in many assembly
programs at Central.
During the week preceding Christmas, the
choir rated newspaper publicity by singing
Christmas carols on the front steps every morn-
ing. Following one of Central’s most cherished
traditions, they caroled in the halls the day be-
fore Christmas vacation.

BAND GIRLS — This organization was
founded in 1945, for girls who are in the band.
The purpose of the club is to promote friendli-
ness and interest in the band. Meetings are held
in the homes of members and are sponsored by
their parents, who work in cooperation with
Mr. Jack Irwin, band director.
The social functions of the club this year in-
cluded slumber parties. Also a formal affair was
held at the first of the vear at which new girls
were initiated into the club. Afterwards the girls
held their annual banquet with the band boys.

one of the best known pep clubs in the city, is the
oldest one west of the Mississippi. Besides being a
pep club, Red Shirts shines in school leadership.
Some of the offices held by Red Shirts this year
Jim Warram, "Pop” Miller, sponsor; Addison Kendall
are these: all three class presidents, president of
the Student Council, all six Junior Rotarians, the
business manager of the yearbook, Sooner Spirit
editor, presidents of the Red Cross, Jeffersonian,
Ciceronian, and Hi-Y clubs, and beaux of both
girls’ pep clubs.
This year the Red Shirts’ activities included
their annual Christmas and spring formal
dances, a Valentine assembly honoring the second
semester sweetheart, support of the teams by
sponsorship of bus trips to out-of-town games,
and the traditional Father and Son banquet in
the spring.
Red Shirts honored Mary Goss as their first
semester sweetheart, and Clara Robertson fol-
lowed Mary as second semester sweetheart.
Goose and Chublett represented the club well by
being chosen Baseball Queen and Annual Queen,
respectively.

in and betterment of the band. The thirty-five
members must practice five hours a week on
their musical instruments, whereas other mem-
bers of the band practice only three hours. The
boys go on paper drives also for the benefit of
the band.
Meetings are held in the boys’ homes twice a
month; the sponsor, Jack Irwin, is also the band
director.
The social affairs this year included a formal

MUSIC CLUB—The Music Club, sponsored by
Miss Eva Lee, is one of the best-known clubs at
Central. This club is made up of students inter-
ested in vocal or instrumental music, either as
a profession or as a hobby. An important event
each year is the assembly given by the club, when
the members display their musical talents. In the
assembly this year the setting showed a wax
works with figures coming to life under the
spell of beautiful music. Places for the bi-
monthly meetings alternated between the school
and homes of the members.

asembly one of the best of the year. The theme
was "Around the World.” Spain, South America,
China, Arabia, Africa, France, and the United
States were colorfully portrayed by art, music,
dancing, and costuming.
The officers have worked hard, and Les Beaux
has accomplished its purpose of promoting art
appreciation among students of Central.

ing Society was founded in 1905 for the further-
ing of extemporaneous speaking and debating
for boys in Central.
The Jeffs held their annual stag banquet dur-
ing the Christmas holidays. The event this year
was attended by many alumni members. The
boys took part in the Jeff-Cice debate, which is
sponsored by the Jeffs, and the forensic meet,
sponsored by the Cices. They also had a hayrack
ride in the spring.
This year for the first time the Jeffs awarded
an achievement trophy for the most outstanding
Jeff of the year. The idea for the trophy was
suggested to the club by Don Middleton, class
of ’51, who also donated the trophy.

MASQUERS—The purpose of the Masquers is
"to recognize, further, and develop interest and
talent in speech work for boys in Central High
School.” The club was organized in 1938 by six
boys who participated in the junior play.
Under the direction of their sponsor, Miss
Maybelle Conger, the Masquers take pride in
their many and varied activities. In March they
hold their annual assembly, when they present a
one-act play for the students of Central. At this
assembly they take in new boys. The boys know
nothing of their membership until the president
calls their names from the stage. The membership
can never exceed twenty, and the club takes in
boys only once a year.
Highlighting this year’s events were the an-
nual Founders’ Day Banquet, which was held in
November, and the picnic honoring the graduat-
ing seniors.

