Foreword
The class of forty-eight takes great pleasure in presenting
the Mirus, as a story of our years at Miamisburg High School.
We hope that you will enjoy reading this book now and
in future years, as much as we have enjoyed editing it.
Our theme, Stairway To Success, tells what our school
years have meant to us. We extend our sincerest thanks to
those who have made our “success” possible.

We, the Mirus Staff, extend to future graduating classes,
all best wishes for their own Success.

To The Seniors
The day your Freshman class entered high school four
years ago there were one hundred and twenty enrolled. Since
that time some have dropped by the wayside each year until
at present you have a total of eighty-four eligible for gradua-
tion. A few new ones have been added to the list: Kenneth
Cook, Burl Short, and Doria Yoder, all of whom entered this
year, were the most recent additions.
As a member of the faculty I wish to congratulate each
member of the senior class for your fine attitude, your good
behavior, your willingness to work, and your many achieve-
ments both in the class room and extra-curricular activities.
I wish you good health, happiness and abundant success on
your journey through life.
Good luck Io the Clast of *48

Mr. Franklin M. Young Mr. Victor R. Klein
Mr. Franklin M. Young has served 19 years at Miamisburg. During these years he
has been a teacher, principal and finally superintendent, in which capacity he serves
us now. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree at Otterbein College, and later
received his Master of Arts Degree from Ohio State University.
Again this year, M. H. S. has been under the capable leadership of Mr. Victor R.
Klein. He is now completing his second year as principal, which is the climax of
fourteen years of teaching here. Mr. Klein graduated from Miami University with his
Bachelor of Science Degree, and then attended Ohio State University where he
earned his Master of Arts Degree. In addition to his many duties as principal, he
teaches advanced algebra, solid geometry, and plane geometry.

Chronicle of Success
r
The class of 1948 started Its Freshman year out with Don Butler as president, Jim Abbott, vice
president, and Norma Batson, secretary and treasurer. They were represented in Student Council
by Roselyn Harris, Fred Guenther, and Don Butler, and were capably guided by Miss Carr, and
Mrs. Manuel. Their theatrical presentation of the year was "In May With June,” a one act comedy.
The next step toward success (graduation) was their Sophomore year. Their officers were Don
Butler, president, Dale Kuhn, vice president, and Jim Abbott, secretary and treasurer. Their Student
Council members were Roselyn Harris, Fred Guenther, and Don Butler. The sponsors of the year
were Miss Conner and Miss Detling. The class Thespians capably produced "The Pampered Dar-
ling" another one act comedy, and the Sophomore boys who “sparked" the basketball team were
Don Butler, Ronnie Cole, Tim Herman, Don Heil, Ernie Kuhn, Dick Coblentz, Lowell Gebhart, Jim
Abbott, and Maurice Smalley.
Their Junior year was another step forward. They chose this year to lead them, Jim Abbott, pres-
ident, Orval Cummins, vice president, and Betty Staubus, secretary and treasurer. They elected to
Student Council, Roselyn Harris, Betty Sprague, Jim Abbott, and Fred Guenther, and were spons-
ored by Miss Rae, Miss Wieser, and Mr. Sheets. This was probably the busiest year of their high
school career, since they put on a three act comedy entitled "The Mad March Heirs,” ordered their
rings, and announcements, sold pencils, and various articles to procure money for the Junior-Senior
reception which was a great success.
Athletically they were represented in Football by Dick Coblentz, Jim Abbott, Doug Barton, Tim
Herman, George Gephart, Jim Thielman, Ralph Leis, Don Butler, Tick Kohr, Ray Cluxton, Don Clere,
Rox Roberson, Dale Kuhn, Lowell Lucas, Joe Berger, Ronnie Cole, Don Heil, Fred Guenther. Dick
Blerley and George Lawrence were the student managers.
They were represented in the State Finals of the Prince of Peace Declamation Contest by Frank
Starkey.
Now they are on their last step of their long climb upward and about to enter a world full of
strife. They elected as class officers for their last year, Jim Abbott, president, Wayne Hurley, vice
president, Shirley Case, secretary, and Fred Guenther as treasurer. Student Council members were
Tim Herman, Roselyn Harris, Norma Stahl, and Jim Abbott. They were assisted through their last
year by Miss Wieser, Mr. Heistand, and Mr. Roehm. The outstanding events of the year were a three
act comedy entitled "Strictly Formal." The other events were Junior-Senior Reception, Baccalaureate,
the Prom, Class Night, Senior Picnic and at last Commencement.
Now that they have arrived at the top of the stairs, they will enter many different fields. To each
one of them, we sincerely wish success and happiness for the years to come.

