As we sat in the auditorium in
June, 1949 and listened to the 10B
guidance program, the names of
Lanning, Caldwell, Brush, (or was it
Rush?) and Glasser didn't mean a
thing to us. Maybe the girls cried,
“Oh isn't he neat! Wish the girls
could play basketball,” but to most
the names were just that -names.
It wasn’t until mid-September
that we took an interest in the
coaches, and their sports. Why?
Was it because all the upperclass-
men were “hep” and we wanted to
“keep up with the Joneses”? Was it
because we could get out of school
earlier if we bought a ticket? Or
was it the “ham” in us that made us
go out to see our buddies breaking
into the limelight? Probably the
latter.
FOOTBALL
One of our pioneers in sports
was George “Pancho” Hanna, who
in his senior year, kicked an extra
point in the South game. The first
Adams’ conversion in three years!
. . . John Sebek, Ken Frajter, Chuck
Pagen, and Ron Dolciato later quali-
fied to play varsity and helped the
gridders cop some wins . . . Jim
Cloonan wasn’t in too many games
but he had the spirit to fight not only
on the field but in the hospital . . .
Many of us never bothered to go
down to New Castle or Steubenville
to see the “Pros” play and we un-
doubtedly missed some good games.
We made up for those games by giv-
ing some local frays a real turnout.
At Heights we saw the “Tigers”pour
on the steam in the last half in
order to tie us at 12-12. . . Ah yes,
then there was Benedictine. Wasn’t
it Adams that always made it a ‘'bit”
harder for the Bengal s to win a spot
near the top of the Senate standings?
The weatherman must have had
something against us because it
always seemed to rain for the
Bengal tilts. What mud!
In our time the Rebel gridders
never broke any scoring records
but they did cause many an opponent
to break his back to win.
BASKETBALL
We certainly helped swell the
basketball attendance and there’s a
good reason. It was much warmer
in the gym. It’s also possible that
more girls came because they could
see the players “up close.” (Print-
er’s comment: If that’s true then
wrestling should have standing room
only) You’re right, but let me finish
basketball huh?. . . Gene Nazarek,
made himself at home on the court.
In his first season, Gene sank 60
points for a 14.9 average and put in
his bid for Adams “Mr. Basketball”
.. .Team mates Greg “Globetrotter”
Williams, Bob Romanchick and John
Kormos contributed their “sets”
and “layups” for some high scores
. . . The annual games with Garfield
and Shaker will never be forgotten.
. . . Remember that “basketball
game” the boys lost to the faculty,
28-24? Gerald Pollack was high
man for us with 11 points. That was
some show! You must admit the
Ifcbcl Sports
faculty were real sports in that ex-
hibition. . . Certainly we can’t
forget the girls in this basketball
roundup. When we were 12B’s, the
girls with Pat Sanicky’s 24 points
defeated the seniors, 46-16. In our
last semester “the girls” ruined
the 12B’s, 51 - 12 . . , Basketball
played by either the Rebels or the
Rebelettes contributed plenty of ex-
citement and heart breaks, (Print-
er’s comment: Now?) Yes, now.
WRESTLING
Of all the major sports wrestl-
ing had the poorest attendance. Even
with all those paragons of brawn on
the mat, very few of the weaker (?)
sex came to the matches. Strange,
eh what? . . . Again another one of
“the boys” got in the winning way.
In his first season as a grunt and
groan man, Chuck Pagen qualified
for the state tournament. In the
next tourney he finished third. . .
Jerry Silver didn’t hit the state mats
until the 11A when he placed fourth.
In his senior season the “Lone
Ranger” finished one better . . .
Louis Marino, John Donat, Mike
Portnick, and Dan LoPresti supple-
mented Bernie McGroarty’s squads
. . . Got everyone? Let’s see now,
the girls didn’t wrestle, so guess
that’s that.
TRACK AND BASEBALL
During the winter everyone in
J.A. was eager for spring to come
so they could get out and get some
of the air and sun. When it came,
they were out and so were the track
and baseball boys. Too bad more
didn’t watch the cleats fly on the
track and on the diamond. . . Under
mentor Mel Brodt the tracksters
traveled around and picked up some
swell trophies. Traveled is right.
Many a time they went to State and
Miami and brought back wins. . .
Gerald Pollack, Bob Sims, Dick
Lindsay, Bill Harper, and Rolf
Schroeder all donned their harriers
suits to help. Some of them also ran
cross - country, an unappreciated
sport ... Not to be out-done, the
girls have a trackstress to brag
about. Pat Sanicky ran in the
Women’s National Meet in Texas
and came back to “Corlett Corners”
with four medals.
In baseball, the “Rushmen”,
correction, “Brushmen” had the
services of some darn good players
. . . After Nick Lanza was through
washing the duds of the football
players, he managed to come out
and throw some balls. Eugene
Vejsicky, John Kormos and Don
Gibaldi will no doubt benefit from
Coach Brush’s tutelage as did many
Adams alumni.
Plays, clubs, dances and all the
other highlights of high school life
were wonderful, but unequaled were
the thrills, and chills of seeing good
sports playing, good athletics ac-
cording to the book.

