PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Commencement time ’53 is now history. For seniors, the first major milestone in
your preparation for a useful life has been reached Perhaps the following lines by
Henry Thoreau are timely:
If you have built castles in the air,
your work need not be lost; that is
where they should be. Now put the
foundation under them.
The difficult problems of today call for foundations of such materials as mora
and physical courage, intelligence, skill, judgment, and sacrifice. Those of you whc
rise to the demands of the time by building with these materials will become bene-
factors of all generations to come.

CLASS POEM
On the gridiron, in the class
We’ve fought our battles fast;
With trials that have brought grief and joy
We’ve gained success at last
But through all our happiness
There comes a splash of tears,
To know we’ll never be a part of
The things.we'll cherish through the years
To never hear our band again
Or see them down the field;
To never be a part of the team,
Or feel opponents yield.
This will be our consolation
New life, new hopes, new ways.
With open minds and anxious hearts
We leave our high school days.
—Merle Fowler
CLASS SONG
“Memories”
High school days are over for us Seniors,
And the time has come to say “adieu.”
We shall ne’er forget our loyal teachers;
Memories of them will turn grey skies blue.
If success and fame are ever ours,
We did not succeed alone.
For it was dear Ole Greene County High
That gave us faith to venture on.
—Carmela Bria
Class Historian—Jack Herndon
SENIOR CLASS HISTORY
Once upon a time something very great hap-
pened in our life. The date of this great event was
September 1, 1941. We started to school. Only
ten of the present thirty-two members started to-
gether in the Eutaw Elementary School with Miss
Sadie Smith as our teacher. These ten were Jimmie
Henderson, Lillian McAlpine, Betty Roebuck, James
Lancaster, Dorothy Caples, Jeannine Beinert Pugh,
Edward Taylor, Jack Herndon, Beatrice Gray Harrell,
and Susan Spencer Hitt. Together we learned many
things in the first grade The boys learned that girls
are tattle-tales and the girls learned that all boys
are mean.
Our second year we were joined by Barbara Ann
Carpenter, Juanita Caples, and Norman Richardson
jMiss Amond Palmer guided us through our second
year. Our marble shooting reached its climax in our
second year.
Music! Music! Music! That was the highlight of our third year in school with Mrs. Beckham
Palmer as our teacher. We enjoyed playing in the Kittie Band or "Million Dollar Band"—it was to us
Mrs. Palmer and Miss Bessie Smith were our band directors.
Miss Minnie Fowler welcomed us into the fourth grade By this time we were learning that school
was not all fun.
In the fifth grade with Mrs. Skinner as our teacher, we were joined by Joyce Sanders, Aline Finley,
Carole Reynolds, Oscar Spencer. The fifth grade too was just the same old tune—"Reading, Writing
and Arithmetic.” Yes, even we had to study.
Rodney Allen joined us in the sixth grade to share with us the happy occasion of Grammar School
Graduation. Miss Maggie Head was our faithful guide in our last year of Grammar School. On May 20,
1947, we came to school in white suits and dresses for this was an important day. On this day Miss
Bessie Smith gave us our Elementary School diplomas.
We could hardly wait for the next September to come when we could enter high school or "hog
heaven" Io us. When September did come, Jane Roebuck, Cecil Harrell, Artis Hamilton, Kathleen
Pearce, Rachel Morrow, Winnie Jane Hall, and Harold Phillips joined us at the front of G.C.H.S and
together we set sail on the glorious voyage for a high school education Mrs. Harry McGee and Mrs.
Tom Poynor were our homeroom teachers. Our chief studies were sailing paper airplanes, shooting
spitballs, and throwing plums. However the minor subjects of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies
did receive a little attention.
Sue Griffen joined our intelligent group in the eighth grade with Miss Fannie Mae Summerville as
our capable advisor. Maybe we were more advanced than other students—but even in the eighth grade
we were beginning to add words like romance, puppy love, and sweetheart to our vocabulary.
In the ninth grade Merle Fowler, Claudeen Lashley, and Ray Stephens joined us. This year we ex-
plored another building on our campus. The boys took Agriculture and the girls took Home Economics.
