MISS LAURA CASHION
Miss Laura Cashion, to whom we dedicate this Gagashoan, has been a guiding
light to us throughout our four years of high school. Her warm and friendly
heart, with her genial spirit, has made us love her. The influence of this beloved
advisor, whose guidance and companionship we have valued so greatly, will
remain with us wherever we happen to wander.

Mr. Obourn, we wish to express our heartiest
appreciation for your help and encouragement.
You have given your utmost to see that our years
were happy ones and our plans successful. You
participated in our activities and you anticipated
our future success as though you were one of us.
In our eyes, Mr. Obourn, you represent our
ideal of friendliness, sympathetic understanding

Mr. O’Donnell, for the three years you
have been our principal, we have pro-
fited by your counsel. In our classwork,
you have been a constant reminder of
the rewards which will come through

AS FACULTY LEAVES____
Mrs. Caldwell, John, Mr. Caldwell and David
Last summer Mr. Caldwell,
who had been teaching French
here at East Rochester for many
years, left our town to study for
a Doctor’s Degree at Middle-
bury College in Vermont. Here,
Mr. Caldwell was chosen as one
of a small group to go to France
for further study. As a result,
he is studying at the University
of Paris this winter.
Mr. Caldwell, with Mrs. Cald-
well and their sons David and
John are living in a suburb of
Paris and the boys and Mrs.
Caldwell are learning to speak
French. At the time this book
went to press, Mr. Caldwell had
just resigned from our school
system to continue his Doctor-
ate work. We shall miss Mr.
Caldwell, and we wish him all
of the success possible both in
completing his degree and in his
future teaching.

Of Leadership in School
STUDENT
COUNCIL
During the past year, the Student
Association of East Rochester High
School has accomplished many
things. Under the very capable
leadership of President, Jerry
Mousso, we have sold basketball
passbooks for the games, and have
helped other schools in starting
their student government organ-
izations. Irondequoit High School
is one of the schools which Jerry
Mousso, and Vice-President Lloyd
Gomez, attended and talked to,
regarding school government.
We have a very good staff of
representatives. They all take in-
terest in the meetings and have
chosen the cheerleaders with care
and a great deal of consideration.
Each home room is represented on
the council. Representatives are
elected by tine voting in the home
rooms.
The President and Vice-Presi-
dent are elected by popular vote,
and this year, for the first time, we
have used the voting machine to
cast our ballots. The Secretary,
Donald Saltrelli, was elected at the
first meeting by the representa-
tives.

Through the guidance ot Miss Ann
Marie Hery, the editor of this
year’s Brown and White, Barbara
Davis, and the associate editors,
Agnes Properzi and Anthony Isi-
dore, produced many good issues
of the paper.
An improvement especially not-
ed this year, was in the new Sports
Page. For the first time in years,
the complete page was sports, and
many sports scoops were an-
nounced.
More pictures and cartoons were
featured in the paper. The front
page was varied in style, and more
future news was published. These
are only a beginning of the many
improvements our paper has de-
veloped.

Have you ever tried to organize a book? Little did
our able editor, Jim Nenno, who was skillfully as-
sisted by the co-editors Joyce Burns and Phyllis
Gross know what they were getting into! But ob-
serve the results! Much gratitude goes to Miss
Bourne and Miss Beardsley who had many sleep-
less nights pondering over ‘Our Town.”
Also on the staff were Jack Schenk and Don
Saltrelli, the business managers, who went through
that tedious operation of borrowing their fathers’
cars to collect advertisements. We could never have
succeeded without “the kids with the click,” Clark
Knorr and Lloyd Gomez, our photography man-
agers. And everyone knows what a hard job it is
trying to get money out of people!

Sporting a 5-3 season record, the 1949
edition of East Rochester footballers
came through with another successful
season; but lost out in the county toga
race to Brighton.
The Brown and White clad gridders
failed to score in but one game, that
being a non-league affair with Batavia
where they were forced to battle the
mud and rain as well as a crack Batavia
eleven. The “Brown Jug Classic” with
Fairport proved to be a bitter end to the
season as the localites dropped a heart-
breaker to their traditional rivals by a
14-13 score. The Quinnmen pulled the
upset of the season, though, when they
nipped an undefeated Newark eleven
14-12. Newark ended the -season with
the E. R. victory being their only loss.
Don “Bo” Courtney, Paul Bower, Jack
Vienne, and Dick Devereaux were E. R.
standouts that won All-County positions
due to their outstanding playing.

