Service, loyalty, and merit in the persons with whom we work con-
tribute greatly to making our school days enjoyable.
Those of us who have worked with him know that Mr. Guy E. Hatch,
our hardworking print shop instructor, possesses these qualities. His
superb work on student publications and the excellent printing he
does on programs and posters merit the appreciation and respect which
the entire student body holds for him.
Mr. Hatch prepared himself to teach by attaining a Bachelor of
Arts Degree from Kansas State Teachers College. He came to El Cen-
tro in September, 1927, to teach wood shop, print shop, and mechanical
drawing. He was Junior Class Advisor for 15 years and has been Senior
Class Advisor for the past 4 years.
Therefore to show our respect and gratitude for his long service, we,
the students of Central, gratefully dedicate the La Solana of 1951 to
Mr. Guy E. Hatch.

No wheels would turn smoothly without the Board of Trustees,
which has worked for the good of the school. They are responsible for
our excellent equipment, our new building, and the maintenance of our
buildings and attractive grounds.
We are especially pleased with our new Study Hall and Library
and wish to express our appreciation to the board for the new building.
Fay Measuies, Registrar; Mary Womack, Attendance Clerk
No wheels would turn at all if it had not been for the work of Mrs.
Measures and Mrs. Womack this year. For who in school has not had
to go to the office at some time and ask for help or the necessary ex-
cuse blank? Not only absentee reports but keeping track of programs
and classes have kept our office staff very busy.
No matter how busy they are, no one ever received a discourteous
answer, and we know that many times students need not have bothered
such busy people.
We want to take this opportunity to thank them for their patience
and their help all through the year.
The wheels of our school would stop turning if it were not for the
capable and efficient work of the office staff. The office staff under
the direction of Mr. Gresham, Assistant Superintendent, has given us
just the smooth running office that every school needs.
Any student who ever had to visit the office was always met cour-
teously, and was always served with the greatest of efficiency.
We are proud of our staff and their service to us is appreciated.
SEATED: Dix Thomas, Auditor; Joanne Thompson, Bookkeeper.
STANDING: Pat Finn, Secretary to the Superintendent; Helen Slovak,
Attendance Clerk; Roxy Burnham, Swithchboard Operator.

This year Central was led by two dynamic leaders. For all their
shortness in height, they have proved to be giants in efficiency and
leadership. The job of conducting assemblies was a snap for that South-
ern “Rebel” with a love for filibuster, Hunter Charlton. Kathy Walper,
the well-known redhead whose label for almost anyone was either
“Scrounge” or “.Buster” also showed her ability for leading assemblies
and getting things done.X.

LEFT TO RIGHT: Bob Davis, Athletics; Carolyn Gattis, Halls and Grounds; Janet
Strobel, Girls’ Welfare; Mary Sones, Publicity; Lyndon Ward, Publications; Kath-
lyn Walper, Girls’ Vice President; Hunter Charlton, President; Bill Tyler, Boys’
Vice President; Glenda Haskell, Secretary; Peggy Norris, Treasurer; Bob Clem-
ents, Boys’ Welfare; Danny Nufl'er, House Manager.
Order! Order! Those were words often heard at Commissioners’
meetings this year. Led by the dynamic Hunter Charlton, this year’s
Commissioners have done a fine job of operating the student govern-
ment.
First on the program for the year was the sale of student body
cards. The Commissioner-sponsored contest for the sale of the cards
brought hundreds of students flocking to buy.
At the meetings of the Imperial Valley Association of Student Coun-
c'ls, the representatives of Central were instrumental in obtaining ex-
change assemblies with other schools and a critic board for judging Val-
ley plays.
Not one of the Commissioners will ever forget that blue Monday of
last January when, upon walking into the office to fetch the piggy bank,
the treasurer found it shattered into a million pieces and lying on the
floor. The $3.91 which had been diligently collected for tardiness to
meetings had been stolen. This was almost too much, but the gallant
Commissioners rallied under the cry, “Remember the pig!” Some kind
soul donated a treasure chest bank, complete with $3.91, to the group.
Thanks to the Commissioners and the people who elected them, this
year of 1950 and ’51 will be a never-to-be-forgotten page in Central’s his-
tory.

The Class of ’51 has successfully steered through four years of
life at Central High School. During these four years the class has
proved to be a strong, fine axle for the wheel of school life to turn on.
This year’s seniors got off to a remarkable start in high school with
their outstanding freshman assembly in 1948.
In 1949, their sophomore year, they were influential in all Central’s
organizations. A number of the boys had already begun to make names
for themselves in sports.
In 1950, their junior year, they presented the thrilling mystery-
comedy, “Home Sweet Homicide.” Their Junior-Senior Prom with an
“Aloha” theme was lauded as one of the finest ever.
This year the seniors have really kept the rolling at Central smooth.
“Inner Willy,” the senior play, was noted by critics as “the best presen-
tation ever given at Central.” The senior dress-up day was truly a treat
to the other students.
Many of the seniors shone individually in the fields of forensics,
journalism, dramatics, and sports.
Here’s hoping that the members of the Class of ’51 may roll through
life as smoothly as they have rolled through their years at Central High.

