Administmtion
Mr. Harmon
Knowledge is power. Today, more than ever, every
child needs the training and knowledge that modem
education can give him. Education that will result in
better citizens and in better homes is our greatest hope
for the future. It will strengthen our way of life that we
shall survive the stress of the times.
The public schools belong to the people. Every
citizen is a shareholder in the largest community enter-
prise we have. Buildings are erected and equipped;
school boards chosen who employ teachers, provide
books and transportation for the children, all in response
to the votes and wishes of the citizens of the community.
Constantly striving to provide better education oppor-
tunities for all citizens of a community is a major civic
responsibility.
In view of the needs of today and of the future, and
in simple justice to every child, we must make our edu-
cation satisfying and effective if the promise of our
great nation is to be fulfilled.
??
Mr. Dennis
It is the the hope of the school, that you will ever
have a warm spot in your heart for it. It is further de-
sired that your memories will be happy, and your
school friendships lasting.
Your school in turn will stand in readiness to serve
all who have, at some time, been enrolled. Your rec-
ords have been carefully kept and may be used for
reference at anytime.
The graduation of the class of 1948 will leave some
wide gaps in our various student organizations. We
at school will miss you. Our wish is that you have
enjoyed and profited by having had the experiences
offered by your school. Your ladder climbing will be of
interest to your families, your school, and your com-
munity.

The Board of Education is elected by and directly responsible to the people.
It is the supreme educational agency in any school district.
The duties of the Board of Education include the responsibility for interpreting
the needs of the community and the requirements of the school; developing
policies, in accordance with the law and in accordance with the educational
needs and wishes of the people; approving means by which those policies
may be made effective; furnishing financial means for carrying on the approved
programs; appraising the efficiency of the professional services rendered in
terms of value to the community and keeping the people informed of purpose,
value, conditions, and needs of public education in the community.
Your school administration stands for good schools. Our Board has visions
of a yet finer school, staffed by professional teachers who will stay with us,
not for one or two, but eight, ten or fifteen years.

In September, 1944, fifteen boys and girls started on a new kind of school
life. We had now become Freshmen. Our first year was started by electing
class officers. Lisle Yaussy was chosen as president, with Eldon Geiger as his
assistant. Melda Striker was to keep records of the meetings, while Jannetta
Stahl was to guard our money. Alice Ulmer was our Student Council represen-
tative. Our advisor was Mrs. Mohrhoff.
On April 16th, we went to Virginia Steiger's home to honor her on her
birthday.
Soon we were given the name of "Sophomores", and this year proved to
hold more activity for us. For our President, Melda Striker was elected, and
Jannetta Stahl her assistant. Alice Ulmer kept the notes and Charles Martin
was the treasurer. The Student Council Representative was Eldon Geiger.
Mr. Roest was our advisor. A new member joined our class this year; Iona
Patten, from Claridon School.
In September the class went to Jannetta Stahl's home where a hay ride and
weiner roast was enjoyed. We sponsored a High School party in October, the
main event of the evening being the initiation of the Freshmen. Four of our
boys played on the Reserve Basketball Team this year.
During the summer numerous meetings were held to make plans for our
festival. Most of these turned out to be parties and we had a very successful
festival.
Coming back to school this fall we were considered Upper Classmen as we
were now Juniors. Charles Martin was our President, with Iona Patten as his
helper. Melda Striker kept records of our meetings and Lisle Yaussy was
trusted with our money. Lois Ulmer was our representative to the Student
Council.
On November 15, we presented our class play, "The Fighting Littles", under
the direction of our advisor, Mrs. Shell.
John Miller and Lisle Yaussy were selected to play on the varsity.
During the winter much time was spent in making preparations for the
Junior-Senior Banquet which was held at Hotel Harding; Marion, Ohio, May 16.
The banquet was carried out with the "Netherlands" theme.
Melda Striker was chosen as the May Day Queen. Margaret Auck moved
to Bucyrus at the end of the Junior year.
Then we had become Seniors. Charles Martin was our President and John
Miller his assistant. Iona Patten was elected Secretary-Treasurer. Our Student
Council Representative was Alice Ulmer. In October we journeyed to Tiffin
to have pictures taken.
Again this year Lisle Yaussy and John Miller were on the Varsity, being
co-captains. Other class members were also taking part in many other school
activities.
Our Senior play "The Daffy Dills" was given April 23, directed by Mr.
Dennis, our advisor.
On May 16 we had our Baccalaureate services and May 21 was our Com-
mencement, thus ending our high school days. We will always recall these
days as some of the happiest of our lives.

