FOREWORD
KAGERLY and hopefully, we, the youth, look forward to the fu-
ture, one full of many opportunities which we shall find, as we
take our place in life. As an inspiration to the future Seniors and
as a final tribute to all here, we have compiled this book, full of
the.things we have done which will soon be a cherished memory.
We have included in this volume the various classes and activi-
ties of the entire student body, in hopes that we may give you a
comprehensive picture of our school life here.
We present to you our 1948 Bee Hive, not just a moment’s memo-
ries, but memories lasting forever.
DEDICATION
IT IS with the deepest sense of honor that we proudly dedicate
our 1948 Annual to Mr. W. N. Sheppard, who has been so loyal,
true, cooperative and kind throughout his years at King William
High School.
It has been through his wise and able leadership that we have
prospered on the road to success, and deep down in our hearts,
we know that Mr. Sheppard has won our greatest respect. With
these thoughts in mind, we gratefully dedicate the Bee Hive of
1948 to Mr. W. N. Sheppard.

Class Song
Just take a look around, Seniors all,
Paint a picture mem’ry will recall,
Tree shaded lawn and ivy covered wall.
Curved old walk and stately columns tall,
Paint them fast—so they will last,
Linking future with the past.
Love them now as we will when
The parting hour was way back then.
Tuck those treasured friends deep
Inside our heart, ’gainst the day
That on life’s way we start.
Though the sorrow’s great that
We part here, cling with spirit to
Alma Mater.
Chorus:
Alma Mater! King William High!
Hear our cry as we pass by,
Alma Mater! we’re ever nigh,
Ever loving King William High!
For your strength we thank you now, classmates.
For your help in efforts all. team mates.
For your cheer when you are near, classmates,
For your love and loyal esteem, mates.
All this from you, good and true,
Loyalty to you is due—
Thus ’twill be as years go by—
Our devotion always nigh.
Now is the time to tell each classmate
Fond adieu, we know the hour is late,
We's like to linger and to wait,
But farewell dear class of ’48!
Chorus:
Alma Mater! King William High!
Hear our cry as we pass by,
Alma Mater! we’re ever nigh.
Ever loving King William High!

CLASS HISTORY - IN THE DAYS OF OLD
Let’s go back to the fall of ’44 when twenty-two awkward, clumsy, lanky,
and green freshmen paraded toward destiny unknown.
T’.ie events of this year were many since our class decreased in number but
increased in school spirit, and the most important event of the year was our
freshman party. It turned out to be a ripping success. I shall never forget that
one-act Minstrel Show that wte presented which "brought out” everyone. This
ended our Freshman year but we were then only beginning our school spirit.
Our Sophomore year began with eighteen jolly, know-it-all students who
thought they were the most dignified that ever were. With our able sponsor,
Mrs. Taylor, we made plans through the year.
Our events of this year were few but great, since we spent most of our time
in hard study, we then found out what school life really was.
Our Junior Year just couldn’t be beat, we thought. We earned the name of
being the most agreeable class, that hasn’t yet been matched. We really had the
time of our lives this year because our events were many and varied. Take for ex-
ample, the Junior play, when Herbert Kelly got choked with an egg and Beverly
forgot his mandolin; but all in all it was considered a success. Next, we gave the
Seniors a party at the school in May, and we considered this the most joyful
event of the year. The party broke up about eleven. We will let you imagine
what the outcome was. The last but not least event was the getting of our rings
on the last day of school, about ten minutes before going home—were we happy
then!
We began our Senior Year with sixteen Seniors far different from those young
frollicking Sophomores who thought they knew it all, but now it is really known.
This year seems to fly, yet we feel as if we accomplished much for we elected
capable officers, who showed their worthiness by cooperating with everyone. We
received our cards in November. We went to see the Freedom Train; that, no
one will ever forget; it was a cold day for a warm breath of freedom. Most of us
saw the English drama, “The Barrett’s of Wimpole Street.” We enjoyed the play
very much even though we had a cold trip. We are looking forward to our
Senior Play. There, many scenes too will have cast their foreshadows into an
uncertain if not too distant future.
So ends our history for now, happy days that are gone, but not really gone be-
cause our future is but the past coming in another door.

CLASS PROPHECY
Let us turn the pages of time up ten years and see ourselves at the graduation
exercises of 1958.
During the entertaining part of the program, did you hear that opera singer?
It was the voice of Evelyn Smith, who is quite a singer. The people are very
happy to have her back with them. Wow! Do you recognize the leader of the
orchestra that accompanied her; well it is John Farmer. We always felt that he
would make a successful musician. Well! Look who just walked through the
door, if it isn’t Mary Franklin Atkinson and Williard Davis. They told me that
they were married shortly after school was out. We are very happy to have
Bowie Beasley as our guest speaker, who is Professor in a near-by college. Why
there’s Hallie Gertrude Martin, someone just told me that she is a model for
Powers, which is in New York. We remember that smile she always had when
she was in school; we knew it would take her a long way.
Here comes that handsome army officer, Edward Blake, and his wife, the
former Jeanne Commins. We thought that romance would add up to this.
Through the crowd I see a tall, sandy-haired man, well if it isn’t Beverly Com-
mins. They tell me he is the owner of the well known Commins’ Truck Line in
Bichmond. Over in one corner I see George Poynter and his wife, the former
Gladys Ford. They have a little son they named William George Poynter III.
We knew that Gladys would make a good housewife. Just guess who is playing
ball for the Brooklyn Dodgers, well it is Clinton Gantt—we thought that he
would make baseball his career. Eris Lee Adams is stenographer for the Simp-
kins Electrical Appliance Company of Chicago. We hear that she is making
very good time with the owner.
Have you heard the news? We are getting a new attorney in the county, what
do you know? It is Herbert Kelly; he really could argue when he was going to
school. I suppose you know about Harry Whitt, who became famous over night.
He published his book, “Exciting Days at King William.” We felt that Harry
would do this because of some of the good works he did in school. In the door
comes that famous horse trainer, Lily Mae Gatewood. She now has her horse,
“Billy,” in shape for the Kentucky Derby. The betting is ten to one for “Billy.”
Herbert Lipscomb is owner of a large ranch out in Wyoming. He is hunting
“D-E-A-R” for his hobby. We saw him in Richmond with his large western hat on.
Charles Reed has really made some progress since he graduated from King
William; he is owner of a large lumber company. Peggy Reed is a secretary at
the Motor Vehicle Division in Richmond. She always was a good typist. Re-
member when we wrote our history in 1948 we said that our future would merely
be the past coming in another door. That certainly holds true tonight; for most
of our happy experiences of the past have developed into the happiness we see
around us tonight.
JUST IMAGINE
Charles Reed singing over the radiol
Eris Lee Adams not dressed neatly!
John Farmer 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 200 lbs!

Mary Franklin Atkinson without a boy!
Clinton Gantt not interested in Baseball!
Gladys Mae Ford without “Buck”!
Herbert Kelly not arguing!

And let us work with all our might,

We’ll join and give a royal welcome
For the good of our old school!
Its K. W. H. S.l It’s K. W. H. S.l
The pride of everyone that’s here.
Coine on ye old Grads, come on ye young lads,
It’s old K. W. H. S., we cheer! Rah! Rah!
Now is the time boys, to make a big noise,
No matter what the people say.

So, Hail to K. W. H. S., Hail!