O^icenA
In the fall of 1950 a group of bewildered students
entered the halls of Central Union High School to begin
their high school life. With looks of expectation on their
faces they walked about the
campus anticipating their
next four years.
It wasn’t long till everyone
became conscious of their
presence. They worked hard
to win the beautiful placque
given to the class who bought
the highest percentage of
Student-body cards. They
proved they could take their
place at Central along with
the rest of the high and migh-
ty.
Watch for those freshmen!
They’ll go a long way in the
next three years!

El Centro Chapter, Future Farmers of America
This year the El Centro Future Farmers have successfully carried
out many goals and ideas. We have participated in three state and local
judging contests; attended three fairs; attended state, regional, and
sectional meetings and took an active part; had sectional winners in
public speaking and the annual cooperative quiz contest; sent two dele-
gates, Werner Locher and Fred Binggeli, to the National Convention at
Kansas City; and sponsored a dance in cooperation with the Future
Homemaking department here at CUHS. The ribbons accumulated by
contest teams and individual and fair exhibitors is evidence of hard
work, considerable effort, and jobs well done. We like to learn by doing.

Thespians, like many other school or
ganizations, came into full swing this year.
The membership increased from 8 to around
34 before the year was over. Membership is
attained by participating in plays, helping
backstage, and various other activities con-
nected with dramatics.
Among the several plays given this
year were “Inner Willie”, the Senior Class
Play; “Ghost Train”, the Junior Class
play; “Balcony Scene”, a one-act play pre-
sented at the Pasadena Play House; and
the Junior Thespian one-act play.
This year, for the first time, the Thes-

A.M.P.S. has been guided by its student
leaders with a minimum of faculty help.
The A.M.P.S. has set up a fine pub-
lic address system on the football field
and in the auditorium. The organization
has tripled the use of motion pictures
and other visual aids in the school. Its
members have performed many services
for the community by serving as tech-
nicians and projectionists.
After a highly successful year, the
boys are looking forward to an even bet-
ter year next year.

One of the outstanding differ-
ences in our school paper this year
was its change of name. This was
brought about by the fact that both
the high school and junior college
were able to put out separate publi-
cations and thus the old name “War-
rior-Nomad” was no longer appro-
priate. “The Shield” was the name
selected by the student body.
The traditional high ideals of the
paper were continued, and the ap-
pearance was improved by the addi-
tion of more pictures and drawings.
The first page of the semi-monthly
publication was given over to the
important news events of the past
and future; the second contained
editorials and interesting feature
stories; the third consisted of social
events and fashions; and the fourth
page was the ever important sports
page. The total result was an in-
teresting paper.

Central Union High School is proud of its great band.
To Mr. Huddleston, Director of the Band, goes much
credit for making this band such a good one. At the Mu-
sic Festival in El Centro on April 7th the band received
a rating of one. This high rating entitled the band to par-
ticipate in the Southern California Music Festival at Ful-
lerton on April 21st.
The Band has taken part in many community parades, including
the Christmas Parade and the Bond Parade on March 5th. The mer-
chants through a Band Day donated money so that the band could go
to Fullerton.
The school takes this opportunity to thank the band for its fine
work and to thank Mr. Huddleston for his time in making it that way.

The coaches at Central Union High School this year have been
affected by the war emergency. After Christmas Coach “Hub” Foote
replaced Coach Carl Lewis who was recalled to active duty in the Air
Force.
Coach Harold Church has been in charge of football, basketball and
baseball. Even though Central did not always win, Coach Church has
always given his best.
Coach Foote was in charge of “B” and “C” Basketball, and of the
“A”, “B”, and “C” Track Teams.

Our team had worked together for a long time, putting in many
hours of practice, and Coach Church worked wonders with it. Just a
few short weeks after school had begun we played Yuma and suffered
our first defeat of the season by a score of 19 to 6.
Holtville, a heavy and powerful team, was defeated once again by
a score of 12 to 0.
One of the most thrilling games of the year was played at Imperial
where the score was tied at 7 to 7, the only tie of the season.
We then traveled to Calexico where we eked out a narrow victory
8 to 6.
Next we traveled to the north end of the Valley where we fell at
the hands of a powerful Brawley team 15 to 0.
Holtville played a return game here and we redeemed ourselves
with a score of 18 to 0.
On our return trip to Calexico we again won 7 to 0.
The only coast game on our schedule was then played and we won
by a score of 6 to 0.
On a hot and sunny Thanksgiving Day we had only one barrier be-
tween us and the championship—the Brawley Wildcats. After a hard
and well fought game Central bowed to Brawley 18 to 6.

