MR. EDWARD J. McRAY .
Administration
Mackenzie has always been fortunate to have such outstanding
men and women in its administration. Although our principal and assistant principal, Mr. Joseph Pinnock and Mr. Edward McRay, have been
here but a short time, they have shown a great interest in all our school
activities and have become friends of each of us. Although some of
us have been at Mackenzie longer than either Mr. Pinnock or Mr. McRay,
we have only praise for their way of governing us, the student body.
For three years they have listened to our problems and helped us. We
hope that they are as pleased with us as we are with them.

SENIOR SPEAKERS' BUREAU
Heralds of the news, Mackenzie's famed
orators, are members of the Speakers' Bureau.
Headed by Mr. Raymond Ford, both the
junior and the senior clubs have always been
able to furnish speakers to advertise and pro-
mote various drives and similar events during
the term. Several members were selected to
speak at various general assemblies through
the year.
MACKENZIE RADIO
"On the air" and the student announcer
brings you the news of the week from Mac-
kenzie's own radio station, M.R.U.
The students of Miss Glendora Forshee s
second-hour radio class alternate in producing the weekly broadcasts. When they are
not preparing the Monday programs, they
enjoy producing and directing their own plays.
Some members of the radio class have
been selected to appear in Board of Education shows over local stations.

12B Play
Tryouts, rehearsals, props, memorizing .. . opening night... and mark down
another theatrical smash hit. Move over,
Broadway — here comes Mackenzie
with Cyrano! Cyrano de Bergerac, produced by the I2B class and directed by
Mrs. Faith Gray, was presented in April
when it proved itself to be a successful
laugh provoker as well as a tear jerker.
The first duel in Mackenzie's history was
staged in this production. The cast of
the five-act comedy by the French dramatist, Edmond Rostand, was headed by
Don Mixon as Cyrano. The feminine
lead, Roxanne, was played by Dolores
Becker on the first night. Hope Schaidler was Roxanne at the Saturday night
performance.

STAGE CREW
From behind the scenes we find the
unsung heroes of our auditorium activities.
Yes, they are the members of the stage
crew. They were responsible for construct-
ing the risers used in the concert, arranging
the stage properties for the play, and de-
veloping the lighting effects desired at our
assemblies. These boys are technicians
who deserve our applause.

DIAL STAFF
If you happened to be wandering down the second
floor—any school day, of course—and wondered what
the commotion was at the end of the corridor, it was, no
doubt, the Dial staff trying to beat their deadline. The
staff, which numbers more than fifty students, is divided
into three departments: news, feature, and photography.
The work of each department is split up according to each
member's own particular talents. The Dial is the only
high school magazine in Detroit and has won highest
recognition from two national press associations. Once
every month we look forward to "Dial Day" when we
reap the fruits that came from all that hub-bub at the
end of the corridor.

STAG STAFF
’’Get that write-up in!" "We've got to sell more STAGS!"
these familiar phrases have been ringing in the ears of the mem-
bers of the STAG STAFF for the past semester. Our two enthusi-
astic sponsors, Mr. S. Polk (Editorial Advisor) and Mr. H. Eiges
(Business Advisor) have constantly been on the job to give us that
extra bit of "encouragement."
Even though many of the staff members are new this semes-
ter, they have all done excellent work in their respective jobs.
The problem of group arrangement, write-ups, photographs, art,
and the general arrangement of the STAG, constitute the bulk of
the work of this staff. ■
Perhaps that over-enthusiastic STAG salesman has literally
driven you mad trying to sell you that STAG, or that "extra STAG."
But now, as you thumb lightly through these pages — doesn't it
seem worth it!

