Drawing Up The Plans
( D E I) I C A T I O N )
To the BOARD OF EDUCATION on whose shoulders rest the weary burden
ol meeting the problems of Huron Senior High School, we dedicate the 1952 Tiger.
It is through their untiring efforts that our school is what it is today, and that the
HURON ARENA-AUDITORIUM is a reality instead of a dream.
To take time off from their own crowded lives and serve the public is indeed
a high patriotic service. Their wise and unselfish labors are appreciated by our school
and by the citizens in and about our community. Because we realize that it has been
their aim to make our school days a happy and profitable preparation for the future,
we express our heartfelt thanks to the BOARD OF EDUCATION for their efforts
on our behalf.

Tigers On The Job
(FOREWOK 1) )
While the primary purpose of any school yearbook is to record
school events of the past year, such a record cannot be complete with-
out taking into consideration the traditions, precepts, and ideals of the
community of which the school is a part; for no young people are ever
entirely divorced from the environment in which they grow to maturity.
Choosing to build an appreciative book about the HURON
ARENA-AUDITORIUM, the Tiger Yearbook Staff of Huron Senior
High School, Huron, South Dakota, chose “TIGERS ON THE JOB”
as the theme which best expressed the school’s appreciation. The crew
and performers recall long practices, solemn assemblies, midnight vigils
with books, gay dances, thrilling moments at conference games, and
other events, important and unimportant, that round out an active year.
Huron’s new million-dollar ARENA-AUDITORIUM took the
spotlight in the year’s city activity. The arena can hold the entire popu-
lation of the city and seat half of it. There are 6,068 permanent seats
but the seating capacity can be increased by use of folding chairs. Con-
structed by the Huron school district, the structure is heated by both
radiant heat and forced hot air. The playing floor has two full-size prac-
tice basketball courts, a main basketball court, two badminton courts,
two volleyball courts and two shuffleboard courts.
Formal dedication of the ARENA-AUDITORIUM was held
Thursday evening, March 27, 1952 at 7:30 p.m. Superintendent James
F. Slocum arranged the full program and the Reverend Leslie Pugh
acted as master of ceremonies. Brief talks by Huron civic and educa-
tional leaders including Dr. R. A. Buchanan, president of the Board of
Education; Architect Harold Spitznagel of Sioux Falls; and Robert D.
Lusk, editor and publisher of the Daily Plainsman, were given. The
Huron High School Band conducted by Paul Christensen played dur-
ing the ceremonial, and a combined chorus of one-hundred and fifty
sixth graders sang under the direction of Mrs. Ruth K. Greeves.

Selling Savings Stamps to each Senior High
session was the project of the National Honor
Society this year. NHS members sold stamps
each week. Again this year NHS gave a plaque
to the session room with the highest scholastic
standing. Every six weeks members averaged
grades of each session. The room with the
highest average received the plaque for that
six weeks.
The society was organized in 1921 by
principals of secondary schools, and has grown
to include chapters in Puerto Rico, Hawaii,
and the Phillipines, and local chapters in all
states, totaling over 2300. Our Huron chapter
was granted in 1941. Keeping the member-
ship down to fifteen per cent of the Senior
Class, a student, in order to be eligible, must
be in the upper third of his class, and must
have attended Huron High School for at
least one year.
Candidates for membership are chosen by
vote of the members of the local chapter and
the faculty on the basis of scholarship, service,
leadership, and character.

Key Club is a service club to the school as
Kiwanis, Lions. Rotary, etc., is to the commun-
ity. Although it is sponsored by Kiwanis the
members have no obligation whatsoever to
Kiwanis.
It is not a secret organization or fraternity.
It is composed of members from each class,
chosen for their leadership, character, person-
ality, and scholarship. It is not a local organi-
zation, but an International club with
branches in South America, Canada, and the
United States.
Last spring the Key Club sent Jim Wil-
liams and Norman Peppers to the Internation-
al Convention as official delegates. Jim Swab,
John Sauer, and Roger Bartholow also attend-
ed. The Convention was held in Miami, Flor-
ida. 'I'he all expense paid trip lasted nearly
two weeks. Money was earned in various
ways: washing cars, ushering at commercial
shows that came to town, sponsoring dances.
donations from the local Kiwanis Club and
running a concession stand at the football
games. The Convention next year will be held
in Chicago.

