Mr. Wallace has been a teacher of
science and mathematics in our school
for eleven years. He sponsors the Ac-
tivity Board, Hi-Y, and is head sponsor
of the senior class. He is ready at all
times to unselfishly give his time to be
the friend and counselor we so often
need. He demands and brings forth the
very best in his students.
We hereby pay sincere tribute to
Mrs. Fleming and Mr. Wallace.
To Mrs. Myrtle Fleming and Mr. Le-
land Wallace, we, The Hatchet Staff of
1946, wish to dedicate this yearbook.
Mrs. Fleming has been with us four
years as social science teacher and is
sponsor of "The Hatchet" this year as
well as a Senior class sponsor. She has
been a kind and patient friend and is
a person we all admire and respect.

Under the able guidance of the Administration and Board of Education, Wash-
ington Rural saw another successful year: The faculty members, through their ceaseless
efforts and wise guidance have maintained for us, and with us, a school of which we
are indeed proud. The board members have contributed unselfishly of their time and
effort.

ALMA MATER HYMN
On the plains of dear old Kansas,
Tapestried in green.
Rise the walls of Washington—
Hail to thee our queenl
Chorus:
Hail our high school
Dear old high school,
May she ever be
Light that guides and guard us always
On life's dark deep sea.
Far removed from all the tumult,
Challenging the eye,
Stands the school we all love dearly—
Stands our Washington High.
Chorus:
Lift the chorus ever upward
Mount it to the sky
Rod and White before us proudly:
"Hail to Washington Highl"

Class Tlisioru
Four long years ago, in the beginning of the air age, one hundred and fifteen eager freshmen landed in
the halls of Washington Rural High School with Mr. Huyck at the controls and Mr. Wallace as co-pilot
and head sponsor. They were assisted by hostesses Mrs. Hollander and Miss Dietrick. Bob Harrison, now
with the U. S. Navy, was elected as the first class president, with George Wilson, vice-president; Clarence
Priddy, secretary; and Leonard Amos, treasurer.
Seven girls and three boys were admitted into the Red Pepper Club, while thirty-two girls formed the
freshmen girls' glee club. Joan Bigham, freshman candidate, reigned as queen of the Bond Contest. Thirty
boys lettered in freshmen sports.
Under the sponsorship of Mr. Wallace, Miss Barricklow, and Mr. Wren, one hundred sophomores re-en-
tered their dear old high." Officers that year were president, Jack Peerson; vice-president, Joan Bigham;
secretary, Dorothy Ayers: treasurer, Virginia Cole. Lucille Theno won an essay contest on citizenship. The
sophomores were well represented in band, glee club, football, basketball, and various activities.
With Dwane Crowl as president; Clarence Priddy, vice-president: Doris Jean Carlson, secretary; and
Bill Moon, treasurer: ninety-three ambitious juniors began their third year of high school. The sponsors were
Mr. Wren, Miss Covell and Mrs. Fleming.
Dwane Crowl was president of Hi-Y with Jack Peerson, secretary, and Clarence Priddy, treasurer. Joan
Bigham was elected secretary of Y-Teens. Doris Jean Carlson and Elaine Russell served as drum-major and
school cheerleader respectively.
The honor of first Hatchet King" went to Dick Richards, junior candidate. Eight Juniors were among
the cast of "The Lucky Jade," the school operetta.
One of the highlights of the year was the successful junior play, "He Was A Gay Senorita," under the
direction of Mrs. Vivian McCaffrey. The cast was composed of Dwane Crowl' Donald Farrell, Bill Trapp,
Joan Bigham, Mary Ann Fehrenbach, Roy Barker, Elaine Russell, La Verne Taylor, James Duffy, Mildred
Jambrosic, Esther Bechtold and Rose Mihelcic.
The climax of the year was the junior-senior prom which was considered one of the best in the history of
the school.
In September, 1946, the doors of Washington Rural opened to eighty-three potential atomic bombs, the
largest senior class in the history of the school. They were led by Bill Smith, president; Clarence Priddy,
vice-president; Charlene Riedesel, secretary; and Roy Barker, treasurer. Mr. Wallace, Mrs. Fleming, and
Miss Gatchell ably assisted the mighty seniors.
Leaders in various school activities included Bill Smith, student council president; Lucille Theno, Y-Teen
president; Clarence Priddy, Hi-Y president; Jack Peerson, W-club president, and Doris Jean Carlson,
drum-major.
Jack Peerson and Joan Bigham were Homecoming king and queen. The king and queen of the annual
Hatchet Ball were Dwane Crowl and Doris Jean Carlson.
Twelve seniors participated in the operetta, "The Golden Trail." "A Murder Has Been Arranged," the
highly successful senior play under the direction of Miss Ruth Ann Gatchell, included Clarence Priddy,
James Duffy, Lucille Theno. Melva Bryant, Roy Barker, Virginia Johnson, Joan Bigham, Bill Smith, and
Virginia Cole in the cast.
The National Honor Society of Washington Rural High School was increased with the admission of
twelve seniors into its chapter. They were: Lucille Theno, Dwane Crowl. Melva Bryant, Mary Ann Fehren-
bach, Bill Trapp, Joan Bigham, Wayne Smith, Doris Jean Carlson, Bill Smith, James Duffy, Roy Barker, and
Dorothy Bledsoe. Valedictorian and salutatorian honors were awarded Lucille Theno and Dwane Crowl
respectively.
Junior-senior Prom—Baccalaureate—Class Night—and at last Graduation! The seniors of "47" have
definitely established a never-to-be-forgotten record in scholarship, leadership and service.