STONEY’S SHARPS (NO FLATS)! 0,0
For the past two years, the M. H. S. Band has been under the leadership of
John Stone, who has striven to make this year a most successful one.
The band has performed many clever formations and steps for extra enter-
tainment both at home and out of town games. The climax of this years per-
formance was at the Troy game. In the “Billboard March," when our drum
major Marshall Whalen twirled a baton of fire, and couples from out of the
“Gay Ninety’s" danced. Then, the band danced off the field with the couples
following in a surrey drawn by a pony.
Among these fifty-five members are the drum major and three majorettes.
The color guards are Roland Bailey, Richard Beals, Bruce Ritter, and Buster
Shaffer. Officers are Don Gutheil, student director; Frank Starkey, Captain;
Kenneth Cox, First Lieutenant; Bob Thompson, Second Lieutenant; Beverly
Young and Bob Routzahn, Librarians.
Commencement exercises for the Seniors will be the last step in the "stair-
way to success" for the band in the year of '48.

The acappella choir is a new organization started just
this year by John Stone. There are sixty-four members in
this choir. Although the choir has been comparatively quiet
this year, we hope to hear more from them next year.
With Mr. Stone as the “guiding rail" on the "stairway to
success,” we are sure they will have no trouble accom-
plishing this.

“DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE PHANTOM BELLS TO RING?”
A house that has been deserted for years, in the walls of which mysterious bells ring at night,
people mysteriously disappear and reappear apparently, dead, then come to life. These are a few
of the things Laura Rhodes and her young step-mother encounter when they arrive at “The House
of the Bells," acting on written instructions from Laura's father, who has been in Europe and Intends
to meet the two women In this apparently haunted house. The two women are frightened, naturally,
but are amazed when Ned Carruthers appears with ten thousand dollars, saying that Mark Rhodes
has called him on the telephone, instructing him to withdraw this amount and bring it out to the
young Mrs. Rhodes. On top of this a detective makes his appearance, saying Mark Rhodes is de-
ceased. He was dead when the mysterious phone calls were made. So the man who telephoned his
wife was not Mark Rhodes at all. Many things happened with bewildering rapidity before the cur-
tain closed at the end of the play.

LIGHTS! CURTAIN! ACTION!
The senior class this year chose for their play, "Strictly Formal,” a three act comedy by William
Davidson.
"Strictly Formal" Is a story about teenagers—perhaps about some of us seniors, for two weeks
before the Junior-Senior dance, Jane Cutler didn't have a date. Elroy, who likes to put the shot,
Is always a last minute possibility, but George Ahern is Jane's current interest. Sally, Jane's girl
friend is sure of Jim and of George’s asking Jane until Marcia arrives from Atlanta. She is a south-
ern peach who just drips honey that all the fellows love. To help or to complicate matters, as the case
might be, we have Cindy Collins who solves all the problems as they might be unraveled in the
movies. In most cases things become even worse. As a culmination, Cindy uses some of Mr. Cutler’s
prize peonies and brings his wrath on her. Elroy saves the day and Jane, Sally and Cindy go to the
dance, even though Cindy had to call in the Air Force.

“NOW YELL"
This year the football and basketball teams were urged on to victories with the help of the fol-
lowing cheerleaders: Betty King, senior; Phyllis Criswell, senior; Shirley Case, senior; Betty Staubus,
senior; Joan Garber, junior, and Barbara Libbee, sophomore. Early In the year Joan Gephart, a
junior, joined the cheerleading crew, due to the withdrawal of Betty Staubus.
The Freshman cheerleaders also have been doing some mighty hearty yelling. The following
freshmen girls are Evelyn Gebhart, Jo Ann Stahl, Donna Patrick, Patty Kutz, and Evelyn Blackburn.

