"Who's that? Oh, no, that can't be me—but it is!"
"How some people have changed! Such comments
were heard in the halls upon distribution of the 45
Hatchet.
The staff worked under great difficulties due to
war shortages, but succeeded in preparing the fol-
lowing pages.
We, the Hatchet staff, present this annual for your
approval.

To those who have so loyally and faithfully given their lives
and sacrificed their hopes, ambitions and desires that we may
continue to live in this free land of ours where we have freedom
of speech, press, religion, and freedom from want so that we
may continue to live the American way of life. Yes, America,
the home of the free and the brave. To the boys who have trod
the halls of Washington, many of our best pals and friends
whom may never return again to enjoy this way of life, we, the
Hatchet staff, humbly dedicate this 1945 Hatchet.
The boys on our honor roll who are serving on the far-flung
battlefields and in our own country are listed on the last two
pages of the Hatchet.
On the plaques in our halls we are reminded each day of
those who have made the supreme sacrifice, some on land and
some on the sea. To the following boys:
DONALD FISHER
EDWARD BAILEY
CLIFFORD WINNER
CHARLES PATTERSON
ROBERT LEWIS
GERALD FARRIS
EUGENE WINNER
CARL MEHELCIC
RAY WHITE
we are greatly indebted.

First and Second Verses
On the plains of dear old Kansas,
Tapestried in green.
Rise the walls of Washington—
Hail to thee our queen!
Far removed from all the tumult.
Challenging the eye.
Stands the school we all love dearly—
Stands our Washington High.
CUOIUS
First and Second Chorus
Hail our high school.
Dear old high school.
May she ever be
Light that guides and guards us always
On Life's dark deep sea.
I
Lift the chorus ever upward.
Mount it to the sky.
Red and White before us proudly:
"Hall to Washington High."

Principal Claude A. Huyck, for the seventh consecutive year, has success-
fully guided us through another school year. To the faculty for their patience
and ceaseless efforts in our behalf we give our humble thanks.
The board members contributed much time and effort to maintain a school
of which we may be proud. Only through their combined efforts were we able
to make this another successful year.

CL AS S UOY
Like a bright meteor from another planet, something shining, sparkhng with vitality, and excitingly
original made a crash landing on the campus of this school September 9, 1941. One hundred and seven
freshmen appeared eager to live and learn. George Bigham was chosen President, Leonard Kelley, Vice
President; Violet Clark, Secretary; Jack Baldschum, Treasurer, and Irene Waldon, Cheerleader.
Again in the fall of 1942 this mighty class stormed into "the halls" under the head sponsorship of
Miss Covell, with newcomer Miss Harris and Mr. Roberts assisting. Ralph O Connor was chosen Presi-
dent of the class, with Darlene Harvey, Vice-President; Bonny Harris, Secretary, Jack Baldschum,
Treasurer, and Norma Hawkins, Cheerleader. The class as a whole claimed its usual place on top in the
bond drive. John Muder and Leroy Edwards held positions on the varsity football team, and John Wil-
son, Leroy Edwards and John Muder were varsity teamsters in basketball. Two Sophomores, Jack Bald-
schum and Norma Hawkins, were elected Cheerleaders by the Pep Club and Student Body, respectively.
Mateel Hayes was a member of the Girls' Sextette; Marvin Harris, Hobart Hull and Jack Baldschum rep-
resented our musical Sophomores in Boys' Octette, and Catherine Snyder and Bonnie Brown sang in
Girls' Octette.
Displaying real determination to make the best better, eighty-five Juniors came in the fall of '43 to
give their all for the good of Washington Rural High. They proved indispensable because eight of them
were on the football team, and four playing varsity basketball. Norma Hawkins and Jack Baldschum
were again placed on their cheerleading posts. Five Juniors, including Marvin Harris, a lead, were in-
cluded in the operetta cast. Bill Vandiver and Paul Barker were on debate team. Mary Lindsay, LaVerna
Deckman and Belva Flauding were the first Juniors to ever be on the Washingtonian staff, Mary as co-
editor, Laverna, feature editor, and Belva, exchange editor. "Almost Summer" was chosen Junior play
by Mrs. Iva Allen Voigt, director. George Bigham, Mary Lindsay, Gene Ayers, Barbara DuBois, Jack Jus-
tice, Lorihe Leavendusky, Jack Rankin, Mary Edith Harms, Paul Barker and Ann Gilman were the cast
members.
In their all-school assembly, they presented a musical fantasy, "A Soldier's Dream," by Mary Lindsay.
Highlight of the year was the prom which followed an aviation theme. Head sponsor, Mr. Roberts,
together with Miss Covell and Miss Harris, ably directed the successful event with the students' help.'
In spite of the "call to colors" threatening some of the boys, seventy-two new Seniors felt their first
thrill of being the big "its" and top of the high school ladder. Carrying their responsibilities through
famously, the class of 1945 let the school and community know things were really humming in the school
because the leaders "knew the score."
Nov/, with a lump in our throats and a light of something accomplished in our eyes, we reflect mem-
ories of those traditional events, ditch day, Senior play, annual publication, Senior breakfast, class night,
Junior-Senior prom, baccalaureate, and now commencement. During the measured steps we reflect how
alorious a year it has been.
George Bigham was again elected President; Keith Kerr, Vice-President; Darlene Harvey Secretary;
Bill Vandiver, Treasurer, and Mary Lou Barner, Cheerleader. Leaders in school included Helen Bechtold’
Girl Reserve and Student Council Presidents; Ralph O'Connor, Hi-Y President; George Bigham Pep
Club President; Darlene Harvey, Red Pepper President; John Muder, W Club President- Jack Rankin and
Mary Lindsay, Glee Club Presidents.

