Spearfish mountain, looking south.
As WE TRY to look into the future, we wonder what it holds for
us. For some, more years of happy high school days are waiting, but for us
seniors there will be new jobs, new locations, new schools, and new experiences.
To those whose high school days are over, let this book be a good com-
panion, recalling many old friends and happy years.

Ben B. Burris. Principal, Spearfish Junior-Senior High
School.
Through our high school years, our principal and teacher has
always been ready to help us when we asked his assistance and has always
met us more than half-way in doing so, and has always given us a helping
hand when we were confused. Serving as our class adviser, he has helped us
solve our many problems as seniors.

The Board of Advisers of Spearfish high school is
composed of two representatives elected from each
class, and one member of the faculty, who in turn is
selected by the Board members.
The Board serves as the official student body which
meets with the superintendent and principal to dis-
cuss and recommend school policies and procedures.
Many fine school projects have had their inception
in these meetings. The Board also formulates plans
for student functions such as the election and coronation of the Spearfish high school queen.

Highlighting the basketball season by winning the Black Hills Conference championship, the
1948-49 Spartan basketball team completed one of the most successful seasons in the school's
history, having won the most games of any Spartan team, 19, and losing the least, four, while play-
ing against both class "A" and class "B" school competition.
The climax of the season came when the Spearfish club won the Black Hills Conference cham-
pionship, a feat never before turned by a class ”B" school in Conference history. The Spartans also
copped the District championship, and took the runner-up position in the Region 8 tournament,
losing by a two-point margin to White River in the finals.

Bringing home the Black Hills Conference Tennis singles trophy in 1948 as well as runners-up
honors in 1948 and 1949 was the record of the first team from Spearfish high school to complete in a
tennis tournament. In 1948 Myrle Hanson and Don Ward each disposed of opponents from Rapid
City and Hot Springs in the first and second rounds of the singles, only to meet each other in the
finals, with Ward defeating Hanson for the Black Hills Conference championship. In 1949 Hanson
was also conference runner-up, losing in the finals to McCullen of Rapid City.
The doubles team of Ward and Floyd Dahl won runners-up honors in 1949, losing to the team
from Rapid City, after having defeated the Hot Springs team.
Tennis was started as a minor sport in Spearfish high school in 1948 under the sponsorship of
J. S. Rygg.
A local tennis tournament was held for girls in 1949, with eight girls participating. SHS girls
singles championship was Lois Larson; Dorothy Burnham was runner-up.