THESPIANS—The Thespians of Central have
had one of their most successful years in ’53-’54.
They celebrated the 2 5th Anniversary of Na-
tional Thespians with an all-day regional confer-
ence in the spring. They are all very proud of
Miss Conger, who was selected as Regional Di-
rector of this area.
The Thespian Chapter of Central, organized
in 1947, is an honorary club for students who
have done work in speech activities or stage-
craft.
Two formal initiations are held each year; this
year, for the first time, dances followed the ini-
tiations. There was a definite spirit shown by
Thespians and their indefatigable sponsor, Miss
Maybelle Conger.
Honorary members are Mrs. Anita Kramer,
Miss Martha Truax, Miss Eva Chowning, Mr. M.

NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE — N.F.L.
is one of Central’s foremost speech clubs. Its
membership includes those who specialize in
tournament speech. The initial goal is twenty
points, which are accumulated at the various
tournaments, with higher degrees awarded as
the points mount. The highest and most treas-
ured is the Degree of Distinction, which is
awarded when 200 points have been earned. Both
Wayne Hensley and Viva Marks have this de-
gree. Only last year Miss Maybelle Conger, spon-
sor, received a diamond key because of the total
points her speech students have earned over a
period of fifteen years.
GOLDEN KEY — This is an honorary dra-
matic club for girls. The new members are
announced at the awards assembly each spring.
They are chosen by the faculty for outstanding
work and ability in speech. The club is purely
honorary, having no scheduled meetings; its
members are proud to wear their golden keys.

HI-Y—The Hi-Y at Central is sponsored by
Mr. Van Meter. The organization is found in
schools throughout the world, helping to spread
our ideas of freedom and democracy in foreign
countries. This year our club sent six representa-
tives to the Pre-legislative Conference at Nor-
man. From there the delegates went to a Hi-Y
Youth and Government program at the state
Capitol building, where our club had two rank-
ing officials. The group was also represented at
the state Hi-Y convention held in Bartlesville,
and at numerous other Hi-Y functions.
LIBRARY AIDS — Organized in 1950, this
club is for students interested in library work.
The library aids spend an hour each day work-
ing in the library and receive one-half credit.
Each day they have special duties, in addition to
their regular jobs, such as taking care of the
desk and giving assistance to those students de-
siring it.
Meetings are held once a month, and there are
parties all through the year, including an annual
picnic in the spring. Membership requires no dues
or assessments.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY — Founded
in 1922, Central’s chapter of the National Honor
Society is the oldest one in the state. A senior
must have a "B plus” average, and a junior must
have an "A-minus” average to become eligible
for membership. However, a student does not
attain membership in the society for scholarship
alone; his character, his leadership and his serv-
ice to the school are taken into consideration by
a faculty committee.
Honor Society members have as a worthwhile
project the selling of school supplies in order to
give service to the students and to earn money to
buy Golden O’s and Honor Roll awards.
In the spring the graduating seniors enjoy as
guests of the Student Council a one-day trip to
either O. U. or A. and M. and in this way become
acquainted with the offerings of the two major
state colleges.
Sponsors this year have been Miss Wallace,
chairman; Miss Lowther, Mrs. Lockwood, Mrs.
Aldrich, Miss Angevine, and Mr. Ryder.

ENTRE NOUS—Entre Nous (among
ourselves), the French Club of Central,
was organized in the spring of 1945 with
Miss Ruth Snell as sponsor. Although
enrollment in a French class is a require-
ment for original membership, once en-
rolled, a student may continue in the
club after his French course has been
completed.
The purpose of this club is to further
the interest of students in the French
people, their country, and their customs.
Bi-monthly meetings, held alternately at
school and at the homes of members, are
conducted in French for the benefit of
the students who wish to practice con-
versational French.

BARBER TRADE — The Barber Trade class
was organized in 1951. Central’s barber class is
the only one of its kind for white high school
students in the Southwest. The shop is as well
equipped as any shop in Oklahoma City. All of
the supplies, tools, and shop coats are furnished
by the Board of Education.
This course is a three-hour trade class, which
consists of sixteen students. The class convenes
twice a day. There is a class in the morning, and
one in the afternoon. Any student who is six-
teen years old may enroll in this course, and after
he has completed two years of study he can ob-
tain an apprentice license. A student must work
on his apprentice license until he’s eighteen. If
a student is eighteen and has completed the
course, he may go on and get his journeyman
license. Six students have completed this course
since the class was organized. Most of the boys
are taking this training to work their way
through college.
"Don’t lower the ears TOO much!"
First, second and third places in the

CAMERA CLUB — This club, sponsored by Mr.
Winbray, is* made up of pupils who are interested in
the better understanding of photography. During
their meetings, which are held every other week, they
discuss various phases of the business and practice of
taking and developing pictures. One of their most
interesting activities is ’’model night,” when the mem-
bers take turns posing.
This year the club’s social calendar included a pic-
nic in October, a Christmas party, and a wiener roast
in the spring.