To understand how our democratic govern-
ment works by setting up a mythical 49th state
was the main purpose of the Girl’s State pro-
gram. Groups to represent the eight most im-
portant citie's in the United States were chosen
by the representatives, and elections to city,
state, and national offices as well as organizing
as self-governing citizens were among the
week’s activities.

GAME SUMMARIES
HURON 33 - PIERRE 0
With Roger Anderberg leading the victors with three
touchdowns. Huron overpowered the smaller Pierre
Governors. Dean Oliva and Ross Matson each shared
in the scoring. Al Cropp blocked a punt on the Pierre
10 setting up a Tiger touchdown. Huron was able to
use all the boys who made the trip to Pierre.
HURON 25 - MILLER 6
Huron met a strong Miller team on Dad's Night (a
new feature to Huron). Even after Anderberg returned
the opening kickoff for a touchdown, the Miller Rustlers
came back to tie the score on successful ground plays.
The Timers then began to score with Oliva passing to
Bales. Matson driving off tackle and Oliva intercept-
ing a pass.
HURON 20 - MITCHELL 13
The Tiger's came from behind to stave off a fighting
Mitchell team Oliva scored twice and sophomore Clyde
Shanholtz starting for the first time made it one more.
Oliva's punting was responsible for protecting the Tigers
lead.
HURON 13 - MADISON 0
The Tiger's concluded a successful ' 7iger Day" with
a shut out over the Madison Bulldogs With Ron Arte-
man and John Winkle recovering Madison fumbles deep
in the Bulldog's territory. Bales and Anderberg picked
up the touchdowns. Huron again played tough defem.e
holding Madison on their one foot line.
HURON 6 - WATERTOWN 0
Huron's lone touchdown came in the first half by
Dean Oliva. Several times throughout the game the
Arrows were within the Tiger's five yard line but failed
to score against an especially strong Tiger defense.
Statistically Watertown had Huron 11 first downs to 4
first downs
HURON 8 - SIOUX FALLS 27
Sioux Falls scored twice in the first half and once
in the third quarter before Huron's Al Cropp stopped
Duane Leach in the Warriors end zone. Oliva then
added a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Injuries hurt
the Tigers chances when three starters were sidelined.
HURON 27 - BROOKINGS 20
Playing its finest offense of the season the Tigers
defeated the Brookings Bobcats. Huron scored first with
Anderberg and were out ahead the remainder of the
game. An 82 yard run by Don Schmidt after intercept-
ing a pass decided the outcome of the game. Oliva put
on the final touchdown in the 4th quarter.
HURON 13 - ABERDEEN 35
f\ keyed up Aberdeen team hit the Tiger's fast and
hard causing fumbles which proved costly to Huron. The
Tiger's who scored only twice, on a reverse by Bales
and a pass from Matson to Schmidt, lost their second
game of the season.
HURON 26 - YANKTON 7
The final game was played in the coldest weather
of the season. The Tiger’s went to an early lead on a
CO yard jaunt by Anderberg. Then with Bales and And-
erberg hitting through the line for two more. Matson
threw a 40 yard pass to Schmidt for the final touch-
down. Yankton’s only score came on a pass in the fourth
period.

The Huron City School Athletic Program, introduced in 1928,
is a very successful one. It enables every boy in the fourth grade
through the twelfth grade to participate in competitive football, bas-
ketball, volleyball and track.
The field of sports is one of the most important phases of school
life. Beginning in physical education class, the students are trained
and coached for participation in various sport's. The endeavor of the
school and the coaching staff is to strengthen growth by represen-
tation and cooperation in the numerous sport activities. Being able
to bear defeat as well as to share in the glory of victory, both players
and students develop loyalty and school spirit. Thus the memories
of athletics remain with the graduates.

