MRS. BELLE McGINNIS
IN MEMORIAM
We. the staff of the 1950 EL OROSO, wish to offer
this book to the memory of our beloved Mrs. Belle Mc-
Ginnis. Through her tireless work, through her never end-
ing understanding of the problems of her students, and
through her beautiful interpretations of music, especially
at Christmas time and Easter, she endeared herself to
all who knew her. To the memory of Mrs. McGinnis,
then, we present this dedication, with the wish that the
whole world might have known her as we knew her.

Dear .-.its Dobbs:
?he pictures you sent me of -an Jacinto High School's beauties
certainly prove all over again that the prettiest girls in this
country come from Texas. (and the most diffused photographs, I
night add.) I have stare! at these glamorous blurs, wondering what
the girls who poced for them might actually look like, and these
are my cnoices. .I'lth so much retouching standing between the
Judge and real life, I have tried to guees at the original jodels.
Hope the results will please local connoisseurs who have tr.e ad-
vantage of admiring these ladles In person.
Beet wishes, „

San Jacinto s Golden Bears narrowly missed a berth as State Finalists when they were defeated 7-6 by San
Antonio in the City Conference playoffs. The Bears outclassed San Antonio in every branch of the statistics. Had
we tied the San Antonio squad, we would have had a technical victory. However, we were forced to be Houston
City Champs, no small honor in itself. It was truly a grey day for the Bears, and the team was sorry, yet still
proud and able to hold its head high.

SEPT. 30: We kind of sizzled out on this one: San Jac 6, Pt. Arthur 41.
SEPT. 31: Seen on Main Street: Mrs. Secor, the proud grandmother of a baby girl,
passing out cigars.
OCT. I: Turned in my first copy today. Using a typewriter sure is a lot of work. B. T.
(Before Typewriter) I could cover up my horrible spelling with my horrible
penmanship, now, I have to use the dictionary. Ah well, such is life.

b) was booted out of room 1117 at 2:30 Saturday morning?
OCT. 12: Why did so many San Jac bearesses think about posing in armor for their El Oroso por-

(The dirty paint rag is thrown out of the window by John Paul)
Mrs. B. (menacingly) John Paul, go right downstairs, pick that rag up, then come back
here and put it where it belongs.
John Paul: (leaning out of the window) I won t have to go downstairs, I think I can reach it
from here.
OCT. 24: Ladies and Gentlemen: In this corner we have Magruder's American Gov't, weighing
in at 708 pages, and in this corner we have Challenger Werlein, also carrying a lot of
weight. This promises to be quite a fight, ladies and gentlemen, a duel to the last red
herring for the Mind of the Houston School Child and the Vote of the School Child s
Parents.
OCT. 28: Indigestion, Inc.—or—yell practice in the lunchroom today. To eat or not to eat, that was
the question.
OCT. 31: Tonite's the night that all witches and most teachers unpack their broomsticks and go cruis-
ing about in the midnight blue — so beware!

JAN. 3: Which twin had the Toni? Ask Joan and Jean McMillian •— they were awarded second prize
in a nation-wide double-beauty contest sponsored by the Toni Company.
JAN. 6: The National Honor Society held their installation ceremony this afternoon in the auditorium.
JAN. 26: For a while it looked as though Sir Conan Doyle's Red-Headed Legue'' was wandering
around San Jac today, then we realized that it was only some Bear-cubs who had been
hitting the bottle—the peroxide bot , that is.

FEBRUARY
FEB. I: Today I decided to gather up all the funny things that people had said all year and put them
in February's column for the lack of anything better to do.
FEB 4: One of Mrs. Reeves' thicd period scholars is to be given credit for this one:
Mrs. R. What is a myth? *
Bette S: A myth is a lady that does not have a husband.
FEB. 15: While discussing marriage in Mr. Alsup's sixth period class:
Mr. A: Can any of you Latin students tell me the Latin root of the word "marriage?"
Burnie D. (helpfully) Maor means sorrow.
FEB. 22: Miss Collier told us this one today. Her colored maid was telling her of the various degrees
that her family graduated with. "My big brother graduated with "cum laud," and my
sister she graduated with "Magna cum laud," she said. "What about you?" Miss Collier
asked, "How did you graduate?" The girl laughed. 'I graduated "Thank de Laud!"
In the same vein a certain gal named Joy has been spelling "Marital," "martial," but like
Mr. Alsup says, it's all a matter of opinion.
CALENDAR FOR EL OROSO

juniors, 7, in the annual Junior-Senior Football game.
MARCH 15: Clear the halls! Clear the halls! Call for the ambulances! Already 3 unknowing students
have been runover, for being unaware that today was the El Oroso deadline.
MARCH 17: Aha! TKb speech department is on the march again, and this time to the biggest tourney

As these words rang out through the
audience, they brought with them a
cloud of chillbumps that alighted on all
of our arms, and just as always it left
everyone with a feeling of reverence
that we perhaps had not entered with.
APRIL 7: What? The speech department's at it
again. Why don't you leave a few
prizes for other schools? We hear you
took the University of Houston Tour-
nament by storm!
MAY I: Hade! Hade! Hade! 2-3-4—Competitive

there's a shaky heel in every boot. Who
won? I wish I knew.
MAY 5: Ring out with the trumpets and roll out
the red carpet. Make way for the King
and Queen of San Jacinto, JgeJddlier
and Puddy Harwell. Of course, some
of us didn't get to see it, for we spent
all of our money watching the can-can