OIL MEN FOR A DAY—The "Oil Men for
a Day” is a project which was started three
years ago by the oil companies of Oklahoma for
the furthering of interest in the petroleum in-
dustry. The boys who represented Central were
chosen for the honor because of their interest in
chemistry and physics.
They were assigned to the various companies
ahead of time and reported to work at 8:30
A.M. on the 16th of October. The "oil men” spent
the morning investigating the various offices
and their functions. At noon they all met at a
downtown hotel where they were honored with
a luncheon given by the oil companies. They
heard an inspiring speech on oil and its part in
today’s mechanized, teeming world. In the after-
noon some of the boys were taken on location
and shown, first hand, how the oil is pumped,
processed, and sold.
It is hoped that each boy gained an incentive
to carry on in the petroleum industry as his
chosen field.

NATIONAL JUNIOR RED CROSS — The
purpose of the National Junior Red Cross is to
give service to the school, the community, and
the nation. The only requirement for member-
ship in Central’s branch is the promise of serv-
ice, and almost all Centralites belong. All home-
rooms and clubs are represented in a council
which meets every other week.
This year’s activities included filling the gift
boxes for foreign countries at Christmas, hold-
ing the annual membership drive in the fall, and
putting on shows for the veterans and for the
young people in the V. A. and Crippled Chil-
dren’s Hospitals.

ANNUAL STAFF — This year the Annual Staff
has worked long and hard to put out a book that
would please everyone at Central. From the compos-
ing of organization write-ups to the choosing of a
theme, our class has struggled to create an interesting
and colorful book.
A big event for the Annual Staff occurred the last
four days of August. Ten representatives from Cen-
tral attended the National Scholastic Press Associa-
tion convention which was held in Minneapolis,
Minnesota. There, the staff members learned many
new ideas, met people from other parts of our coun-
try, and enjoyed a strenuous but delightful vacation
before our school work began again.
Our job has not been all work and no play. Through-
out the year members of the staff have entertained
us. The Thanksgiving dinner, the Christmas party,
and the annual signing party made us appreciate the
good times we’ve had and the many friends we have
made while working on the yearbook.
We hope that we have succeeded in our effort to
make you remember Central and "The Spirit of ’54”
in the years of the future.

report to the students of all the many and varied
activities of the school. The paper is published
every two weeks with the combined efforts of
the printing, photography, and journalism de-
partments. Each edition has captured school life
as it is with pictures, news items, feature stories,
editorials, and the ever-popular gossip column.
The paper was sold this year by subscription only.

George Gibbs (Rufus Maddox) asks Emily
Webb (Viva Marks) if X = y—0?
"OUR TOWN” was given as the Senior Play this year.
This play depicts the life of a New Hampshire village — with its
humor, picturesqueness, and pathos. As the Stage Manager in the drama
says: "This is the way we were in our growing-up and in our marrying
and in our doctoring and in our living and in our dying.”
The play begins in 1901 in Grover’s Corners, where the Gibbses and
the Webbs are neighbors. During their childhood George Gibbs and Emily
Webb are playmates. But as they grow older, they pass from this period
into a state of romantic but embarrassed interest in one another. And
one day George proposes to Emily in the drug store over an ice cream
soda, for which he is unable to pay.
But their happiness is shortlived, for Emily is taken in death and
placed in the village cemetery on a rainy, dreary day. In the most vitally
moving scene in the modern theatre is shown the peace and quiet of
death, which can never be understood by the living.
Stage Manager (MoxHefley) asks Emily Webb (Viva Marks) and
George Gibbs (Rufus Maddox) if they want chocolate or straw-
berry.

MUSICAL PLAYLETS — This group of CenCralites meets
seventh hour as a regular class. Twice a year the group presents
an operetta in assembly as a special entertainment for the student
body. All chorus and solo numbers are taken by regular members
of the Musical Playlets class, who are not necessarily music
majors, but just people who like to sing. The students them-
selves provide the necessary costumes, and the settings are ar-
ranged by the stage crew of Central.
Scenes from the first semester operetta are presented here.
This was a tuneful musical comedy, which provided one of the
most enjoyable assemblies of the year.