The bell rings! . . . Dash to your locker . . . throw in your
books . . . slide down the bannister and arrive at the audi-
torium door in time for a cheery, little usher to leer at you
and slam the door in your face. Inaugurating their new
policy of starting with the bell, the junior and senior ushers
took a huge task upon themselves. Armed with many new
members, the guardians of the auditorium are on the march
to make our programs as fine as possible.

the active I2B Congress. This
group, under the direction of
Miss Janice Gollwitzer, was re-
sponsible for planning the tra-
ditional I2B-I2A dance given
for the graduates, and the suc-
cessful I2B play.
This group has spent many
hours to plan successfully the
activities that have provided
pleasant memories not only for
the 12B's, but also for the re-
maining student body.

CONGRESS
The representatives
of the I IA class under
the supervision of Mr.
Gerald Baysinger, form
a very able congress.
Their president, Robert
Moore, presides at the
meetings where they
discuss the ideas
brought from their
homerooms concerning
class activities. The real
object of the congress
is to teach the members
how to govern success-
fully.

ganization. Planning activities to ac-
quaint the members of their class with
one another, the congress has made the
I I B's a unified group. Headed by their
president, Beverly McClure, the con-
gress has brought in speakers that could
best help them to draw up plans for ac-

STUDENT COUNCILS
Out of the hustle and bustle of the student councils there emerge
many suggestions for the improvement of Mackenzie. The Junior Coun-
cil is composed of ninth and tenth graders and the Senior Council is
made up of eleventh and twelfth graders. Besides the regularly elected
students from the homerooms, there are also honorary members.
During the meetings, when a suggestion or complaint is brought to
their attention, a committee is appointed to handle the matter. As
soon as the committee has done all within its power to correct the situa-
tion, it reports back to the council, and then in turn to the homerooms.
Through this procedure, innumerable things have been accomplished
that have contributed greatly to the success of our school.

POLITICAL SCIENCE
One of the newest, most original, and most
controversial organizations at Mackenzie is the Po-
litical Science Club. Its enthusiastic members
meet weekly to discuss pending political problems.
They have had prominent speakers at various
meetings or have arranged to have them lecture
at general assemblies. Only in its first year, it is
already a well-established club that is becoming
more and more popular among the students as it
becomes better known.
HUMAN RELATIONS COUNCIL
Under the sponsorship of Mr. Harold Bailey,
this club is composed of students who want to be-
come better acquainted with various nationalities,
races, and religions.
Through their series of guest speakers, they
help to promote a genuine interest in human re-
lations among the students of Mackenzie.
Because of its active programs, this club has
done much toward lessening the prejudices which
arise in a city made up of many religious and cul-
tural groups.

R.O.T.C. OFFICERS
The R.O.T.C. Officers Club is
composed of fifth and sixth semester
and non-commissioned officers who
wish to promote and develop leader-
ship. During the winter months the
members are found on the rifle range
studying military tactics and organiza-
tions. In the summer they solve, out
of doors, the tactical problems that
had previously confronted them in the
classroom. These cadets also serve as
instructors of new cadets.

EARLY MORNING PATROL
Started way back in 1935, the Early Morn-
ing Patrol is still one of the most active volun-
teer organizations in the school. Under the
eagle eye of Mr. McVittie, these early birds
arrive at school at about 7:15 every morning.
Their job is to keep the students who arrive
early down on the first floor and out of the
lockers. Three service points is their only pay-
ment for their ceaseless battle with the rest
of the student body.

—that is the motto of the Lost and
Found. This busy group of students,
under the sponsorship of Mr. Myer
Beresh, can, and will, with the prop-
er identification, produce almost
any kind of trinket, book, or gar-
ment. The members of the staff are
always to be found busily returning
these lost articles to their absent-
minded owners.

to this work, the staff, under the supervision of
their sponsor, Mr. Harvey Meyer, handle the
sale of concert and play tickets.
Foreign Language
FRENCH CLUB
Here is an active organization which
was founded to further an interest in
France. The members have studied her
language, people, culture, and customs.
These students are from all grades and
from all French classes. Under the super-
vision of Mrs. Muriel Robinove, their many
activities have included dramatic skits, mo-
vies, music, and occasional short trips. The
French Club has certainly proven that
learning a language can be fun.

