Hatchet Staff of 1948, wish to dedicate this
yearbook to those most deserving of the honor—Mom and
Dad. It was they who made it possible for us to go through
school, for, without ther help and guidance, we could not have
gone far. We appreciate the patience and understanding shown
us through the years and are happy to have this opportunity
to say "Thank you". So to you, Mom and Dad, with love, re-
spect and great admiration we dedicate this Hatchet of 1948

Through the able guidance and ceaseless efforts of the school board
and administrative staff, Washington Rural has become an institution widely
known throughout Greater Kansas City for excellent scholarship, outstanding
athletics, and the production of good citizens. The board members, as rep-
resentatives of this community, have unselfishly contributed toward making
the past year an outstanding one by maintaining an excellently equipped
and orderly building, a beautiful campus, and supplying the tools of educa-
tion to our student body.

TO THE FACULTY
School is fun but it can be a hard grind at times. The day-after-day
pursuit of knowledge has its obstacles and we know we've often stumbled
over the hurdles. But, even though we have been a trail to you, you've met
our shortcomings with tolerance, kindliness, and wisdom.
The teaching profession is a noble one, if not always fully appreciated by
your charges. Certainly the future of tomorrow depends upon the teachers
of today.
You have been both mentor and friend and, in this small way, we want
you to know of our appreciation.

IN MEMORIAM
"He was ever gentle, kind and good"—these words spoken several
centuries ago epitomize the qualities of Jack Hindman which were so valued
by his classmates. His untimely death early in the school-year, October 19,
was particularly saddening to his friends of the Senior Class, for they had
learned fully to appreciate his cheery personality and to know that he was
dependable and trustworthy.
An athelete, a writer for the school paper jnd a good student, his was
a well-rounded personality. An engaging smile made others happy just to be
near him.
The glow of a year which means so much to every Senior has been
dimmed by his passing. Jack Hindman, a fine classmate, will not be forgotten.
So we, the Hatchet staff and sponsors, in full recognition of his fine quali-
ties, dedicate this page of the 1948 annual to his memory.