“Oh we’re from Adams High School
And no one can be prouder.”
And, as new lOB’s, we really were proud
especially since two of our own class mates,
Ray Linhart and Mike Portnick, were among
these cheerleaders who kept up Adams
spirit.
“CHECKMATE”
So declared Gerry Pollack and Chuck
LaPinta a s they placed third and fourth,
respectively, in the Social Center contest.
Our class was taking honors early.
■CURTAIN GOING UP
Remember Party Night? Dancing in the
gym, games, refreshments, and two big
vaudeville shows — great performances by
Ronald Bridge, Gayle Rodgers, Jean Szatanick
and Dolores Tullar ... As the curtain went
down on the last laugh of “You Can’t Take it
with You”, memories of an hilarious evening
also stuck in our minds. Our contributions
were Vince Romeo and Dick Vesely.
DO - RE - ME - FA .. .
Ronald Bridge, Matilda Ellis, and Bob
Sims limbered up for “first” place awards
in the annual 10th and 11th grade vocal con-
tests while Bill Dapsis blew his way to
victory as a member of the winning trumpet
trio. Another vocalist, Veronica Molino,
appeared in the supporting cast of
“Carmen”.
LOST - one baby fox squirrel. FOUND -
by Pat Sanicky who brought “Johnny” to
Adams where he set up lodging in the
science museum . . . Another noble deed was
accomplished by Florence Kerzner who did
volunteer work with the Selective Service
Board.
“Entre Nous”, a French newspaper,
was introduced to students by the French
Club which wrote and printed the monthly
paper under the editorship of Lillian Carter
. . . Here comes the bride all dressed in a
toga. Remember that wedding a la the
Roman style? It was presented by the Latin
Class with Karol Heiser and Ken Klun as
the prospective s.
SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY?
Joan “snake charmer” Beckar had to
use a little magic to escape injury from a
disastrous hurricane which struck while she
was visiting Florida. Joan returned with
many souvenirs and tales of an exciting trip
. . . Way down South in Egypt land, Lillian
“rough rider” Carter had an unusual ex-
perience. She traveled by camel to see the
Sphinx.
STERLING SILVER MEDAL for eight
years of excellent gardening was achieved
by Carol Remaley. This is the highest
award possible. . . 1,2,3,4 - No, this is not a
calesfhentic - just Lauralee Mares practic-
ing synchronized swimming as a member of
the Monaqua Club.
HERE AND THERE
Sir Chuck LaPinta, Adams chosen dele-
gate to the United Nations, left on a trip to
New York City and the U.N. headquarters. . .
Meanwhile, our class welcomed a new mem-
ber, Judy Ferenczhalmy, a refugee from
Hungary, to become a 100% American in an
all American high school.
ODDS AND ENDS
I saw him in “Holiday”. A picture of
Steve Sekeres was discovered in a feature
on Cleveland. . . “Seeing through a woman”,
helped win Vince Romeo and Dick Vesely a
five dollar prize for a story on the Health
Museum’s transparent woman . . . Copping
two first places in Social Center contests,
Eugene Stecca walked off with a camera and
a five dollar gift certificate.
CONTEST CAPERS
Artists and craftsmen took awards in
an Art Contest with Joe DeLucca winning a
gold key for a piece of jewelry. Other place-

winners were Dick Kolar, Nanette Krobeth
and Lowell Rosenjack ... In the Scholastic
News Contest writers also received honors.
Carmie Amato and Stella Paterno were
awarded gold keys for radio scripts.
Carmie’s original script won her 4th place
in the national contest and ten dollars when
it was published. Certificates of merit were
obtained by Mike Laquatra, Vince Romeo
and Eugene Stecca.
LIVE WELL YOUR PART . . .
Amid tears and traditional yellow
roses, Carmie Amato, Riki Gordon and
Vince Romeo were inducted into the Thes-
pians. All three were connected with that
successful comedy, “John Loves Mary”.
Will anyone ever forget the Country
Fair? Probably not, for how often can you
spend an informal evening in blue jeans, a
flannel shirt and straw hat and have as much
fun as Rebels had. The variety of booths
with dancing in the gym made that Student
Council affair a big success. L auralee
Mares was co-chairman.
“SECRET WEAPON”
The presentation of the Juggernaut in
Maestro Lott’s 1951 “Football Revue” was
the peak of a precisioned piece of showman-
ship. Songs by “Mr. John Adams” himself,
plus support from Mark D. Gordon, A. B.
Richardson, the band, cheerleaders and
majorettes combined to make a long re-
membered high school event. Franklin
Clayton was one of the engineers who helped
design and build that extravaganza, the
Juggernaut.
QUEEN’S ATTENDANTS, Anne Gundzik and
Nancy Manheim, were also on hand during
the football show.
TEA? ANYONE
Taking second place with a dinner set-
ting in the Halle Bros. Table Setting Contest
was Marian Searcy. Norma Jean Boda also
won an honor for her tea table arrangement
. . . During the annual Christmas PTA
meeting, mothers were entertained by an
impressive interpretation of the script,
“The Ragged Cloak,’’with a cast made up of
radio staff actors.

