Dear Miss Feather, Miss Briley, and Mr. Sparks,
You are the ones of our teaching staff who have been here since the
year our permanent building was opened.
When we think of all the help and friendship you have given us, we
know we can never thank you enough, but deep within our hearts we have
great appreciation of your years of teaching here at Edison School. It gives us
much happiness to dedicate our Reflector to you.
Sincerely,
The Class of 1953

DR. C. E. SWINGLEY, PRINCIPAL
Going Foreword With a Purpose
This year I shall be completing thirty years in
public school work as a teacher and as an adminis-
trator. Almost eleven of those years I have been
principal at Edison. I have enjoyed each year and
am looking forward to several more years in this
desirable profession. School work to me has been a
privilege as well as a great responsibility.
My philosophy of service is well expressed in
the following lines by an author now unknown:
"I shall pass through this world but once.
Any good I can do, or any kindness that
I can show any human being, let me do it
now and not defer it. For I shall not pass
this way again."
To the members of this excellent Senior Class,
one of the best groups we have ever had to graduate
from Edison, I wish the best of success in life. I hope,
as you find your place in life, you can have always
that spirit of service which I have tried to express in
the foregoing lines. You should be willing to give
beyond your regular duties for the good of the
community in which you live and work. The better
you serve others the happier you will be.

OUR ITINERARY
Our first day at Edison! Remember? Rather, how
can we forget that eventful day when we first entered
Edison School! We were not old enough to drive a
car, so we rode along leisurely with a horse and bug-
gy. To us, Edison seemed big and new and unfriend-
ly at first. But with the wonderful guidance of Mrs.
Anderson, our kindergarten teacher, we learned to
make warm, faithful friends that would share good
times with us in our twelve years at Edison. We, the
class of 53, look back through the rear view mirror
even while our eyes are on the road ahead. We shall
always have happy memories of Edison.
The bashful beaux and the girls with the golden
curls grew taller. We tossed our childhood ways be-
hind and began to grow up. The A.O.A. and many
other activities, including parties, helped to do this.
High School was our next stop. The long awaited day
when we were to be "Freshies" was approaching
fast.
1949-50—Our Freshman class president, John
O'Meara, steered our car along rough roads as we
learned new driving habits this first year along the
high school road. We drove our "grand" old jalopy
at high speeds, but Mr. Ladd and Miss Leskow pa-
trolled the highways to see that we stayed within the
speed limit. The fall of '49 sped along with the Foot-
ball Frolics, featuring a mock football game in which
girls served as football players while boys turned
cheerleaders. The bumpy road gradually became a
little smoother as we joined various clubs and activ-
ities with eager anticipation and high hopes that
slowed us to an even speed. Our first athletic venture
this year was an exciting one. Since it was the first
football season in the school's history, the 1949
schedule furnished real challenge to our boys. The
Freshman Class had two members on the team. We
saw a number of exciting games during the season
and our enthusiasm was high. The first year of High
School was over, but we were far from disappointed
because we had three long years ahead of us.
1950-51—As we reached our second stop sign,
our Sophomore Year, we gave careful thought to the
road ahead. John Vuich took over the wheel and we
adjusted ourselves to the journey before us. When
we entered this second year of high school, our par-
ticipation in school activities increased. We pre-
sented a dance, the Hill-Billy Jamboree, with square
dancing as the high light. Before we realized how far
we had traveled, our road map showed us that we
were ready to enter into our Junior year.
1951-52—With our newly acquired station wagon,
Michael Miller guided us along an even smoother
road into our Junior year. Eager to get under way, we
presented the first dance of the year, the Kick-Off
Kapers. Early in the year a major problem arose:
how were we to raise money for the Junior-Senior
Prom? A successful paper drive was held by the
boys, while the girls sponsored a bake sale. Both
events contributed generously to our Prom Fund. We
also sponsored an April Fools' Dance. Amidst pre-
paration for the Junior-Senior Prom, there were no
detours in our scholastic efforts. We came upon the
sign, "National Honor Society Ahead."
As a climax of this year's journey, we enjoyed
music by Reynold Young's Orchestra at our beautiful
prom, the Moonbeam Mardi Gras, which was held
at the Marquette Park Pavilion. The year was draw-
ing to a close, so we said farewell to the departing
Seniors, and then we refueled our motors for the
route ahead.
1952-53—Our vision is clear, we have increased
our speed, and now Donald Seitzinger is in the
driver's seat. We sparked this year of 53 with co-
championships in both basketball and football. Sev-
eral boys received all-conference awards. The Christ-
mas Dance was a brilliant fete and helped us realize
that we could hold our own with any car on the road.
Senior committees were organized and put forth
their best efforts in preparing the REFLECTOR, plan-
ning the Senior trip, and getting ready for commence-
ment. Our shiny streamlined sedan is ready and cap-
able of accepting its place among the other fine
machinery of the world. The Seniors of 1953 will go
forward with the same boundless enthusiasm that
we have shown before. We are ready to take the
road opening before us. We are Youth!