To everyone in Huron High School, an important phase of
school life is filled by the ever-exciting field of sports. Knowing
the glorious joy of winning as well as the way to bear loss are
the emotions shared by both the students and the players that
develops a common bond of loyalty which increases with each
game. Backing our team to victory and building a staunch de-
votion for our school, and all it stands for — it is for these things
that we fight.

One of the most colorful additions to the
Huron High School athletic contests is the
mass cheering of Tiger fans led by the Huron
High pep band and cheer-leaders, providing
inspiration for the players and enthusiasm
among the spectators.
The pep band has also done its share of
backing the cheering section and is consider-
ed one of the best in South Dakota. Many of
the school yells are supported by a musical
background furnished by the pep band.

‘ Hold that pose.” Everyone is familiar with
these words of the student artist.
The Art Club is an informal organization in
which the student may participate more freely
than in the formal instruction of the ai t class.
It is the purpose of the art department to have
the students experiment with as many mediums
and procedures as possible and familiarize him-
self with the world of art. By so doing he lays
a foundation for further study of art in advanced
schools and learns in what direction his ability
lies.
Inasmuch as good citizenship should be one
of the products of the art class, time and effort
have been given to such projects as those of the
Junior Red Cross, the Red Cross drive, and the
sale of American Legion poppies.
Because an art department should also an-
swer the need of the students who does not seek
a career in art but who wants the understanding
and natural joy that comes from working with
color and form, provision is made for that type
of student. As part of such a program an art club
has been formed in which the student may woik
as he pleases with the inspiriation of other
students working around him and with the help
of an instructor. This work has largely taken
the form of craft work and the application of de-
sign and color. It is asked that only those who
have had a foundation in junior high school or
senior high school for art work be members
of the club. It is informal in organization and
procedure and has been the source of much
pleasure on the part of art-minded high school
students.

One of the highlights of the year for the
“Romanus Hodierni” Club (Romans of today)
was the Roman banquet held in the spring for
all past and present Latin students.
The Roman Banquet, served by slaves, in
true classic style, with the diners on couches,
climaxed the year’s work. Elaborate decora-
ROMAN BANQUET
tions portraying many Roman buildings and
decorations ornamented the banquet tables.
Latin dishes were served to add further and
more completely to the dinner.
“Sempre Pro Ceasare” (Always for Caesar)
is the motto of the club which was organized
by Miss Wilma Bliss. Under her direction its
interests have been extended. To carry the
torch of classical civilization to the modern
world is the aim of the first and second year
Latin members of the Junior Classical League,
a division of the National Classical League.
About sixty members of the Fraternitas
Latina attended meetings during the year.
Programs, combining feast, fiction, and fun,
presented different phases of Roman history,
life and customs. Influences of Latin on our
language were also pointed out. Latin songs
were sung and programs were conducted with
Latin games.

With this exclamation, President Shirley

club in room 315 every other Friday afternoon
during the filth hour.
After the business meetings, which are
conducted in Spanish, the members partici-
pated in the programs consisting of Spanish
songs, records, games and plays, all wonder-
ful fun and at the same time teaching the
language and aiding the students to acquire
a native accent.
To acquire a native accent and to under-

