Ruth Kingdon Greeves
Personality is a vague, intangible thing to talk about on paper. But how real, how.tremendous
it is in life all around us! Let us use two different sources of water to illustrate the personalities of Mrs.
Ruth Kingdon Greeves and Mr. Gerald Scott Dexter.
Mr. Dexter’s personality is like a mountain stream. It sings and tumbles down the hills into the
lake and wherever we touch it there is a supply of fresh pure water. Whether you meet him on the
mountain top or down at the Jake, he is always sparkling, always singing. His presence chases gloom
and inspires us to go joyfully along with him. Where he leads, all follow; when he smiles, all smile; and he
is always ready to stimulate us and quench our thirst by sharing with us all he has.
4
Down by the lake into which the mountain stream tumbles is a spring. It illustrates Mrs. Gref
personality. It is more quiet than the singing mountain stream, but from its bubbling depths comes 'C
coldest, most refreshing drink. The depth and strength of many quiet lives are a joy and blessing
shared with others. Mrs. Greeves is the deep spring personality. She is a comforter, a helper.. She is sym-
pathetic. helpful and understanding.

Superintendent
“Life is a glorious adventure. If you face your problems
aggressively, they are half solved already. If you aspire to
larger responsibilities, they will meet you half way. Religion,
science, business, education-----all are looking for the student
who dares face life, to attack rather than defend.”

Life began at three o'clock for the Tiger staff mem-
bers who met in the Journalism room, to carry out the
endless amount of tasks necessary to bring the Tiger to
the rest of the students. Those who survived the battle
will agree that it wasn t so bad after all. We hope you
enjoy your Tiger as much as we enjoy publishing it.
Continuing the endeavor to make the high school proud

Vocational Agriculture is a four year course
in Huron High School. This department has had
an increase in enrollment each year since the
course was established in the fall of 1948.
The students in this department engage in
practical farming for experience and profit. The
total income from these individually owned en-
terprises was $8904.55 in 1950.
Five agriculture study trips are taken each
year by students in the agriculture classes in-
cluding: one to Sioux Falls; two to State Col-
lege; and two within the district.
The Future Farmers of America is a national
organization of boys studying vocational agri-

"Earn and Learn" is the inotto of the Distributive
Education Class of 1951. This work-experience pro-
gram is sponsored by the George Dean Act. Seniors
who enroll in the course receive one credit for
work done in stores and offices, and one credit
for class work. A minimum of 15-hours of on-the
job training for each school week is required.
The pay per hour varies with the job. During the
first five months this year the class earned 85205.12
for 9805 hours of work, an average per hour of S.53.
The Distributive Education Class does its share
of promoting school spirit. For the past ten years
dinners have been given for both the football and
the basketball teams at the end of their respective
seasons. The group sponsored a bake sale on Tiger
Day and entered a float in the Tiger Day Parade.
In April a style show was presented before the
student body during a special assembly for the
occasion. Other class projects were: (1) Attending
the National Hereford Show; (2) Field tripping
through Eilers’; (3) Attending a NWPS all-electric
cooking school demonstration; and (4) Attending
the A. A. U. W. Art Exhibit.

One of the highlights of the year for the “Ro-
manus Hodiemi” Club (Romans of today) was the
Roman banquet held in the spring for all past and
present Latin students.
The Roman Banquet, served by slaves, in true
classic style, with the diners on couches, climaxed
the year’s work. Elaborate decorations portraying
many Roman buildings and decorations ornamented
the banquet tables. Latin dishes were served to
add further and more completely to the dinner.
“Sempre Pro Ceasare” (Always for Caesar) is
the motto of the club which was organized by Miss
Wilma Bliss. She was chosen for this sponsorship
and under her direction its interests have been
extended. To carry the torch of classical civiliza-
tion to the modern world is the aim of the first and
second year Latin members of the Junior Classical
League, a division of the National Classical League.
About sixty members of the Fraternitas Latina
attended meetings during the year. Programs, com-
bining feast, fiction, and fun, presented different
phases of Roman history, life and customs. Influ-
ences of Latin on our language were also pointed
out. Latin songs were sung and programs were
conducted with Latin games.