annual prom, held at Marquette Park Pavilion on May Day. The music was

The Student Council has served Edison School for the last seven years.
It has worked for the welfare of students, and it has given its members practical
experience in administration.
The Council is an organization made up entirely of members of the
student body. These members are selected by elections held by each high
school class and club. The student council members then select their own
officers. These officers form the executive committee. The council helps students
with their problems and offers advise on school activities.
The Council compiles the Edison School Activity Calendar for the year.
This schedules all activities, including the social dancing sponsored by various
classes and clubs.
To raise money for the Scholarship Fund, the Council sponsored a
special dance. The Blue Note Serenade, with music furnished by the Brunswick
Blue Notes, a five-piece band. Another feature of the evening was a card party
to which parents and faculty were invited.
Another important project of the year was the annual S.O.S. Humanity
Drive.

The Future Teachers of America is an organiza-
tion of high school students who would like to enter
the teaching profession after they leave high school.
The purpose of the F.T.A. is to inform its mem-
bers about the prospects, opportunities, obligations,
and problems in teaching. One of the most important
of its activities this year was the annual Regional
meeting which was held at Edison. This conference
proved to be a huge success and lots of fun for
members and guests alike.
All members look forward to the annual city-
wide F.T.A. picnic which is usually held in May. For
a money making project this year the group spon-
sored a dance with the U.S.A. Canteen theme. The
club also enjoyed a pot luck dinner at the March
meeting.

wiener roast. Next year promises to be an even bigger and better year with the
plans for the new gym adding to the excitement!

Junior and Senior Y-Teens
The Edison Y-Teen group is called the Y-Hi. This organization helps
each member grow as a person; it inspires girls to reach out in friendliness to
people of all races, religions, and nationalities. It offers the rich experience of
learning to know and love God.
At Christmas time the Y-Teens collected toys, food, and clothing for
Christmas baskets for underprivileged families.
The lively social dance which the group sponsored was called the
Snowflake Frolic. After the dance the girls had an exciting slumber party
at the Y.W.C.A.

Library Club
The objectives of the Library Club are to promote greater interest among
the students in the use of books and library service, to stimulate reading inter-
ests, and to improve the library service of the school.
Special activities of the club this year were the Bookworm Wiggle Dance
which was held in the spring and the decoration of the library for Christmas.
As a memorial to Miss Mary Homer, who organized the club, one group
bought a copy of the Revised Standard Version of the Bible and added it to
the library this year; the volume has a beautiful bookplate.

Future Business Leaders of America
The chief purpose of the F.B.L.A. is to foster interest in business, and to
increase knowledge of various business fields. The club promotes self-improve-
ment and better preparation for business life. This year the group has partici-
pated in several machine demonstrations.
But the members do not believe in all work and no play, for they have
social activities, too. They sponsored their second annual dance this year, and
they sold the most delicious Easter eggs in Gary.

Beaker Breakers
We organized our club in 1947 during the Centennial of the birth of Thomas
Alva Edison. In our club we increase our scientific knowledge, and we learn
to perfect our skills in science; we gain understanding of the importance of
science in our lives. This year we have attended the Science-Math Assembly at
Purdue and the Science Fair at Notre Dame. We have found it exceedingly
interesting to visit nearby industrial plants as a part of a Know-Your-Industries
project.

our school. It has a large staff, most of whom are from the English and Typing
classes. All staff members are volunteers. The sponsors are Mr. Saxton and
Mr. Pugh.
Our paper has many columns of general interest, including Honor Roll,
Sports, Editorials, Gossip, and others. Most students look forward to the monthly
edition with great enthusiasm.

This school year marks the fifteenth anni-
versary of the Edison Girls' Glee Club. Last fall
the girls gave a refreshing program for the
Regional Meeting of the F.T.A. Then, their big
production of the year was "America Sings;"
that same night, following the program, the
Glee Club sponsored a dance.
At Christmas time the girls thrilled the stu-
dent body with their carols in the halls. For
their own fun they had a Christmas party with
a gift exchange held at Miss Feather's home.
Near St. Patrick's Day the Glee Club pre-
sented a program for the Kindergarten Mothers'
Club.
To close this year the group will sing for
the two long-awaited occasions, Baccalaureate
and Commencement.

The Band, under the direction of Miss Scheddell, assisted by Mr. Zucker,
had another very successful season. This year's band was not only a well
rounded one instrumentally, but had a very hiqh morale and a real desire to
produce an organization that was far better than average. This, coupled with
the excellent directing abilities of Miss Scheddell and Mr. Zucker, made a
band that is one of the best ever turned out from Edison High School.
Special activities of the Band this year included marching, solo and
ensemble contests, concerts, parades, a cakewalk, magazine selling, and
playing for Commencement.

Art of Interpretive Speech.
During the first semester these players presented He, The Singing Girl,
Make up and Live, and Fog on the Valley.
The class has taken two trips: one to Purdue University in December to
participate in the State Legislative assembly, and the other in February when
the group went to Chicago to see Dial M for Murder at the Hanis Theater.
The group presented its major production, Creeping Shadows, on March
25 and 26.