It was dusky evening as I slipped away
from my home to take a short walk. After
going a short distance by a woods, I sud-
denly came upon a gypsy looking intently
at the steam coming from the spout of a tea
kettle hung over a small fire. I was told to
gaze into the steam and think of something
I d like to know in the future. I thought of my
classmates and what they would be doing
in 1955.
The steam ascended heavenward and the
first I saw was Lois Ulmer. It seemed she
had taken much of her high school training
seriously. She was an efficient stenographer
working for the Federal Government in Wash-
ington.
The next vision formed in a cloud of steam
was of John Miller. He was tilling the soil of
his rich, fertile ranch. A woman came across
the field carrying a basket and a thermos
bottle. His wife, of course, for only a patient,
loving, self-sacrificing, wife would come out
in the hot sun with a man's dinner.
Next came the vision of Alice Ulmer. She
is not as well known as her twin, but has
taken a definite interest in her husband's
affairs. He is a rich and prominent photog-
rapher in New York.
Another cloud appeared before my eyes
which revealed something unknown. Ardis
Roop, who thought that nature had ordained
she be a poet never wrote another poem after
leaving Sulphur Springs. In a short time she
weds an interesting young man and leaves
for Florida.
The vision changed and I saw Jannetta
Stahl, who had become a world renowned
pianist. She had been traveling with an
associate on a concert tour. They had pre-
viously been appearing at the Metropolitan
Opera House. Her companion is an artist
and singer, none other than Virginia Steiger.
Next I saw James Ream. He was seated
in a stadium where a major league baseball
game was being played. From the looks of
Jim he never looses a bet. His friends con-
sider him a reliable source of information as
to who the winning team will be.
The steam ceased for a moment and came
forth with a far changed scene. It showed a
model from Paris, France. She was returning
to this country by plane. I gazed deeply to
make sure I was correct. Yes, it was Melda
Striker.
This time only a microphone came to view
in the cloud of steam; ah—, now a face.
Charles Martin had just taken the place of
Walter Winchell as headliner of Hollywood
events.
It seemed in the next scene that Margaret
Wood had become the leading lady in her
society circle. She lives in Boston with her
children and husband. He is the owner of a
series of style shops.
Another cloud came into view. Eldon
Geiger was before a huge audience in the
Cleveland Science Auditorium. In his next
book, soon to be published, he simplifies the
study and learning of Chemistry and Physics.
The next vision was one I had been wait-
ing for. What had happened to Dolores
Stewart? She seemed to be on her honey-
moon. The ocean liner she was aboard was
drawing into the harbor at Hawaii.
The cloud vanished and another came
from the tea kettle revealing a dignified
gentleman. This was Lisle Yaussy. He had
attended Harvard University and settled
down to a quiet life of coaching. His team
plays each year at the Madison Square
Gardens.
In my own future appeared a home in
which I was very happily settled. Unlike
most of my classmates, I had stayed near
my own home.
That was all I saw. The fire had dwindled
to a few burning embers. No more steam
arose from the little tea kettle. I walked
slowly home hoping all this would come
true. If it did, all my classmates would have
happy, contented lives. This was my wish
for them all.

Crawford County has a chapter in the National Honor Society. As yet,
there is no uniformity in the eligibility rules for entrance in the Society. This is
left up to the individual schools. This year the Student Council was asked to
make the rules. They were set up as follows:
A Junior must have a 3.5 average in his academic subjects.
A Senior must have a 3 point average in his academic subjects. Neither are
to have C's in academic subjects, or D's in non-academic subjects to be eligible.
In the spring of the year, a banquet is held for the Junior and Senior mem-
bers of the Crawford County Honor Society. It is usually held at the school of
the Vice-President of the local chapter. At these banquets, the students learn
to know others in the county. The new members receive pins as tokens of
membership.

The Varsity this year was built around two
lettermen from last year's fine team. High scor-
ing Johnnie Miller at foreword and durable
"Pete" Yaussy at guard. The remainder of
the team consisted of Sophomores and Fresh-
men who lacked much needed experience. Ex-
perience gained with each game brought steady
improvement to the team as was shown by
tournament play. Miller and Yaussy two of the
better boys to ever play for sulphur will be lost
by graduation and will certainly be hard to re-
place. The team next year should be quite
strong with the experience gained this year by
the older boys.

Sulphur entered the tournament lightly re-
garded due to a season record of 10 won and
8 lost. We played the first game of the tourna-
ment with Lykens a team that had beaten us
during the season. It was a nip and tuck battle
for three quarters with the score tied at 30 all
going into the final period. In the last quarter
Sulphur broke loose for 17 points to but 8 for
Lykens winning by a score of 47-38. Yaussy
with 18 and Miller with 16 were the leading
scorers.
The second appearance in the tournament
found the Yellow Jackets meeting Chatfield, a
team that we had split with during the season.
With Miller leading the way we off to a 15-5
lead early and held a comfortable lead during
the game winning 49-25. Miller led the scoring
with 22 points.
Our third game was with Holmes Liberty, one
of the stronger teams in the county. We had a
poor first half trailing by a score of 13-24. After
the intermission our boys came back strong
scoring 8 points in the third quarter to but 2 for
H-L. In the final quarter Sulphur made a great
bid to win when "Pete" fired a long shot back
of center to tie the score at 33 all. In the over-
time Sulphur matched field goals with H-L but
one foul shot spelled defeat for our gallant boys.
The final score Sulphur 39, H-L 40. Yaussy led
our scoring with 16 points.
We were the only team to play four games
in the tournament, meeting Mt. Zion for con-
solation honors. Our boys got off to a good
start leading 22-14 at half time. With "Pete"
hitting for 18 points from long range we won
going away 46-26 for third place in tournament
play.