Se abre la sesion!
Se abre la sesion!
With this exclamation. President Lena Meyer
opened each meeting of the Spanish club in room
315 every other Friday afternon during the fifth
hour.
After the business meetings, which are con-
ducted in Spanish, the members participated in the
programs consisting of Spanish songs, records,
games and plays, all wonderful fun and at the same
time teaching the language and aiding the students
to acquire a native accent.
To acquire a native accent and to understand
better the history of their language is the dual
purpose toward which the Spanish Club is striving.
Acting as advisor to the group. Miss Dana Harlow
sponsored the colorful St. Valentine’s Tea in
honor of the parents of the Spanish students.
At Christmas time a special fiesta was held fea-
turing the traditional posadas of Mexico and a
pinata, in this case, a brightly decorated shopping
bag. Breaking it, the ninos brought down a shower
of gifts and treats.

Assisting Mr. Harry Jones, junior-senior high
school librarian, is the Library Club. “How to use
the High School Library” is a subject well worth
knowing. Most student-members of the Library
Club aim to learn as much of this work as time
spent on duty will permit. There is a variety in a
day’s work, checking, cleaning, mending, and
shelving books and magazines, typing, issuing due
slips, maintaining attendance records, miscellaneous
errands and helping the students find material.
These and all other opportunities to serve the school
constitute the purpose of the club.
As a foundation for serving students are ex-
pected to know the Library rules, the Apprentice
Code, the system of cataloging, and how to use
the card catalog, the Reader’s Guide, and the gen-
eral reference books. Proper deportment and good
scholarship are also indexes to adequate service.
and prereouiste for membership.
Reward for service to users of the library con-
sists in a general acquaintance with the various
kinds of materials and how to use them, plus a
credit of four points per school year.
The spirit of cooperation, thoughtfulness, and
friendliness among the L. C.’s is making the library
an attractive place in which to study. To the extent
that those who use the library are willing to co-
operate in just so far can the gratis service accom-
plish its purpose.
Club meetings are held once a month after
school for instruction and special activities. Attend-
ance of these meetings is required.
From time to time the L. C.’s have prepared
posters and exhibits featuring new and special
classes of books, seasons, holidays and anniversaries.
In living we look for the equal chance; “books
help to make it.”
Few members of this organization are training
themselves to become actual librarians and to work
in libraries but the knowledge that are accumula-
ting in the techniques of the library will be valuable
to them in the future in their chosen vocation.

“Hold that pose.' Everyone is familiar with
these words of the student artist.
The Art Club is an informal organization in
which the student may participate more freely
than in the formal instruction of the art class. It
is the purpose of the art department to have the
students experiment with as many mediums and
procedures as possible and familiarize himself
with the world of art. By so doing he lays a foun-
' dation for further study of art in advanced schools
and learns in what direction his ability lies.
Inasmuch as good citizenship should be one of
the products of the art class, time and effort have
been given to such projects as those of the Junior
Red Cross, the Red Cross drive, and the sale of
American Legion poppies.
Because an art department should also answer
the need of the student who does not seek a career
in art but who wants the understanding and natural
joy that come from working with color and form,
provision is made for that type of student. As part
of such a program an art club has been formed
in which the student may work as he pleases with
the inspiration of other students working around
him and with the help of an instructor. This work
has largely taken the form of craft work and the
application of design and color. It is asked that
only those who have had a foundation in junior
high school or senior high school for art work be
members of the club. It is informal in organization
and procedure and has been the source of much
pleasure on the part of art-minded high school
students.