SPANISH CLUB
El Club Pan American and El Club Espanol, the two Spanish clubs
of Mackenzie, were responsible for the Pan American Fiesta, given in
the auditorium in April. At their meetings speakers have lectured on
Mexico, South America, and on Latin American customs and culture.
In addition, talks were given on Latin American music.
Each club holds meetings every second Friday, and from time to
time has had movies in Spanish which were shown in South America to
gain the cooperation of the Latin American countries during the war.

LIBRARY
STAFF
The Library Staff, under the
able supervision of their two
sponsors, Miss Helen Whipple
and Mrj. Ethel Yabroff, handle
the complete circulation of
books that belong to our
school library. From the mo-
ment a book enters the library
until it is taken out, it is han-
dled by your own classmates.
Although the staff is a large
organization1, it is always glad
to welcome new people who
are interested in joining and
who meet the requirements for
membership.

"A" BAND
The trumpets blare . ... The drums roll . . . . Strike up the band!
In their snappy blue and grey uniforms, the A-Band plays, marches, and
has a rollicking good time.
Under the baton of Mr. Samuel Emmer, the band is rated one of
the finest bands in the city. They have been asked to perform over
the radio in addition to their regularly scheduled activities.

STRING ORCHESTRA
The String Orchestra has gone classical this year. Under the di-
rection of Mr. Carl Senob, these students have learned much this term
about interpreting "heavier" music. They added a more serious air
to the Spring Festival by the selection of some of their pieces.
CONCERT ENSEMBLE
Did you wonder who it was that furnished the intermission music
at the senior play? It was the concert ensemble, under the direction
of Mr. Carl Senob. This group of musicians, who are also members of
the band or orchestra, are gaining valuable experience in learning to
play in small groups.

HI-Y CLUB
The Mackenzie Gray Chapter of the Hi-Y is a strictly male organi-
zation, under the supervision of Mr. LeRoy Campbell. A high school
branch of the Young Men's Christian Association, it was formed to cre-
ate, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high
standards of Christian character. The name, "Hi-Y", has become sy-
nonymous with the issuing of lockers and the selling of "This is Mac-
kenzie" handbooks. The Hi-Y, however, is best known for the trophy
which it presents at the end of each term to the most valuable athlete
in the school.

be the basis for all of its activities—and a very active club it is! The
Senior Y-Teens at Mackenzie make up the blue chapter. Since all the
chapters are affiliated with the Young Women s Christian Association,
they hold many of their activities in that building. With Mrs. Helen
Sargent as sponsor, the group meets on alternate weeks and draws up
plans for programs, teas, service projects, and occasional parties. The
girls in this senior group belong to the eleventh and twelfth grades.

the Young Women's Christian Associatior. Their purpose is to learn
to grow to be better persons in body, mind, and spirit and also to grow
in friendship with the peoples of all races, religions, and nationalities.
They are a service as well as a social organization at Mackenzie. Spon-
sored by Miss Grace McPherson, the Junior Y-Teens are girls from.the
ninth and tenth grades.

Batter up! — There's the windup, the pitch, and, — why, yes,
that's the Mackenzie baseball team! In the lineup we find such out-
standing athletes as Julius Russu and Jim Peters, catchers; Emil Fede-
row, Jerry Wallis, and Carl Lewis, pitchers; Bill Ray and Louis Cooper,
first basemen; Ronald Burk and Bob Moore; second basemen; Ralph
Jentsch and Don Pflieger, shortstops; Jack Loomis, third base; Ray Lane
and Ken Starbird, outfielders. Coach Andrews merits an extra round
of applause for his work.
GOLF TEAM
Three boys from last year's team are back
again this year and hope to go all the way to
the city championship. The team consists of four
varsity players and four reserve players. At pres-

VARSITY BASKETBALL
Two scoring records were broken by this year's
quintef. Although the team had a mediocre season,
the team managed to collect the highest total of
points that a Mackenzie team has ever reached in
a single game. In this same game with Wilbur
Wright, Pat Clysdale netted 24 points to write a
new individual mark into Mackenzie's record books.
Pat was also honored by being chosen on an all-city
team.
This season inaugurated a new set-up in the;
schedule. Mackenzie played every metro team on
the west side once. This replaced the old system-
of meeting only the schools in the 'northwest sec-
tion. Mackenzie was victorious overSffve schools,
while losing to four.