The Washington Rural High School chapter
of the National Honor Society was organized
in 1936 under the sponsorship of Miss Covell.
There were thirteen charter members. The
members are selected by a point system. The
basic factors are scholarship, leadership, serv-
ice and character. Fifteen per cent of the
seniors are chosen. Recommendation for mem-
bership in the National Honor Society is one-
of the highest honors Washington Rural has
to offer its students.
The creed: In all humility I pledge myself to
be honorable, to serve, to lead aright, to up-
hold scholarship, and thus keep alive the
sacred flame.
The attainment of the Summerfield
Scholarship by these two individuals,
for two successive years, speaks very
highly for the scholarship requirement
met by the members of the Wash-
ington High School chapter of the
National Honor Society.

During the intermission of the dance the winners, Doris Jean Carlson and Dwane
Crowl were crowned Hatchet King and Queen of 1947 by Mr, Wallace. The remaining

The march of time was the theme carried out at this year's ball. Jack Miller's Or-
chestra provided the fine music for the dance.

Washington Rural completed an unsuccessful
1946-47 Basketball season winning three games and
losing eleven. The Wildcats placed fourth in the
East Kansas League. Never meeting up to pre-sea-
son expectations the Wildcats lost to Olathe, Leav-
enworth, North Kansas City, Rosedale, Turner, and
Ruskin before defeating Bonner. The Wildcats failed
to continue to win and went to lose to Olathe, Leav-
enworth, Rosedale and Turner while they were de-
feating Paola twice and losing to Bonner once.
The Wildcats were under the able direction of
Coach Eugene Stewart.

The Washington Rural track team under the direction of Coach E. W. Stewart had
a fair season. Their medly relay team, composed of Cecil Rogers, Leonard Amos,
Charles Duderstadt, and Dwane Crowl, was outstanding. They took first place in the
East Kansas League, first place at the K. U. Relays and placed fourth in the State
Track Meet. Dwane Crowl was captain of the team.

The Washington Wildkittens, coached by Wallace Wren, won two games and lost seven in this
year's basketball season. Their speed made up for their lack of height and although they won but
two games they developed some future material for the varsity.
The Wildkittens tied one game and lost five in football. Their light line gave a good account of
themselves against heavy opposition, and Coach Wren developed two or three prospects for the
varsity. Tommy Cain and Jerry Thompson were Co-captains of the team. The back field men were
Dutfon and Cain in the wing back position, Hawkins, the spinner, and Eubanks in the taleback posi-
tion.
The line was rather light, however, they gave a good account of themselves against heavy opposi-
tion. The linemen were: Thompson, Muder, Howard, Wasko, Fehrenbach, Johnson, Palmer and Eisman.