Team play, and a “never-say-

that helped our side build up
that tremendous 19-1 record
which included a 19 game
winning streak. The Baroody-

has turned out another winning

High. Combining height, speed,

have rung up a total of 14 wins

If our J. V. ball clubs are

GIRLS PLAY DAY
A Volleyball play day was observed in ERHS
February 26, 1950. Our girls were hosts to
Penfield, Pittsford, Irondequoit, Fairport and
Brighton. Many new friendships were made by
the girls from the different schools. Refreshments
were served and everyone had an enjoyable after-
noon. We hope, in the future, there will be many
more Play days.
The intramural program plays an im-
portant part in the life of the high school
girl. The program was developed with
the idea of giving opportunity for all
to participate. “A Sport for Every Girl
and Every Girl in a Sport,” is our motto.
Through participating in the various
sports, girls accrue sufficient number of
points to entitle them to athletic awards.
Championship teams and candidates
for Honor Teams play a final game be-
fore a group of teachers, who act as
judges, and pick the first and second
Honor Teams.

Exercise
The intramural basketball schedule pro-
vides activity for practically every boy
in the Jr.-Sr. High School. Immediately
following Thanksgiving, a schedule in-
volving teams in home rooms from the
7th grade through Senior High School
begins, and champions in these leagues
are determined at the schedule’s termin-
ation about March 15. The top ranking
Senior, Junior, Sophomore, and Fresh-
man teams then compete against the
corresponding champions from Brighton
High School.

In 1949, East Rochester had a very “green” team, but under the
capable coaching of Mr. Brody, many individual stars were
discovered. The most outstanding was Chuck Collins, who won
the sectionals in the shot put. He also set a new county record
with a heave of 48 ft. 9 in. Other county winners were John Cala-
brese in the high jump, Nick DeMare, in the 100 yd. dash, and
Frank Santucci in the pole vault. We had a winning county' relay
team in the 440 yd. competition. The relay team composed of
Nick DeMare, Jack Vienne, Sam Peterson, and Frank Santucci,
was the first county winning relay team in fifteen years.
Though this was not the greatest track team in ability, it was
great in spirit and coaching.

The 1949 baseball team under the leadership of newly
appointed coach, Bill Boyce, had a fairly good season.
Winning nine out of fifteen games this team had consid-
erable talent. The 1950 season will see all but four start-
ing members of the team in uniform. The boys that coach
Bill Boyce will surely miss, are Jack Vienne, Paul Grat-
ton, Pat Petti, and Ray Setter. Coach Boyce is hoping
for a better season this year.

DEBATE CLUB
Greatly increased in size from last year,
the Debate Club this year was a thriving
organization. It was under the guidance of
our capable advisor Miss Bently.
At an early meeting Mary Maiorani was
elected President, Mary Leeper, Vice-
President, and Elain Gowan, Secretary.
With these three officers the club enjoyed
many spirited debates on current topics of
interest in the nation and in the school.
Patricia Kinmond, Kenneth Plall, Mary
Leeper, and Neil Van Scott were the four
students who expertly gave the “Junior
Town Meeting of the Air” discussion for
WHEC this year.

The Library Club consists of boys and
girls in High School that are interested
in working in the library. This work
consists of checking books in and out
of the library, shelving books, keeping
the library tidy, and the students quiet
when Mr. Johnson, the librarian, is out
of the room. There is also the tedious
job of taking inventory at the end of
the year.
The Library Club does not meet as
often as it has in the past because of so
many extra-curricular
other activities at night.

CUSTODES
The Latin Club is a social organization
composed of students who have, or are
taking, Latin. In order to join the club,
it is necessary to maintain at least an
85 per cent average.
During the year, the club has had
interesting meetings. Initiations of new
members, parties, and various other ac-
tivities, were planned at these social
gatherings. At our first meeting in the
fall, the officers were elected for the
year. They are at present: Consuls—Betty
Root, Bill Jorgensen, Scriba—Patsy Gil-
hart, and Aedile—Joe Ross.
Under the guidance of our capable ad-
visor, Miss Fritz, the club has had a very
successful year.

Coronation Ceremony . , ,
KING—Nick Francipane
QUEEN-Julia Milo
AJany years ago, when Mr. Morgan was Superintendent
ot Schools here in East Rochester, the East Rochester
ympics were instituted. The program was begun with
a arge parade in which each school organization entered
a eautifully decorated float. After the parade thei e were
sports contests of all kinds in the park. Prizes were
awarded to the winners of the different events and also
,° e organization creating the most original and most
eautitul float. To reign over this celebration, an Olympic
King and Queen were chosen by the student body.
Hough the years the coronation of the King and Queen
las undergone many changes. Due to the war, the
ympic ceremony was stopped. More recently the Cor-
onation has become a much more impressive, courtly
service.

One of the best-loved faces we see around school is everyone’s
friend, Charlie Rayforth. His cheerful smile in the halls, his
helpful hand that is always ready, and even that fearful knock
on the door every once in a while, will never be forgotten by the
Class of ’50. If, in the future, we meet people who prove to be
as considerate as you, Charlie, we are sure that our lives will
be richer in every way.

SAYS...
my company and I are interested in
the progress and prosperity of this
area. We pay large sums in taxes to
local, state, and Federal govern-
ments. We contribute substantially
to community projects and together
with our men and women workers
support every activity that benefits
this region. In short, we try to be
good friends and neighbors of the
people we serve.