Hyman Burleson joined us in the tenth grade. This year band and football attracted our attention.
Mr. James Jackson and Mrs. Mary Ward Long Horton were our teachers.
Three new students—John Burroughs, Carmela Bria, and Ray Porter—joined us in our Junior year.
We shall never forget the picnic that we gave the Seniors. Didn't we have fun? Miss Lou Finley and
Mrs. Ben Sargent were our teachers.
September 1952—Our Senior year—We thought we were off to year of parties, play, much fun and
a little work. But oh! how wrong we were. We did enjoy the year even if we did have to study. Many
seniors made the head-lines this year. Edward Taylor and Ray Stephens were co-captains of the foot-
ball team. While Jane Hall and Beatrice Gray Harrell were cheerleaders. We shall never forget the
Senior Play, "Lindy Lou." (Continued)
“Washington here we come" seems to have been our motto throughout the year Truly our senior
year has been filled with hard work and plenty of fun. The climax of the year of course was commence-
ment and graduation.
Now that we have done all that we possibly could have done in school, we hope to carry all these
memories with us into the future. We hope to find more happiness with the knowledge we have
acquired.
Class Lawyer—Barbara Carpenter

CLASS PROPHECY
As I glide along in my new automobile, powered by jet propulsion engine, I set my dial on New
York. Upon arrival I find Oscar Spencer, who is now an outstanding movie producer His latest film is
"Just for Tonight," starring Claudeen Lashley. I find that Dorothy Caples is now a Cigarette Girl at the
Stork Club
I suppose everyone has heard of the world famous J. J J Company, owned and operated by Jim-
my Henderson, James Lancaster, and Jack Herndon, who specialize in women's lingerie. Carole (James’s
wife) is assisting them
Joyce Sanders, who is now a famous New York model, is pictured in CHARM modeling the latest
creation in evening wear, which was designed by Aline Finley
It is hard to believe that Norman Richardson is now editor of the NEW YORK TIMES? He is
assisted by Harold Phillips, a former classmate
Rachel Ann Morrow is now traveling with Ringling Brothers Circus. She is their leading acrobat.
Seeing these former classmates in New York reminds me of the remainder of the class. I set the
dial on Washington Upon arrival, whom do I see but the dignified Rodney Allen, a Senator from Ala-
bama. Who is the attractive secretary in his office? None other than Kathleen Pearce.
In the beautiful Tennessee Valley, whom do I see but Jeanmne Pugh playing hop-scotch with her
kindergarten pupils.
Cecil Harrell is rapidly gaining success as an architect. So far only three of his already completed
seven buildings have collapsed
Susan Hitt, the famous concert pianist of Carnegie Hall, has just completed a series of personal
appearances in the dear old Southland Lillian McAlpine Solomon, the famous opera singer, entertains
during intermission with the accompaniment of Beatrice Harrell Their husbands have made a career of
baby sitting.
Carmela Bna, a tobacco auctioneer, has just signed a fifty year contract with Prince Albert
Upon arrival at Eutaw, I find that Belton Walker has made a million in his business establishment,
the Eutaw Wheelbarrow Company.
John Burroughs, now President of the Merchant's and Farmer's Bank seems to be doing quite well
for himself.
Principal E E. Gaither of Greene County High School is replaced by Bud Taylor, a music major
from Union University.
Barbara Ann Carpenter has accepted the position of principal at Eutaw Grammar School. Merle
Fowler has gamed great success in the field of chemistry. Her latest discovery is an insecticide that
kills boring pests
If you remember how timid and shy Betty Roebuck was, you will be amazed to learn that she is
now a stewardess for Eastern Air Lines.
Sue Griffen and Juanita Caples are now supervisors of the Greene County High School Lunchroom.
They are experimenting a dieting menu for the benefit of the teachers at school.
Artis Hamilton has replaced Roy Rogers as King of the Cowboys.
Winnie Jane Hall is now modeling for Airmaid Hosiery Company.
Ray Stephens is now famous for his column in the daily news. "How to Handle Women."
It’s getting late so I had better set the dial for Stuckey Dairy Farm, where I am chief cook and
bottle washer.
