AS THIS, the 1946 Bee Hive, goes to press, we, the
students of King William High School feel an even
greater responsibility than ever before. As citizens of the
United States and of the World, the formulation of a lasting-
peace is the challenge that is set before us. This year has
brought us Victory, and as future builders of America, we
shall do all in our power to seek for and build upon the
highest and truest ideals, that all nations, under God, shall
have a foundation of peace that no war shall ever shake.
In this book, we have gathered some of the interests,
aims and ideals which will show only a small part of the
responsibility that we have taken.
We arc proud to present to you the 1946 Bee Hive.

Senior Qlass History
M
IT WAS with nervous anticipation that we, as Freshmen, entered our first year of high school life in
the fall of 1942, but it wasn't long before we felt that we could shoulder any responsibility that might
present itself. The first event of that year was the election of our class officers. Later in the session, several
of the members of our class took part in a Floor Show, which was presented by the school, and then
before one could realize it. spring rolled around, summer passed, and quickly we realized that we were
dignified sophomores. We again elected our class officers, and then began making plans for the coming
year. We presented a one-act play entitled, “It Pays to Be a Poogle”. We felt very proud that the
name of our school paper. The Busy Bee, was chosen by a member of our class.
Our Junior year couldn't be beat, so we thought. There were so many exciting events. Our first
business was to elect officers for our class. This done, we began work on a one-act play, “Elmer”, which
was presented in chapel, and also was given as a part of the annual Glee Club program during Easter.
Our Junior-Senior party proved very successful. What every Junior looked forward to especially,
was ordering the class rings. It was wonderful just to feel that much like a Senior!
It doesn't seem possible, but we wouldn't have it any other way, than just being Seniors . . . just
about the grandest feeling in the world. Electing class officers seems to have been our first objective.
Early in the fall, the class enjoyed a trip to Richmond, visiting a Wild Life exhibit and other places of
interest. The entire class took part in the Christmas Glee Club program. Ordering the commencement
invitations was the next event, but the thing that excited us the most, was, the receiving of our rings,
for which we had waited so patiently and so long. We presented our Senior play, “Bashful Mr. Bobbs”,
in the spring, and later in the session, enjoyed immensley the Junior-Senior party.
The biggest thrill of our four years was the receiving of our diplomas in May. This concluded
the history of our High School days, but was only a beginning of the history of our years that lay ahead.
Just Imagine!
Marie .Adams playing basketball!
Jeanne Alexander without brains!
Virginia Lee Chenault not laughing!
Ann Clawson with coal black hair!
Willard Davis not grinning!
Ambrose Edwards without chewing gum!
Thurman Farmer taking life seriously!
Edwin Moren in a hurry I
Ruth Powell without Raymond !
Phyllis Smith raising her voice!
Margaret Anne White without a sailor!
Peggy Wright without Harry on her mind!

Senior Prophecy
WELL, Hello Folks! Here it is graduation time at King William High School, and the Seniors
of 1956 look very impressing in their caps and gowns. I also see quite a few of my old school
mates too. The class of ’46 has certainly made a mark for itself in the last ten years. I think I will tell
you about each of these graduates as 1 see them tonight.
There’s one now! Jeanne Alexander, a noted woman baseball player, according to the newspapers,
has just returned from a tour with the New York Yankees. Those home-runs she used to make for King
William’s softball team were thrilling. With her is the famed Editor of the Arte York Times, Phyllis
Smith. How well I can remember when she was the Editor of our little school paper. 1 always felt
she would make newspaper work her career.
Yep, and there by the front door is another of my ole school pals, the former Margaret Anne White,
with her husband who used to be in the Navy. They have an adorable little girl, and bless my soul if
she isn’t wearing the monogram her mother was awarded as Cheer Leader in school.
Ammonia, quick, somebody! All the girls in the auditorium have started swooning, for who should
come in—followed by a host of admirers and fans—but that famous film star, direct from Hollywood,
Willard Davis. Ahem, girls, I honestly don’t blame you! Willard always was a heart breaker!!
Can it be? Yes, it is Ann Clawson. I haven’t seen her since we said goodbye at her graduation.
She has been the private secretary of the president of an important pulpwood corporation. We under-
stand she will become his wife in the very near future.
Here comes another of my pals, the former Ruth Powell, with her husband who is a Colonel in the
Reserve Militia of King and Queen County. She has a little son now, and 1 hear she is going to send
him to Military School as soon as he is old enough. Good idea, 1 say!
Well sir, I sec that beloved player and singer of western ballads. Thurman Farmer. I can remember
his musical talent in school and his playing for square dances. More fun! I understand he and his
wife arc here on their vacation.
Up on the front row I have just spied Edwin Moren and his wife. The principal informed me that
he gave a chicken-in-thc-rough party for the Seniors last night. He has a nice chicken farm, and owns
one of the most important bus lines in the country. How vividly 1 remember that old school bus he
used to drive.
Who is that muscle-man over there, I wonder? For goodness sakes, it’s Ambrose Edwards. He is
a traveling salesman for a concern that sells farm machinery and implements, but 1 think he missed his
calling with that physique. He should have been a wrestler!
Look! If it isn't Marie Adams. Let me find out what she is doing these days- She tells me that she
is modeling clothes at Miller & Rhoads and she really looks the Ritz. She always was one of the best
dressed girls at school.
That couldn't be Peggy Wright coming in—yep, it is—and her husband. We understand she was
married as soon as she graduated. She always did love her Harry. She has a darling little boy with
blue eyes and blond hair just like his father.
It seems 1 have re-lived my school days in these few moments, for not since their graduation has
the entire class of '46 been together as they are tonight. There is a strange enchantment all around me.
and I feel the warmness of old friends touching my heart.
Well, 1 had better go and get a seat as the lights arc dimming and it looks like graduation exercises
are beginning once again.