RESERVE RASKETRALL
Some of you may refer to the reserve eagers as the
' fall guys" for the Varsity team, but this year, our junior
team came into its own by winning all but one of its
league games. Although it was eliminated in the semi-
final round by the team that later became city champs, this season was
by far the most successful a Stag reserve team has ever had. Because
of this, the boys and their coach, Dick Frankoski, deserve praise and
our hope for "good shooting" in their coming seasons. We are look-
ing to them to become champs in the future.

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL
Under Coach Frankoski, the Boys' Freshman Basketball Team de-

games but fought in a way very much to its credit. Joe Zitney, cap-
tain, deserves special merit for his fine work. These twelve boys are
new to the school but they have proved themselves to be victorious
even under unfamiliar conditions. These players are the prospects for
a future varsity team—and very good prospects they are!

HOME ECONOMICS CLUB
Membership to the Home Economics Club is
open to all girls who are interested in becoming
better homemakers. These girls, under the direc-
tion of Mrs. Crystal Rowe, gain valuable experi-
ence in planning meals and teas and in learning
how to decorate and refurnish. Through this club,
some of the girls have become interested in home
economics as a profession. Some of the activities
of the past semester included taking field trips.
making Easter baskets for settlement houses, and
attending exhibits.
RECEPTION COMMITTEE
Visitors, including Superintendent of Schools, Arthur Dondineau,
and representatives of other schools, have received their first impres-
sions of Mackenzie by being graciously welcomed by members of the
Reception Committee. This group of students, sponsored by Miss
Waterbury, makes up one of Mackenzie's most prominent and efficient
committees. The girls are chosen for their social poise, character, and
scholastic records. Other qualifications are a knowledge and apprecia-
tion of the school, and previous school service.
CAMERA CLUB
The Camera Club was organized in 1937 by its present sponsor,
Mr. Richard Walker. There are at present a beginning group — the
Junior Club, and an advanced group—the Senior Club. Each group has
its own officers, and follows a regular schedule of activities for the term.
The Senior Club works on special projects such as toning and portrait
work. From this senior group, Mr. Walker recommends photographers
for special school activities such as work on the Dial or the Stag. Occa-
sionally a job outside of school arises from inquiries for especially tal-
ented students.

12A CONGRESS
Spearheading the works of the gradu-
ating class is the I2A Congress, presided
over by Ed Bice, president. Aiding and
abetting Ed are James LoPrete, vice-presi-
dent; Dick Slaker, secretary; and Bill Ray,
treasurer. Serving on the Congress is one
elected representative from each of the
eighteen 12A homerooms. Under the aus-
pices of Miss Cecilia Maier, its faculty
chairman, the Congress has planned many
activities. The "Fools' Frolic", a dance
given in April for the benefit of the Stag,
was planned by its members. This term the
Congress members worked in committees
making plans for Parents' Night, Class Day,
outings, and the commencement program.
This group also decides what the traditional
class gift to the school shall be. With the
cooperation of the Mackenzie Club, this
organization planned the I2A trip. For the
first time in Mackenzie's history, the Con-
gress arranged to have bi-weekly meetings
in the auditorium for their class.
The graduates have not forgotten their
sponsors, either, and to them they extend
a special thanks for the time and effort they
have put forth on behalf of the 12A class.