Though our Freshman footsteps in the
Washington sands of time were a trifle hesi-
tant, and our ninety-two class-mates none too
V sure-footed that fall of '44, the 'awkward
squad" as we were labeled by upper class-men,
grew amazingly fast in confidence and ability.
\ We early were recognized as a leadership class,
and in our four pleasant years at Washington,
our classmates have been in the vanguard of
many outstanding achievements.
Into the thick of school activities we
plunged and eleven of our number were voted
\ into the Red Pepper Club, another six made
the Boy's Glee Club, Loring DuBois, Hugh
Eberle, and Jim Maxfield had prominent roles
in the school operetta "Pickles". DuBois also
served as student manager for the Freshman
and Varsity football teams, while Martha Ayers
was named Freshman attendant for the Home-
coming ceremonies. Class officers for our ini-
year were Ray Harvey-President, Joyce
ham-Vice President, and Bob Culberson-
S&tretary-Treasurer. Our sponsors were Miss
Celestine Evans, Mrs. Iva Voigt, Miss Karla
Kadavy, and Mr. Eugene Stewart.
Eighty-five cocky Sophomores trampled
j the green grass of the Washington Campus
\ the following fall electing Martha Ayers-Pres-
ident, Jim Maxfield-Vice President and Dick
Mosley-Secretary-Treasurer. School cheerlead-
ers from the Sophomore class were Veneta
' Diamond, Martha Ayers, Joyce Bigham and
Mary Ann Marquis. Homecoming attendant
x for the Sophomore class was Dorthea Diamond.
<yAs an example of real class spirit, Joyce Big-
1 ham won second place in the race for Queen
of the Hatchet Ball and Dick Mosley third place
xQ runner up for King because of our enthusiastic
? campaigning. Holding down positions on the
J football and basketball teams, were James
Bandy now of the United States Navy, Ray
\. Harvey and Dick Mosley. James Bandy and
L. D. Jaccard were admitted into "W" Club.
Eight Sophomores were represented in the Art
' Club, Joanne Gast being Secretary. In the
Boys Ensemble were Loring DuBois, Jim Max-
field, and Hugh Eberle. Loring DuBois was
selected for a part in the One Act Play, "The
Clock Struck One". Five Sophomores had pro-
minent roles in the operetta "The Lucky
Jade". This successful year was under the
sponsorship of Mr. Eugene Stewart, Mrs.
Helen Barnard, and Mr. Wayne Prichard.
For the third time the doors opened and
welcomed us to Washington in the fall of
1946. Our first year as upper classmen was
a glorious success. Leading us were Mr. Eugene
Stewart, Mrs. Vivian McCaffrey, Miss Mary
Franks, and Miss Ellen Sass. Class officers
were Arthur Harris-President, Anna Lu Hollan-
der-Vice President, Dorothy Trowbridge-Sec-
retary and E. C. Prowell-Treasurer. The Junior
Class was represented at the homecoming by
Carmen Sublett. As Juniors we produced "Very
Untruly Yours" with Don Gorsline, John Wer-
ner, Betty Beck, Lowell Brune, Marjorie Myers,
Beverly Saul, Marilyn Evans, Hugh Eberle, L.
D Jaccard, and Dorthea Diamond, under the Q
direction of Mrs. Vivian McCaffrey. In the
operetta, "The Golden Trail," prominent
parts were held by Glenda Wells, Virginia
Bishop, Veneta Diamond, Loring DuBois, Hugh
Eberle, and Jim Maxfield. Joan Mahr, Marjori^ v
Myers, and Joanne Gast were admitted into \
Quill and Scroll, a high school journalism
organization. "Poor Old Jim," the one act
play starred Don Gorsline, and Hugh Eberle.
Student manager for varsity football and bas-
ketball was Dale Horner. Climaxing the years
activity was a glamorous affair, the annual
Junior-Senior Prom, the setting of which was
a "Hollywood Premier".
With three successful years of high sch
ool life behind us, the following fall saw us fu'.
of’ determination to make our last year the
best yet. Under the leadership of Dale Homer-
President, Lester Brunker-Vice President, Lil-
lian Budy-Secretary and Loring DuBois-Trea-
surer, the class of '48 truly led the school in
spirit and achievement. Veneta Diamond and
Ray Harvey were Homecoming King and
Queen. Joyce Fleming was voted Homecoming
attendant, and Anna Lu Hollander, and Lowell
Brune were Pep Club attendants. Leading the
band at Homecoming were Drum Majorette,
Martha Ayers, and Head Majorette, Marian
Malott. Reigning over the annual Hatchet Ball
as Queen and King were Glenda Wells, and
Lowell Brune. Credit for the Senior play "Meet
The Duchess" successfully belongs to Joanne
Gast, L. J. Hedstrom, Glenda Wells, Don Gor-
sline, Marjorie Myers, Arthur Harris, Joyce
Bigham, Hugh Eberle, Martha Ayers, and
Beverly Saul. Mrs. Vivian McCaffrey directed
our Senior play also. Those taking part in our
last operetta "The Fire Prince" were Virginia
Bishop, Glenda Wells, Veneta Diamond, Don
Gorsline, Hugh Eberle, Lowell Brune, L. J.
Hedstrom, Jackie McKain, Bob Culberson, Jim
Maxfield, and Loring DuBois. The one act
play, "This Too, Too, Solid Flesh," presented
at league schools this year was directed by
Mrs. Vivian McCaffrey and included Glenda
Wells, Don Gorsline, Beverly Saul, Marjorie
Myers, Martha Ayers, and Joyce Bigham in
the cast. Taking the lead in various organi
tions were Dorthea Diamond-Student Counc
president, Anna Lu Hollander-Y-Teens presi
dent, Hugh Eberle-Hi-Y president, Ray Har-
vey-W-Club president, and Lowell Brune-Pep
Club president.
Our Class, the class of '48, has produced
an abundance of leaders and put over every
class project with the best of spirit and success.
Future Seniors, heed well the record of the
class of '48, for as we enter a sterner school
of life, we are confident that we have estab-
lished a record that will challenge any class
to follow. Thus has our progress in four years
of high school been recorded in the sands of
time.