the dual purpose toward which the Spanish

Assisting Mr. Edward W. Barth, junior-
senior high school librarian, is the Library Club.
“How to use the High School Library” is a sub-
ject well worth knowing. Most student-mem-
bers of the Library Club aim to learn as much
of this work as time spent on duty will permit.
There is a variety in a day's work, checking,
cleaning, mending, and shelving books and mag-
azines, typing, issuing due slips, maintaining
attendance records, miscellaneous errands and
helping the students find material. These and
all other opportunities to serve the school con-
stitute the purpose of the club.
As a foundation for serving students are
expected to know the Library rules, the Appren-
tice Code, the systm of cataloging, and how to
us the card catalog, the Reader’s Guide, and
the general reference books. Proper deportment
and good scholarship are also indexes to ade-
quate service, and prerequisite for membership.
Reward for service to users of the library
consists in a general acquaintance with the var-
ious kinds of materials and how to use them,
plus a credit of four points per school year.
84
The spirit of cooperation, thoughtfulness, and
friendliness among the L.C.’s is making the li-
brary an attractive place in which to study. To
the extent that those who use the library are
willing to cooperate in just so far can the gratis
service accomplish its purpose.
Club meetings are held once a month after
school for instruction and special activities. At-
tendance of these meeting is required.
From time to time the L. C.’s have prepared
posters and exhibits featuring new and special
classes of books, seasons, holidays and anniver-
saries.
In living we look for the equal chance;
“books help to make it.”
Few members of this organization are train-
ing themselves to become actual librarians and
to work in libraries but the knowledge that are
accumulating in the techniques of the library
will be valuable to them in the future in their
chosen vocation.

Life began at three o’clock for the Tiger staff
members who met in the Journalism room, to

Those who survived the battle will agree that
it wasn’t so bad after all. We hope you enjoy

Mr. Arthur Piner
Service station attendants, a rubber welder.
and a men’s clothing salesman are a few of the
jobs now held by students in Arthur P. Piners’
trades and industries class, new in Huron High
this year.
“Trades and industries is not a truly descrip-
tive name for the course,” said Mr. Piner. ‘‘A
better name is ‘Cooperative Part-Time School
and Work Program in Diversified Occupations,’
but this is a little long!”
To give supervised training for a definite
occupation which can be used after graduation
is the immediate aim of the new course, Mr.
Piner explained. The ultimate aim is to produce
trained employable citizens in the community.
Although the students are paid wages, earning
money is not the primary objective of the course.
In the trades and industries class the boys
are given general instruction concerning topics
such as appearance on the job, and specific in-
formation for every student’s particular field.
The ten boys enrolled in the course attend
school until 2:00 P.M. when they are excused for
their jobs. Two credits are given toward grad-
uation.
At the beginning of the course every stu-
dent took a General Aptitude Test Battery, to
find out what type of work he is best fitted for.
The new program offers to the employers the
benefits of a reserve of trained help, the chance
to train help on the job, getting employees who
are interested in their work, and are informed
about it. Mr. Piner pointed out that students
enjoy their class work because their individual
aptitudes and interests are considered, and they
have contacts with businessmen and have on-
the-job experience.

Driver Education Theory ... Miss Wava K. Larsen
Mr. Delbert C. Reutter
‘To teach students the fundamentals of
driving is the aim of this course,” stated Mr.
Fuglsby. The actual driving is done in the
student’s study periods, and a unit of study on
drivers’ training is given in the English and
speech classes by Miss Wava K. Larsen, and
Delbert C. Reutter.
To drive seven hours and observe 21 are
lhe course requirements for each student Mr.
Fuglsby said. The actual driving is broken into
steps such as: inspection of the engine, starting
the car, shifting in low, signaling and stop-
ping in low, etc. The “classroom on wheels”
is equipped with dual controls, and an auxil-
iary brake and clutch on the right side for
the instructor’s use.
Since students turn of legal driving age
when they are Sophomores and because of
limited facilities, the course is being offered
only to Sophomores. The non-drivers are
taught fundamentals the first six weeks and
then all Sophomores start advanced work.
The Pontiac car is being furnished by the
Wilson-Fuller Company. The American Auto-
mobile Association sponsors drivers’ training
courses in high schools all over the nation.
Mr. Fuglsby, a native of Oldham, received
his B.S. degree at South Dakota State College,
Ins M.S. at the University of Minnesota, and
has had 80 hours of drivers’ training instruc-
tion from the AAA.

YALTY SONG
We’re loyal to you, Huron High.
We’re Orange and Black, Huron High;
We’ll back you to stand
’Gainst the best in the land,
For we know you have sand, Huron High.
So smash through that line, Huron High,
We’re backing you all, Huron High;
Our team is our fame protector, on boys,
For we expect a victory for you, Huron High.