To the "sophisticated sophomores" we owe mtfch co ation—not
only for their brilliancy, but for their unusually different sense of humor. They
have made the halls of Washington a lively place the last year.
Even so, much credit should go to the sophomores for their contributions
to the many activities of the school. The sophomores were especially outstand-
ing in athletics, with Jack Peerson, Clarence Priddy, Charles Duderstadt, Charles
Rogers, Dwane Crawl, B. Harrison, Ben Lafler, Dick Richards and George Jura-
nich participating.
Virginia Cole was elected by the class io serve as an attendant to the Home-
coming Queen.
The sophomores held a skating party at the Jayhawk roller rink, and spon-
sored a Valentine's Day dance.
Doris Jean Carlson served as drum majorette with the band.
The class chose Bill Trapp, Elnora Lindsey, Beverly McKain and Joan Big-
ham as their representatives to Student Council.

The journalism class had a larger enrollment this year, with twenty-one
enrolled. The staff worked under great difficulties getting the paper out on time
with several students spending much extra time after school hours.
After many hours of telephoning and days of selling ads, it was possible
for the second semester staff to present a printed paper to the students of Wash-
ington. The paper was financed entirely by the journalism class with the
money they secured from ads. Due to war shortages, we feel very lucky to
have the opportunity of having our paper printed, and took great pride in pre-
senting The Washingtonian in printed form to you students.
The co-editors for the first semester were Shirley Orr and Paul Barker; the •
second semester co-editors were Florence Miller and Bill Vandiver.

collecting clothing for relief.
Baskets of food furnished and packed by the girls formed the Christmas
project of the organization.
Monthly Cabinet suppers were held this year at the homes of the different
Cabinet members.
Various activities were held during the year. Some of them included:
Heart Sister Weed, Mother-Daughter Tea, Joint Christmas Program with the Hi-Y,

The basketball squad, winning second place in the Eastern Kansas League
and in the Regional Tournament, wound up a smashing season, defeated by
none save Turner.
Additional honors were given io three members of the team when they
were placed on the all-city team from the East Kansas League. John Wilson
shared honor with Herb Siler of Turner for co-captainship, Bill Krstolic was
placed on the first five, and John Muder on the second team.
Plenty of action and excitement plus excellent sportsmanship distinguished
the Washington games this year, and the boys have a lot of credit coming for
some fine teamwork.

The football team enjoyed a very successful season, taking third place in
the eastern Kansas League and demonstrating admirable skill and sportsman-
ship. Beginning practice early in the year, the players displayed much enthusi-
asm and sportsmanship, which probably accounted for their more successful
season.
Six of the eleven varsity teamsters were seniors, namely, Bill Krstolic and
John Muder, co-captains, Ralph O'Connor, Edward Rosche, Fred Smith and
Orville Burkard.
They played the game fairly, win or lose, and with ,Mr. Stewart as then-
able coach, the varsity gridsters deserve our heartiest congratulations for a job
well done.

the Washington team proved their grid supremacy by up-
setting the Braves 31-0. During the half of the game, the

QUEEN
Height of the fall festivities was the Homecoming, No-
vember 10th. The whole school hummed with excitement
amid the secrecy of the election of the queen and the at-
tendants, anticipation of the Washington vs. Bonner foot-
ball game, and a bustling decoration committee preparing
the gym for the following dance.
Pep Clubs and Band gave an excellent program of music
and drilling, and Darlene Harvey carried very graciously
the honors of queen, with Bill Krstolic, co-captain, honor-
ary king.
Bonny Harris was elected Pep Club attendant, with Mary
Lindsay, Senior class attendant; Jo Ann Blair, by the Junior
class; Virginia Cole, Sophomore attendant, and the Fresh-
men chose Martha Ayers. Gene Ayers and Marvin Harris
were elected escorts by the Girls' Pep Club. Coral Davis
was the ring bearer.
This was followed by a dance in the gym.

Winning one out of five games, the "Wildkittens," under the captaincy of Bill Hill, played
some hard games during the season. Even though only one game was won, the team did some
clean playing and showed good sportsmanship. They promise some good material for next
year's squad.

Jim Maxfield was chosen captain of the Freshman Basketball Team this year. Although
the team was unsuccessful in winning any games, there were several very close games. The
Wildkittens accepted the invitation to Leavenworth for a Freshman Tournament, but failed to
place. The boys did some good, hard playing this year, and promise to be good material for
next year. 53
