THE SENIOR GLASS OF ARMSTRONG HIGH SCHOOL IN RICHMOND, VIRGINIA
DEDICATION
We find it extremely difficult to put in words our deep and affectionate gratitude to our sponsoring staff for their untiring efforts and service to us during our last year at Armstrong.
Without their sincere interest and constant encouragement, we know that we would not be adequately prepared to play worthy roles in the world of tomorrow. Through our sponsors’ unfaltering faith and devotion, we have gained a truer conception of the responsibilities which we ourselves must accept at the crossroads.
With respect and devotion we dedicate our yearbook to our sponsoring committee: Row 1—Mrs. Dorothy B. Toyer, Mr. Reginald L. Brown, Miss Edna O. Bradford; Row 2—Mrs. Margaret Bettis, Mrs. Hattie G. Gadsden; Row 3—Mrs. Edwina C. Sharp.
Miss Armstrong and Attendants
Every year the pupils of Armstrong elect a senior girl to be “Miss Armstrong. This is the most coveted honor a girl can win. She is selected because of previous attainments in scholarship, attendance, personality, development, conduct and ability to accept and worthily execute various responsibilities.
She is elected by the popular vote of the entire school.
This year Doris Dandridge is Miss Armstrong. She is shown with her attendants at the Armstrong-Walker game.
Left to right: Bernice Shaw, Mr. G. W. Peterson, Joseph Donovan, Miss Arm strong, Doris Dandridge; George Studgeon, Vernelle Brewer.
FOREWORD
We are at the crossroads.
Our varied paths chosen during our stay at Armstrong have come to this culmination of our many dreams—graduation. Along our way we have been guided, not only by sign posts but by friendly guides— our teachers. From this time forward, we follow the sign posts, roads, and high ways of our own choosing. Much depends on the wisdom of our choices.
We have learned that the straight road leads to achievement, that shortcuts can prove detrimental, that the right road may be a hard one to follow, but that eventually it is the one that ends in honor and true happiness.
We understand that we shall encounter struggles, sorrows, dreams half-fulfilled, and unheeding competition.
We have, however, the idealism and strength of youth, and with these, intend to work to achieve intellectual growth, spiritual depth, and healthful physical and social activities.
George Peterson Jr. Principal
Mrs. Etna A. Green Assistant Principal
I extend heartiest congratulations to the 1949 graduates.
May each choose wisely at the crossroads the signpost best for him to follow.
If when travelled, the road seems not to lead to the destination in mind, counselling service will still be available at Armstrong High.
With youthful enthusiasms, stead fast courage, and high idealism seek success and happiness through service to God and man, on whichever roads chosen.

Alma Mater
Now the evening star is fading, Day is drawing to a close;
And our hearts are heavy-laden, Full of sorrow, full of woes.
Chorus (1st and 2nd Verses)
Armstrong! Armstrong!
Guiding light to all;
If on land or sea we wander,
We will ever heed thy call.
Armstrong! Armstrong!
Alma Mater dear,
May joy be yours, may peace be yours Throughout the years.
2
Thou hast been our inspiration Thou hast been our guide so fair; Thou alone art consolation,
When our hearts are in despair.
3
Hark! the bells are sweetly ringing, Night has come and we must part; But to us a strand is clinging, It can never leave our hearts.
Chorus (3rd Verse)
Armstrong! Armstrong!
Home of soldiers brave.
We shall ever cherish, love thee, Ever for thy spirit crave,
Armstrong! Armstrong!
Ere the sun doth rise
May light be yours,
May all be yours,
Sweet peace! Good-bye.
Dear Armstrong High
There is a dear old school that I adore It is a dear old place to go,
If you are thinking of the world to be, then you should go to Armstrong High.
2
So keep your banner flying high and bright For you’re bur star, our guiding light, We’ll always cheer thee, yes thy name we’ll raise;
As for us, we go to sing thy praise.
Chorus
Armstrong keep they name up in the sky Dear Armstrong Hi;
Armstrong we will always heed thy call Dear Armstrong Hi;
You’ll be a leading star and we know why Dear old Armstrong Hi.

As we go from day to day, Striving on our merry way, Due respects we’ll always pay To Armstrong High.

Class Song
We feel so proud to say,
We have done our best each day,
Now parting has come,
But we’ll always think of home.
Sadly now we bid adieu,
As we leave old orange and blue,
With a pledge e’er to be true,
To Armstrong High.
tune—-‘'My Happiness
Class Poem
Our happiest hours, Armstrong, were those we spent with you
You filled our days with sunshine, and made our dreams come true
But parting time has come when we take leave from thee
And all the joy of high school life will be but a memory.
We’ve toiled each day to reach our goal, You’ve helped us in both mind and soul.
Our graduation day has come
And we our life work have begun.
We’ve used your sign posts on our way To gain our triumph on this day We’ll follow them along life’s roads And use our knowledge to lighten loads.
We’ll never forget our Armstrong friends As we reach out for worthy ends Although far we roam along the way We’ll be back reunion day.
CLASS CREED
We believe that the class of 1949 is, and always will be, a class possessing ingenuity, persverance, and self respect—a class which means to rise to higher levels through honest efforts.
We believe that the class of 1949 will bring honor and glory to the school we dearly love.
We believe we have the necessary foresight and stamina to overcome difficulties, selfishness, hatred, conceit, and sensitiveness.
We believe we are great enough to bear our own burdens and to live creative Christian lives.
We believe we have strength to go forward with faith in ourselves and in our ability to build a better world.
We believe we have the necessary hardihood and common sense to constantly reexamine and readjust our goals, so that they will be in line with a constantly changing civilization.
We have these beliefs because we have been directed along the paths of straightforward thinking by parents, principals and teachers.

Corps’ Plans for 1949
The corps has planned a sponsor’s day exercise honoring each company’s sponsor; a competitive drill between companies with Maggie L. Walker High School; the cadets’ annual ball, and a graduation exercise for senior cadets.
Commandant Crawford in Cadet Office
CADET CORPS
Beginning February, 1949, the Cadet Corps of Armstrong High School underwent a complete reorganization. It was the desire of the principal, commandant and the military committee that the Cadet Corps be reorganized to meet military requirements with the idea that the Corps would become as good as any in the state. All new cadets will now undergo an extensive training period before they can even be considered for appointment to officers training school.
In this school each cadet will receive instructions concerning guard duty, map reading, the rifle, first aid and other military essentials. This will assure the cadet corps of well-trained and qualified officers. The ultimate of the corps is to meet all requirements before putting in application for the 55C set-up.
The Cadet Corps is now entering a new phase in the history of the Corps and with the co-operation of each cadet and each student they expect to put over their program with flying colors.

The Mark of a Champion
When a young man can face the business world with the same un daunted courage that he bucks the line in football and can take the bumps that inevitably will come to him in business, and can keep smiling, then he has the mark of a champion. The world needs young men like this and the world will make way for them.