Class Poem
This senior class of forty-eight
Has finally reached the golden gate.
We have arrived at the top of the stairs
As each waits for success to be theirs.
It’s been a long, hard climb to the top
But never once have we wanted to stop.
Success—yes, that has been our aim
As each starts out to win his fame.
We've been together twelve happy years,
And have .seen each other through smiles and tears.
But now our school days all are through
And our lives will be entirely new.
We want to remember our President Jim
Because we owe a lot to him.
Then there's Butler, the athletic kid
Also Frank Starkey and all he did.
King and Case and spry Criswell
Could really lead you in a yell.
Eagle was our trumpet player,
Peggy Fox couldn't be gayer.
Richard Beals who was so smart,
Mary Helen Lewis sure knows her art.
Kohr and Cluxton, two great pals,
Burhl Short and all his gals.
Mlrus's Donna Libecap and Bishop's Joy Lang
Could really make things go with a bang.
Fred Guenther, always collecting money,
And Christy Kondoff who was so funny.
Then the Y-Teen President was Dotty Worrell
Boy, she is really quite a girl!
Cora who was the Homecoming Queen
And that cute dresser Carolyn Greene.
Don’t forget Clere, he was our king,
And Berger who made the “belles" ring.
Brockman and Aregood could never wait for the bell
And Janet Linebaugh, now known as Mrs. Penweli
Gebhart and Acord, two maids so fair
Cute Shafer and her naturally curly hair.
Smalley will some day be an M. D.
And Lucas and Lawrence morticians will be.
Sprague, Stahl and Harris—part of the RRR's
Wayne Hurley and Don Mack driving their cars.
Our majorettes were Thelma and Dot,
FIRST NATIONAL BANK
52
And Alfred Mayer, forget him not.
Agnes and Marylin were the gals that could sing,
The classroom character was Robert King.
Balzer and Ballard always willing to help out
Don Gutheil really got round about.
Student Council's president—good old Tim
Leis and Kuhn were sure full of vim.
Barton, Coblentz, and Heil belong to the same gang
And also Thielman who didn't give a hang.
Bennett and Zechar the jitterbug gals
Ronnie Cole always made his fouls.
Then there’s Dick Bierley who is so tall
And Kauffman who’s always on the ball.
Ginter, Galyean, and Tripp always had a smile
Eddie Mitman thought nothing was worth while.
Marshal Whalen really led the band;
Cummins, the best drummer in the land.
Engaged Doria Yoder was just new
Schlipp and Thomas had a lot to do.
Martin, Manning, and Mackey were so much fun,
While Edythe Rockey has her one and only one.
Joyce Phillabaum was everybody’s friend,
Reichard and Myers would help to the end.
Quiet (?) Gilbert, her first name is Jean
Phyllis Pressel so tall and lean.
George and Lowell with their last name the same
Some day Bucher will win his fame.
Kenny Cook, the kid from the farm,
Mitchell Gibson never did any harm.
Cox and Crawford with their quiet ways,
Yes, all of us will miss our school days.
Now we, Hetzel and Morrin, are proud to state
That we're members of this class of '48.
At the top of the stairs, we now all stand
And are waiting for God to take us by the hand.
He’ll lead us on into the best way of life
And will love and help us In joys or strife.

A History of Our High School
The history of Miamisburg began In 1797 when William Hole settled here. A
year later his parents, Zechariah and Phebe Hole, came with their family from Vir-
ginia and settled here. In 1799 a block house, around which a stockade was built
for protection against the Indians, became known as Holes' Station.
By 1818 the Holes had disappeared so when the first town lots were platted and
sold the name was changed to Miamisburg.
On May 1, 1818, twelve of the fifteen families of the community met and sub-
scribed $187 for the building of a schoolhouse. The second schoolhouse was built
in 1826 at the cost of $1,000. Here volunteers from the vicinity enlisted for the
Mexican War. As the population increased another building was needed. The third
one was built in 1834 and was the first to be built under the school laws of Ohio.
The next building was located at the Catholic Community house. School began there
January 9, 1850, with four teachers and there were 206 scholars enrolled
in the whole school. Later on several wings were added. During this time the High
School had been started and the first class graduated In 1 873.
High School was held there until the High School building as we know today
was completed in 1922. The cornerstone for this building was laid June 20, 1921.
It contained a copper box which holds eighteen articles. Some of the articles were
the clerk’s annual report for the year of 1920, copies of the Miamisburg News,
financial statements of three banks and two building associations of the town, a list
of the manufacturers and business firms of the town, stamps and coins, and various
other things. School began in the building on September 11, 1922. At that time they
decorated the old High School with black crepe and placed a sign which read
“Detour—Road Closed.”
Today the number of students in the High School numbers over five hundred and
there are 22 teachers. The number of students in the whole school is 1740. The
administrative instructions consists of 57. Due to the crowded condition and inade-
quate facilities another building has been proposed but only a part of the High
School will move there.
This year our school system is 130 years old. Each generation takes another step
in this stairway of education. We have taken our step and now will obtain another
education—that of the world.