. . . THEREIN HONOR LIES
Two new members, Bernadette Peters
and Eunice Albritten, were admitted into the
National Thespian Society. Both girls also
had a hand in making the play, “Jane Eyre,”
a success. Other cast members included
Carmie Amato, Riki Gordon, Vince Romeo
and Dick Vesely.
BABY FACE
A publicity stunt to promote “Jane
Eyre” was a baby photo contest of cast
members. Winning first place and a pair of
tickets to a preformance was Stella Paterno.
CHARLESTON - CHARLESTON
Reviving the “Roaring Twenties” in the
12B open dance, The Flapper’s Fling, was
the theme for a successful affair. Enter-
tainment was provided by a Charleston ex-
hibition, Dorothy Sanda’s dancing interpre-
tation and the Two Flops and a Flip’s sing-
ing attempt. The trio included Mike
Laquatra, Mike Portnick and Dick Vesely -
co-chairmen were Carl Andreano and
Dorothy Sanda.
SNOW DREAM
Climaxing the social events for the 12B
semester was the “Snow Dream” Prom
whose co-chairmen were Gene Nazarek and

Jean Nose. Dreamy music and colorful
decorations set the mood for an enjoyable
evening. With “Dream” as a theme song
and Arlene Meczulski and Lowell Miller as
Prom king and queen, this was just one
more event that left an impression on our
minds.
LAST YEAR “BIG WHEELS”
As seniors entered their last semester,
clubs and activities were put into capable
hands. Heading the eight leading organiza-
tions were Carl Andreano, Central Com-
mittee; Ronald Bridge, Corridor Patrol;
Chuck LaPinta, Student Council; Eugene
Stecca, National Honor Society and Journal
co-managing editor; Dolores Tullar, Social
Center; and Dick Vesely, Radio Bulletin
Editor, LRO President and Journal co-
managing editor.
PERSONALITY PLUS
In a search for a personality queen, the
Journal selected Gayle Rodgers to represent
Adams in the News Photo Contest. Gayle
won an honorable mention and a fifty dollar
Savings Bond as prize.
ORE BOAT LAUNCHING - As guests
of U.S. Steel, Chuck LaPinta, Eugene Stecca
and Dick Vesely witnessed the launching of
a 6,000 ton ore boat, the Anderson. . . Joan
Nose, Girls Gym Captains Club President,
represented Greater Cleveland High Schools
in a panel discussion on “Opportunities in
Physical Education.”
TAXES TWIRL
Revenue and excise taxes set the scene
for seniors' first social affair. Highlighting
the “Taxes Twirl” was a jitterbug contest.
Co-chairmen of the dance were Veronica
Melino and Paul Schwartz.

Four seniors took first place awards in
the annual vocal contest, while Adams rank-
ed highest in the city. Matilda Ellis and
Sonia Jilek, sopranos; Angela Gentile, alto;
and Ronald Bridge, baritone, were among
those who received firsts.
MORE LOOSE ENDS
Winning top honors in the senior class
was Phil Breen who placed first on the OSU
Psych Test and sixth in the state on the
State Scholarship Test ... In a paper Ohio
sculpture contest, Ray Linhart created the
first place winner entitled “Flower Boy”. . .
Gold Key for a ceramic circus clown was
obtained by Janet Wooley. Other place
winners in the same art exhibit were
Richard Kolar and Nannette Kroboth.
SENIORS MARCH ON
By the time this album goes to press,
our class is just beginning to get into the
swing of senior semester. Several other
affairs including the National Honor
Society induction, Distinction Day, Senior
Prom, and by all means, Commencement,
will linger in our memories of John Adams
High School. In this brief history of the
class of June '52, we have named only a few
members in proportion to its size. Our
purpose, however, will be successful if we
succeed in future years to revive memories
of our friends and events which were so
important during high school years at John
Adams.