HURON 20—PIERRE 13
The Tigers opened their season by beating one of the best
teams put out by Pierre High School. Huron was never be-
hind as they scored just before the half. Roger Anderberg
was the whole show for the Tigers, by gaining 210 yards for
the night.
HURON O-SIOUX FALLS 46
The Warriors completely swamped the Tigers with their
huge line and depth in reserves. Roger Anderberg's deter-
mined efforts were in vain as all the Warriors were tough.
Norquist and Arndt were the only standouts in Huron's
defense.
72
“Actions Speak Plainer Than Words”
HURON 0—ABERDEEN 53
Haying been held to but one touchdown in the first half,
the Aberdeen Eagles broke loose with 47 points in the last
half. Huron's only threat was stopped at the one yard line.
Anderberg’s four trys from the three yard line couldn’t pene.
irate the stubborn Aberdeen defense.
HURON 0—MADISON 33
Even their newly-applied split-T couldn't save the Tiger
Homecoming from a shutout. It was Madison's passing that
spelled destruction for the Tigers as Anderberg again was
Huron's only consistent ground gainer.
HURON 13—WINNER 19
Stepping out of the conference, the Tigers showed their
scoring punch only to be defeated by a good Warrior team.
Huron's chance to win was stopped as a last minute touch-
down was called back on a penalty.
HURON 34—YANKTON 13
By hitting their scoring stride again. Huron's power dropped
on the Yankton Bucks on the Bucks' Homecoming. Ander-
berg scored 32 points for the Tigers as the whole Tiger team
looked the best of the season.
HURON 14—MITCHELL 14
The Tigers spoiled the respectively tough Kernals with a
surprising tie. If Huron's passing performance had clicked the
Tigcra would not have had to fight from behind. With 2 sec-
onds left, Huron scored and added the extra point with the
hard driving efforts of Anderberg and Stephenson.
HURON 6-BROOKINGS 20
The Tigers held the potent Bobcats to a lone touchdown
in three quarters, before the ’Cats broke away for two more.
In the waning minutes Phil Stephenson romped 69 yards on
the kick-off to set up Huron's only touchdown. The score
came on a pass from Anderberg to Schmidt in the end zone.
HURON 6—WATERTOWN 26
The Huron Tigers just didn't have the power to stop .the
surprising Watertown Arrows. Their only score came from
Rog Anderberg as he ran back an Arrow punt for 45 yards.
Twice Huron was within the six yard line but couldn't score.
Jim Arndt playing his last game for the Orange and Black,
again stood out on defense.

The Huron City School Athletic Program, introduced in 1928,
is a very successful one. It enables every boy in the fourth grade
through the twelfth grade to participate in competitive football, bas-
ketball, volleyball and track. The four grade schools have four
coaches, the junior High has two coaches, and the Senior High has
two coaches.
The field of sports is one ol the most important phases ol
school life. Beginning in physical education class, the students are
trained and coached for participation in various sports. The endeavor
of the school and the coaching staff is to strengthen growth by
representation and cooperation in the numerous sport activities. Heim',
able to bear defeat as well as to share in the glory of victory, both
plavers and students develop loyally and school spirit. I Ims the
memories of athletics remain with the '.'radunlcs.

To everyone in Huron High School, an important phase of
school life is filled by the ever-exciting field of sports. Knowing the
glorious joy of winning as well as the way to bear loss are the emotions
shared by both the students and the players that develops a common
bond of loyalty which increases with each game. Backing our team
to victory and building a staunch devotion for our school, and all
it stands for — it is for these things that we fight.

Presenting a plaque to the session room having
the highest average in grades was the project of the
National Honor Society. Every six weeks NILS
members averaged grades of each Senior High ses-
sion. The room with the highest average received
the plaque for that six weeks.
The society was organized in 1921 by principals
of secondary schools, and has grown to include
chapters in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the Philli-
pines, and local chapters in all states, totaling over
2300. Our Huron chapter was granted in 1941.
Keeping the membership down to fifteen per cent
of the Senior Class, a student, in order to be elig-
ible, must be in the upper third of his class, and
must have attended Huron High School for at least
one year.
Candidates for membership are chosen by vote
of the members of the local chapter and the fa-
culty on the basis of scholarship, service, leadership,
and character.

LOYALTY SONG
Were Joyal to you, Huron High;
We’re Orange and Black, Huron High;
We’ll back you to stand
Gainst the best in the land,
For we know you have sand, Huron High.
So smash through that line, Huron High,
We’re backing you all, Huron High,
Our team is our fame protector, on boys,
For we expect a victory for you, Huron High.