Across the bulletin-board of the Washinq-
tonian is a large lettered caption readina- y
"FAIL THIS ASSIGNMENT AT YOUR PERIL"
and the special writers and reporters of the
school paper evidently took their editor's warn-
ing at face-value for they have consistently
turned out a very readable publication evid-
encing accurate and lively reporting, ' many
pictures and skillful make-up. The Journalism
Schools of both Kansas and Missouri Univers-
ities characterized the paper as "Excellent".
The editorial policy of the paper also has
been important in school life, notably the
Washingtonian's "Courtesy Pays" promotion
and its campaign "Let's strike the Rural"
which resulted in a name change for the
school.
New staffs were chosen at the start of
each semester.

"MEET THE DUCHESS"
by
James Reach
"Meet The Dutchess", a three act
comedy under the direction of Mrs.
Vivian McCaffrey, was the senior class
presentation November 21.
The action took place in a Hollywood
boarding house where we met a colorful
and amusing group of people, all of
whom had aspirations for stardom.
As the play opened, Elsie Blake, who
had won a popularity contest in her native
Waterloo, Iowa, arrived in Hollywood to
seek fame and fortune. The main plot
concerned the romance between her and
Ronnie Ward, an unemployed press agent,
and his efforts to put Elsie across as a
movie star.
The play afforded a true and amusing
cross-section of life in Hollywood.

Bedlam on the Washington High stage
marked the Junior class presentation, "We
Shook the Family Tree,” and the audience re-
action was keyed to the rollicking spirit of the
play. Revolving about the heroic efforts of
teen-age Hildegard to become a brilliant so-
cialite, the play moved to a clever climax, aided
by the hilarious events precipitated by the re-
mainder of her family and friends. The distri-
bution of Dad's old love letters via neighbor-
hood mail-boxes, the disastrous results of kid
brothers experiment with fishing worms, and
Bob's fish in the bath tub, formed a colorful
sequence of events.
The successful production was directed by
Miss Ruth Ann Gatchell, assisted by a large
number of Juniors.

"This Too, Too, Solid Flesh," a one act
play by EstherCooper, and Elizabeth Fuller, was
directed by Mrs. Vivian McCaffrey. The play
was first presented at the Variety Show, Febru-
ary 13, and was Washington's entry in the
league one act play festival presented at Bon-
ner, March 23, and Olathe, March 30.
The cast and director also journeyed to
Lawrence to compete in the District Speech and
Drama Festival.
"This Too, Too, Solid Flesh," was a hu-
morous burlesque of modern ideas of reducing.
Helen, a young married woman, has a sudden
desire to remove some of the "too, too solid
flesh," after learning that a girlhood sweet-
heart is to lecture in her town, so that she may
appear in her girlhood slim silhouette. Her ef-
forts are enhanced for the audience, by the
satire comments of a clever elderly aunt and
the lively razzing of the amused young hus-
band. The action leads through a lively game
of contract bridge interspersed with "reducing"
conversation with friends. The wife's efforts to
reduce with a victrola accompaniment, while
the husband keeps up a strain of humorous
comment and mimicking, lead on to the un-
expected climax.

QUEEN VENETA
October 24th marked
another successful Homecom-
ing for our Washington Wild-
cats. Veneta Diamond, senior,
held the royal position for this
important event.
Veneta was chosen as Queen
by the members of the football
squad. Those making up the
royal party were Dick Mosley,
Queen's escort, and first atten-
dant, Anna Lu Hollander, with
her escort Lowell Brune. These
were chosen by the boys and
girls Pep Club. The classes
chose the following as atten-
dants to the Queen: Joyce
Fleming, Senior; Bernice De-
lich, Junior; Jackie Hill, Sopho-
more; and Marcia Stegmaier,
Freshman. Crownbearers were
little Connie Hall and Marcia
Jeanne Powell.