Busy Bee History
WHEN the idea first originated to start a school paper in King William High School in September
of 1943, the Commercial Chib held a contest to select a name for this new creation. Anyone
in the Commercial Club was eligible to submit a name as this Club was responsible for the idea. The
faculty of the school served as judges and chose the name Busy Bee, which had been suggested by Thurman
Farmer, then a Sophomore. A first issue came off the press that October consisting of four pages con-
taining bits of news of the school and a few advertisements that had been obtained from the local mer-
chants. Each month since then the Busy Bee has grown in size and in popularity. Local merchants
have been cooperative in giving ads for the financial support of the paper and patrons have been most
complimentary. Enthusiasm has increased 100 per cent on the part of the school children in connection
with the continuance of its publications.
In the summer of 1944, the Alumni Association asked to add an Alumni section to the Busy Bee
and in turn it would send each issue to the boys in service both in the States and overseas. The Com-
mercial Club readily agreed that this would give the paper wide circulation and publicity, so this section
was added. Mrs. Guy Farmer was chosen the Alumni Correspondent and was considered a member
of the Busy Bee staff.
In the Fall of 1944 the School Board very graciously offered to furnish such supplies as stencils and
ink towards the publication of the Busy Bee to aid in the support of a project which they felt worth-
while to the students in the Commercial Department. The Alumni Association has also helped greatly
with all expenses incurred, and has sent more than 3,000 copies of the Busy Bee through the mails to Alumni
all over the world.
We feel that our Busy Bee has become a very outstanding personality in King William High School
as well as to its Alumni. We wish to thank those who have been so helpful and who have encouraged
us to go on. We are greatly indebted to our Advisor. Miss Simon, who has been continously working
and training us to make each issue better than the one before. We have learned that working together
for any cause is the only way progress can be made.

Motto__________“Strive and we shall win’’
FOR the past two years the Commercial Club has tried to live up to its motto by striving to do all
in its power for the improvement of the club and the school. At the beginning of the school session
1945-46, the Club sponsored an initiation party for the new members who. upon entrance into the
Commercial Department, were eligible for such membership. This was a great success, and with these
new workers the Commercial Club anticipated a big year ahead.
The Club has continued, as last year, the sale of school supplies of all kinds to the entire school.
This project has proved profitable to the Club as well as helpful to the school children.
Continued publication of the Busy Bee, the School newspaper sponsored by the Commercial Club.
has been of great concern to all the members of the Club, and through the support of local merchants
and the Alumni Association this has been possible. An Alumni news section was added in 1944 to create
the interest of the old graduates in the activities of the school.
King William banners in the school colors, orange and blue, were ordered by the Club and these
have met with popular approval and have sold readily.
Sponsored entertainments have been rather limited this year due to the many other activities of
the school, but the Club did have a Square Dance on February 9, which drew a large crowd and was quite
successful. In the Spring the Club will plan to have a picnic for all its members.
Under the direction of Miss Simon, our sponsor, and Jeanne Alexander, our president, this year
has been a successful one. We are proud of our Club and will continue to strive to make it better and
more progressive.

School Song
Let's give a Rah for K. IV. II. S.,
And let us work with all our might,
Others may like black and crimson,
Rut for us it's Orange and Blue.
Let other colors be forgotten,
Let us the spirit rule,
IVe'll join and give a royal welcome
For the good of our old school!
It's K. IV. II. S.I It's A’. IV. II. S.!
The pride of everyone that's here.
Come on ye old Grads., come on ye young lads,
It's old il. II’. II. S., we cheer! Rah! Rah!
.Now is the time boys, to make a big noise,
.No matter what the people say.
For there is none to fear, the gang's all here,
So, Hail to h'. IV. H. S., Hail!

Alumni Association Activities

r I1 HE Alumni /\ssociation ol King William High School brought its first successful year, 1944. to a
close on January 1, 1945, when an annual banquet was held. This also ushered in the New Year
with many ideas and plans for an even better organization.
To carry out the purpose of our Association towards the continual progress of our school, we pre-
sented an assembly Bible at the graduation exercises in May. The night following graduation, we held
a Home-Coming Dance with the Senior Class as our guest.
During the summer our membership drive got under way, while the Alumni News Section of the
Busy Bee was sent forth monthly to the members, as well as the many alumni in service.
The first event of the ’45-’46 session was a Fall Dance in September for the benefit of the Association.
On October 16, a quarterly meeting was held for all members, at which time the sketch of a seal was
presented and adopted as the official seal of our Association. Alumni pins, bearing this seal, were ordered
by many of the members. Committees were appointed and plans were made for the coming banquet.
The evening of January 1, 1946, found everything in readiness for the many alumni and guests
attending the annual banquet. We were honored to have Mr. Clarence H. Spain as our guest speaker.
During the short business meeting the officers for the coming year were elected. A dance brought the
get-together to a successful climax.
Our Association has many plans and ideas set forth, and through the efforts and loyal support of
each member, we can fulfill these objectives, thereby attaining a stronger organization.

To everything else you have
learned during your school
days, add this . . . that the
cost of ELECTRICITY has al-
ways been downward. While
the cost of most everything
else you use today has been
increased, your ELECTRICITY
is cheaper today than it has
ever been before.