Ralph Smalling proved himself to be
mighty rugged this year. Ralph did such
a fine job that he was chosen All-Valley.
Ralph is a senior so he won’t be back
next year to show his ability in all the
sports he participated in.

Bill Cornett, whose teeth-rattling
tackles were the bane of opposing backs,
was selected on the All-Valley this sea-
son because of his consistently fine per-
formance in the pivot position on both
offense and defense. Bill, who is a sen-
ior, will be missed next year.

The El Centro Bonecrushers began the football season in fine fash-
ion by defeating the Yuma freshmen by the score of 24-0. In the open-
ing game of the Junior varsity league, the Crushers eked out a 6-0 win
over Calexico. Then the team journeyed to Brawley and came back
with a defeat against them. Brawley won, 12-0. In the next week’s game
with Holtville, the team engaged in a scoring affair. They came home

with a 39-25 win. The next game was with
the Imperial team. Our team won this
one by a score of 19-0. The following
week the Calipatria Hornets came to El
Centro for a crucial game with the Bone-
crushers. In a game that many agreed
was the best the Bonecrushers played
all season long, Calipat won by a score
of 13-0. The Crushers closed the season
in much the same fashion as they began
it by beating Douglass, 25-6.
The Bonecrushers placed five men on
the Post-Press All-Valley teams this
year. On the first team were Bob Clem-
ents at end, and Jim Loeffel at center.
On the second team were Keith Courter
at guard. Bill Durkee at tackle, and Rich-
ard Ellis at Halfback.

Bob Clements was another Bonecrusher
to be selected on the All-Valley eleven. Play-

The 1950 Spartan team completed another season under the guid-
ance of Coach Harold Church, taking third place in league competition.
The year started with many inexperience ! men, but as the season pro-
gressed the boys began to round into shape.
After switching his proteges to the different positions, Coach Church
selected the best combination possible. Kenny Woodward, Ray Gillespie,
Tom Schauwecker, Carl Dupsloff, and Ralph Smalling composed the
Spartan Varsity.
Carl Dupsloff was the only El Centro eager to receive the All-Val-
ley award. Carl notched 160 points for Central in the 20-game schedule.
Carl, a senior, had been trying for the dream team and succeeded in
earning his well-deserved position as guard this year.
Chief Guy Woodward, of the El Centro Police Department, pre-
sented Carl with a trophy as the outstanding player of the year. Carl
is the first player to receive this award.

The Spartan “B” team tied for second place in league play after
making a desperate attempt to knock off the championship Calexico

tively.
Other Sparts to see considerable action were Fred Fankhauser,

lost its first game to Santa Ana by a score of 9 to 0. Then on March
20th the team lost to Covina by 5-4.
On March 22 El Centro defeated Brawley 5-1, and on March 26

IMPERIAL IRRIGATION DISTRICT — PUBLICLY-OWNED
WATER and POWER
Your Power System .
Your District . . .
Imperial Irrigation District, a publicly-owned
utility, was organized in 1911. It is the largest irri-
gation district in the United States, with combined
assets of more than $55,000,000, and serving more
than 30,000 customers.
Main sources of electrical
rgy for the farms,
homes and industries of Imperial Valley come from
hydro-electric plants on the All-American Canal, a
steam electric generating plant, a diesel plant, and
from Parker Dam on the Colorado River.
W/IWWW
Your Water System . . .
Your irrigation system is the largest in
the United States. All of your water comes
from the Colorado River. It is diverted into the 80-mile long All-American Canal at
Imperial Dam and distributed to the farmers of Imperial Valley through more than
1700 miles of main and lateral canals. Drainage is provided by more than 1300 miles
of deep drains and lateral drains, making a total of more than 3,000 miles of canals
and drains maintained by your District.
More than 1,000 trained employees daily bring you the water and power that is
the life blood of the Imperial Valley.
It is well to remember that the continuing development of our great Imperial
Valley throughout the years has been contingent on the development of your Imperial
Irrigation District. The bringing into production of additional acres, and the electri-
fication of rural and urban areas, have been dependent on long range, intelligent
planning by your District.

Sooner perhaps than most realize, the stu-
dents whose pictures adorn these pages
will have become adults, married, and have
families of their own. In the process they
will acquire land, build houses, and found
homes.
For this reason we invite each of them to
become acquainted with the service and
protection our company has offered to gen-
erations of those who came before them.
We invite them, through our assistance, to
familiarize themselves with the practices
observed in dealing with real estate, to