ROYALTY
Our king, Ray Harvey, was
also given his royal position by
the football boys.
During the half of this excit-
ing and victorious Turner-
Washington game the band put
on a striking performance. The
crowning then took place with
Judge William H. McHale
crowning our lovely Queen.
After the game the dance
began in full swing with an in-
termission to permit the Queen
to be crowned again. The King
did the honors this time and
very effectively too. Then the
dance resumed with the first
being for royalty only, and the
second for all Kings and Queens
of previous years.
Much credit goes to the fa-
culty committee-Miss Gatchell,
Mr. Green, Mr. Roberts, Mrs.
Howard and Miss Olson-who
played a very important part in
making our Homecoming such
a successful one.

QUEEN GLENDA
The third annual Hatchet
Ball to raise revenue for the
1948 yearbook was given in the
High School Gymnasium De-
cember 5th. The setting was
that of a summer night, with
lazily hanging fluffy clouds
and a myriad of twinkling stars.
A miniature crimson airplane
circled the glamorously deco-
rated bandstand and in fluffy
letters wrote, Hatchet Ball '48.
The Royalty to reign over the
ball was chosen at large by the
entire student body. After the
tabulating of ballots was ter-
minated, those who received
top honors for higher competi-
tion were Glenda Wells, Joyce
Bigham, Carmen Sublett, Mar-
tha Ayers, and Dorthea Dia-
mond. The top five boys were
Lowell Brune, Cecil Rogers, Jim
Maxfield, Dick Mosley, and
Jack Hicks.
54
To put a vote on your favor-
ite candidate cost 10c and the
voting continued until 10:30
p.m. The final counting took
place during the intermission.
Mr. H. B. Powell crowned
Glenda Wells and Lowell Brune
Queen and King of the 1948
Hatchet Ball. The remaining
candidates acted as attendants.
It was truly a gala occasion
as many friends and alumni
danced to the fine music of the
Modernaires Orchestra.

Washington High School this year
had one of the most successful basket-
ball teams in the school's history. The
team was under the direction of Coach
William "Bud" Foster, and in his first
year at Washington, Foster guided the
boys to a championship in the Eastern
Kansas League. In league play the
Wildcats were undefeated, winning
over Rosedale, Turner, Olathe, and
Bonner. They lost only to Westport,
Ruskin and Leavenworth. Walter Good
and E. C. Prowell were co-captains of
the team. Frank Bigham and Bill Long
were chosen for the All-Star Team and
E. C. Prowell landed a position on the
second team. The boys performed sen-
sationally in every game and the
school can be proud of their remark-
able record.

TJRACK
Able instruction by Coach E. W. Stewart and hard work on the
cinders paid dividends for the Washington track team. Participating
in numerous duals, K. U. Relays, and State Track Meet, several of
the outstanding competitors were Dwane Crowl, L. D. Jaccard, Bob
Dutton, Charles Duderstadt, and George Juranich. Their third place
rating in the E.K.L. Meet indicates the fine competitive spirit of the
boys.

Sophomore Athletics is the latest additions to Washington High School's
extensive sports program. It is hoped that it will stimulate a greater interest
in athletics. The sophomores in their first year of competition had an ex-
cellent record. In football the boys were outstanding, with Walt Schuler,
W. R. Palmer, and Don Muder seeing action in several varsity games. The
boys gave a good account of themselves in every game and showed great
promise for the future.
In basketball the boys enjoyed a successful season, defeating such
formidable foes as Ward and Wyandotte. Walt Schuler, Fred Tarry, Marvin
Potter, Charles Eubanks and Jerry Thompson were outstanding members of
the team and most of these boys will see plenty of action on the varsity
squad next year.