NATIONAL HONOR
SOCIETY
Membership in the National Honor
Society is an achievement based on three
years' effort—a reward richly deserved. It
is no mere trifle that these students have
maintained a "B", or better, scholastic
standing and have always displayed the fine
qualities of service, leadership, and char-
acter. They have also shown a more-than-
average interest in school affairs and,
through their bulletin boards, they are ac-
tive in keeping the school well-informed on
scholarships. Mackenzie's chapter of the
National Honor Society was organized in
1932. Since that time the members have
been elected from the I2B and I2A class-
es. New students are acquainted with the
National Honor Society requirements
through a series of talks given in their home-
rooms during the term. The society spon-
sored a study campaign this term for both
new and old Mackenzie students, and it is
very proud of the results. Sponsored by
Mrs. Ethel Yabroff and Mr. Rex Carletti,
these students have shown a reliability
which they are sometimes called upon to
use in acting as substitutes for absent
teachers.

"The time has come," the walrus said, "to
talk of many things . . . . "
As seniors, the time has also come for us to
look back over our four years spent at Mackenzie,
years filled to overflowing with school events and
activities, and "talk of many things."
We must talk of our athletic events . . . foot-
ball and basketball games . . . of our song fests,
band bounces, spring and Christmas concerts,
school plays, and our senior activities. These in-
clude our class outings at Rouge Park, our Parents'
Night, the class trip, the senior prom, our Class
Day program, and------------------graduation.
Indeed, the time has come to talk of all these
things, yet strangely enough at this time the words
do not seem to flow as readily as did the events.
As each succeeding class emerges from the realm
of their past life at Mackenzie into that of adult-
hood, a certain air of solemnity carries throughout

this passing as the realization strikes them that this
truly is the finale of all the knowledge and experi-
ences which Mackenzie has given them. Our class
is no exception.
To Mackenzie we are grateful for the good
fellowship and fairness in the game which she has
endeavored to teach us. We must say "endeav-
or", since it is idle talk to say we have learned
these things until they have been justly proven.
Therefore, our future performances will show
whether we have learned to play the game so that
when we later look back upon our high school days,
Mackenzie, in turn, may say to us, "Thank you,
class of June, '47!"

SENIOR DIARY
9B —
That’s when we were acquainted with elevator passes.
Oh. — those seniors, telling us that was the only way to
those unfamiliar classrooms on time!
9 A —
Studying — getting better acquainted with school.
And that LUNCHLINE — those seniors again. No cuts,
fellas!
I0B —
Still studying — but we're just beginning to get into
school affairs.
I0A —
We welcome the rest of our classmates who arrived
late. Membership cards were introduced this term. Every-
one has to have one. Membership to what? We don't re-
member being ASKED to join anything!
I IB —
We're upper-class men now and we're just beginning
to enjoy those special little privileges given to the morn-
ing students. For instance, getting up when the rooster
crows and groping our way to school every morning using
tape to keep our eyes open.
HA —
They started issuing courtesy passes to those lucky few
who managed to meet the standards — it seems that the
rest of us stopped studying somewhere along the line. We
tried our hand at world affairs this term. Some of us were
delegates to the student United Nations assembly held at
the Rackham Building.
I2B —
We'd all be good farmers now. Got in a bad habit—
can't sleep after the sun comes up. Just one of the high-
lights of the term was our election of class officers. After
the confusion of it all we found that Bill Ray was president;
Ed Bice, vice-president; Audrey Tregembo, secretary; and
Jim LoPrete, treasurer — and then they weren't even
initiated! The senior play .RESERVE TWO FOR MURDER,
was given. We gave a dance for the graduating class and
they in turn invited us to their Class Day program. Just
wait 'til next term!
I2A —
Hey, freshie! — want to buy an elevator pass? I'm
graduating so I won't need mine anymore. Yep — here
we are! Big wheels at last! Had another election this
term. Guess what happened—our officers are all boys!
Ed Bice is president; Jim LoPrete, vice-president; Dick Sla-
ker, secretary; and Bill Ray, treasurer. Our class cruise was
at the end of May and it was plenty cold! Brrr! After we
got back it was no time at all until Class Day. Didn't we
look nice in our caps and gowns! After that came com-
mencement and the prom. Now we're not seniors any-
more — we're alumni!
